Your Own Best Disciple

In United and True, last week… I shared… “Unity. It is not just about community, local and global. It is about Unity within. Alignment. Mind, body, spirit, Soul. Loving ourselves and others are not competing forces, nor is it about one before the other. When we care for others, we are often honoring and caring for our own selves. It is reciprocal, so long as their is balance.”

This week, on LinkedIn, I posted YOUR own new world order… inspired by a great article from RBC. I humbly and sincerely suggest the read and reflect. Indeed and in deed. Both aforementioned posts speak to aligning ourselves and our worlds. Finding our best purpose and service is about that. Alignment matters. It is not about drive but flow.

On After School Live this week, I shared on Discipline as a reward versus a punishment. Discipline is that strength of character that protects us from distraction and doubt. It keeps us real, and true.

We make our best choices with it. We persevere and “get ‘er done”. We cultivate out best character; as it Sharpens the Blades… on it. We practice to make permanent. When we feel less than motivated, it is that “friend” that grabs us by the hand and gets us doing what we need to do… whether in stillness or movement.

Discipline is the work of the disciple.

It practices, hard.

Resolute and faithful.

Consider your Soul your master. Listen to it. Follow it. Be your own best disciple. Call upon Discipline.

I am. It means being courageously honest about the person I am and intend to be. It means having that as my chase. It means getting palpably, pungently clear and what and who matters most to me and hold that up as my soulful master; and practicing the Discipline to follow it.

Last evening on LinkedIn, I shared

“Almost two months ago… you walked on little one. I keep walking and will someday catch up. For now, and as long as it takes, I will keep walking. What we can best do to #Love and #Honor those we Love and Honor is to walk in such a way that we do Love and Honor. #bestlittledogintheworld

Panda sampled for me so much of what I strive to be. She was and is my #sliceof God… with her Gentleness, Courage, Integrity, Zeal, Purposefulness, Love and so very much more. She was not unlike a mirror to see a better me. She was and is a blessing and gift.

Now this disciple must walk.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

United and True

Last week, I shared on Cultivating Cultures of Care… and I finished with “Building cultures that care and taking care of ourselves are not divergent themes. We set the example, and build the culture in doing so.”

I suggest the read. That said, why?

Unity. It is not just about community, local and global. It is about Unity within. Alignment. Mind, body, spirit, Soul. Loving ourselves and others are not competing forces, nor is it about one before the other. When we care for others, we are often honoring and caring for our own selves. It is reciprocal, so long as their is balance.

Today, I shared on Certitude and owning it. In it, I also shared a video around same. When we own our lives and who we are, we are caring for ourselves, and others. Our Truthfulness helps those looking for us find us and those not… the opportunity to go on in their lives.

Panda understood this. Be true to yourself and others. Own who you are. Be you, authentically bringing your best self to the world. In so doing, we best serve the world.

Love and miss you Pan.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Cultivating Cultures of Care

Character cultivates caring. In my last blog here, I noted… “As a Master Facilitator with The Virtues Project, I am aware that (a) character matters and most so in times of uncertainty, (b) character is driven and developed by the practice of virtues and (c) such practice is made possible by reflecting on what each virtue looks like in action. As I face each step of the walk forward, it is crucial to assess the situation, identify the virtues called for, imagine what they would look like, and then act accordingly.

  • Assess the situation with Openness and Discernment
  • Identify the virtues called upon with Discernment and Decisiveness
  • Imagine the virtues in action with Creativity
  • Act upon that imagination with Initiative and Commitment

This morning I was inspired by a remarkable student presentation that reminded me powerfully of (a) the importance of building cultures of community driven by character and (b) the equal importance for us to individually take true care of ourselves. After the session this morning, I found myself assessing my situation, identifying virtues needing practice, imagining their application, and acting upon it. In a subsequent class/course with those same students, I made the assignment to be an hour of self care. Their ticket out would be that they take the hour and find a way to reduce their stress. I said I would be willing to stay around if that was what helped… but I gave them all the option. They identified their plans for that self care and went off, thankful. I too made my declaration.

Building cultures that care and taking care of ourselves are not divergent themes. We set the example, and build the culture in doing so.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

AIIA

We cannot be certain of much but there are things for which we can.

In Tenacious Sagacious Steps, I suggested that “Tenacity is that capacity to keep walking, and Sagacity is that capacity for discerning each step that is right for us.” I recommend the back back, read and reflect.

That said, me too.

I am also discerning thusly.

This has been a demanding week between my walking the Baha’i Fast while getting back to online teaching and various development projects, plus my new road back to health. One mini project amongst it all was to update Rock 109 to Rock 118… a new periodic table of virtues for practice.

Why do I offer such here? As I consider Tenacity and Sagacity, the “raw materials” are the practice of the virtues. The challenge is to look at each situation faced, as faced, and consider what virtues are necessary for each; not unlike a 118 speed stick shift.

As a Master Facilitator with The Virtues Project, I am aware that (a) character matters and most so in times of uncertainty, (b) character is driven and developed by the practice of virtues and (c) such practice is made possible by reflecting on what each virtue looks like in action. AIIA… 4 steps for those tenacious sagacious steps. We walk…

Tenacious Sagacious Steps

First, this week, I invite you to check out Purposeful and Kind. In it, I posed the thought that “Purposefulness is a Virtue; a strength of character. It brings meaning to life. It gives it true value… and we get to define it, as parents, kindred, friends, colleagues and more. We get to define it as educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders. We get to also help others define their own by living ours. And we can look to the dreams of our childhood for signs and signals. I am looking back and forward. Clarity abounds, and more to follow. But, clarity is there.”

With the Baha’i Fast upon me and now into Day 3, clarity continues. And, as the video indicates I am diving into Sagacity. This morning, I posted on Facebook and LinkedIn…

“For me, today is a day of #struggle and #Sagacity … that capacity to discern a deeper insight. At 9:43 pm this evening, it will be one month since #bestlittledogintheworld Panda passed. She was not “like” family. She was family. She was not part of my family. With no parents nor children, she was my whole and own family. I saw and see her not as pet, but as Little Wolf to my Big Wolf. We walked life together for 13+ years. Why do I offer this? Enter Sagacity. Enter this TED talk on #grief … maybe when those of us who say we cannot seem to move on, we are really saying we do not intend to move on without honoring who we love. Grief is proportional to genuine Love. Genuine #Love is proportional to #Honor and Strength. Grieving does not imply the inability to move forward. It implies we will move forward being so moved by those we Love. It is #Courage in action.”

And I posted this TED talk by Nora McInerny on grief and moving forward.

My point? Of late, I have been purposefully reflecting back … and imagining forward … on path. I have been exploring Tenacity, and now Sagacity, as virtue; strength of character. Tenacity is that fierce and flexible Determination to “get there”, wherever we imagine “there” to be. Sagacity can be our capacity to deliberately discern our way there. Together, they forge a kind of Resilience that is best for us. We get to determine our way. We may have no idea what the future holds, but we can discern and determine our countenance and gate walking forward to it.

For me, I know what I will be working on with respect to living and walking my best life, with Integrity. I have discerned and decided with the happening of my recent 61st birthday.

That said, enter Tenacity and Sagacity for the walking forward. Tenacity is that capacity to keep walking, and Sagacity is that capacity for discerning each step that is right for us. As Richard Bolles once premised, our mission and purpose is not some fixed state that one day we discover not unlike a mountaintop where we can see everything. Mission and purpose are slowly unfurled. And it requires self awareness. When we have a true sense of what is important to us and we are aware of our strengths and capacities, we explore mission and purpose by bringing our best to life each day… to that which is most important… and see where that takes us. Then, moving forward is one tenacious sagacious step at a time. With that in mind and heart, this morning I took the opportunity to assess my passion, purpose and propensity for exploring character. I finalized my new ROCK 109 poster, identifying 109 virtues we work with and on at Epic Engage.

Over this College Break this week, and The Fast I am now in and amidst, I will be reviewing and finalizing design of my new website, and better identifying and articulating on my work as a College educator and with Epic Engage. I will be diving ever deeper on inventorying what matters most to me and what, with 61 years of life invested, I best bring to the table personally and professionally. I will forge an ever greater clarity around base camp (this crossroads in my life, this intersection) for me, all the better knowing that:

  • there is indeed a mountain to climb (the rest of my life)
  • I do not know what it holds ahead
  • but I can know what I will bring to the party and path… including the twin capacities of Tenacity and Sagacity.

My thoughts to you are:

  • Get What Color is Your Parachute? by Dick Bolles (I have no vested interest, but I wholly believe in the content and have for some 39 years now… I have multiple copies over those 39 years)… and you can find it here on Amazon too..
  • Work through the book.
  • Get clear on your own inventory. Be that self aware of what you bring to your own life path and party.
  • Then, accept that you do not know the future, but you can know what you bring to it…
  • And, practice Tenacity and Sagacity moving forward.

This past week I wrote on 4 Months to Live and, these past few weeks on Tenacity, Wisdom, the Brain and more… and I recommend the reads. That said, consider your base camp (individually and/or organizationally) and the mystery that is the future. Our way forward is about knowing where we are, what is most important to us, what we bring to the proverbial table, and how we engage Tenacity and Sagacity on the path forward. Panda instinctively and implicitly checked all the boxes. I will Honor her by rising to her example.

I hope to see you on the path.

Peace, passion and prosperity…
