The MOST Noteworthy

These past few months, I have been reading the work of Joe Calloway. Joe is a performance coach and advisor who helps great companies get even better. He is indeed, and in deed. I am impressed with what Joe is doing and how he does it. Most notably, for me, I have found incredible value in his latest book, Be the Best at What Matters Most. I strongly recommend the read. A core piece around which Joe challenges the readers is the choosing of what actually matters most. The challenge, for me, was the articulation of specifics.

Approach to quality.

Am I most concerned with and juiced by the beauty of continuous improvement? Is excellence my primary driver? Where does consistency of effort and result place in my priorities? Is excellence, for me, defined by comparison with competition or a journey of constant perfecting? What matters most to me in terms of the question of quality?

Approach to contribution.

What drives me most about contribution? Is it the ability to serve? Is it all about making a difference? Is my core motivation focused on building legacy? Who do I most want to serve? Who do I best serve? How do I best serve them? How important is that? What is the contribution that matters most to me? What kind of legacy drives me? How do I most desire to make a difference? What are my priorities in terms of contribution?

Approach to joy.

What is most important to me in terms of making this work enjoyable? Is it all about creating? Innovating? Developing? Is fun a core piece for my work? What about fulfillment? How does that play a role? Where does excitement and adventure fall in terms of my priorities? What is most important to me with respect to enjoying the work?

Approach to the numbers.

That being considered, what is most important regarding the size of success? Is growth my core driver? Is it being #1? Is it ultimately about profit? Or sales? Is the number of clients core to success for me? Is the size of the clients I have my core motivation? How about the loyalty of clients? How important is that for me? What are the most important numbers for me?

Joe’s work challenges me to consider powerful questions and many more of my own. He will constructively challenge you. It is about getting abundantly clear on what matters most to you in the work. For me, I found myself including 12 factors… prioritized as vital, desired, and resultant. I found myself identifying 4 vital factors, 4 desired factors and 4 factors that are important but are results of the first 4×4. I like where it took me on clarity.

There is so much more to the book and I strongly suggest you have a read. There is so much more to Joe’s work, and I suggest you check it out. It is in line with my own belief and work in building united, diverse and high performance organizations. Check Joe out at You will be glad you did.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Rockin’ the Message

Happy Canada Day to all my friends throughout this cool nation, and to my friends in the USA… in advance, enjoy Independence Day!

It has been a while. I have been off the blog radar, but with good reason. Much has happened in the way of reflection and review; and increased clarity of passion, purpose and consistent practice. I have been reading and observing and applying, with special thanks to so many great conversations, colleagues and friends… and to the work of Joe Calloway ( in inspiring the sharpening of my vision and application, moving forward. With all that has been a swirling, I thought it appropriate to introduce myself.

My name is Barry Lewis Green. I am The Unity Guy™. I lead EPIC Engagement and Consulting. I contend that cultures which are both diverse and united lead to high performance. In being, believing and doing so, I speak with several different but unified voices. I think we all do. We each have multiple facets and aspects that are authentic and, if we have done our own homework, connected and united. So, here are my voices, going forward, united and purposeful; as The Unity Guy™. If I were to use the metaphor of choosing a clear road or route for my work, these voices form my 6 lane Autobahn; high speed and headed in a singular and clear direction.

I am a Globalist. I speak to the big picture, locally and globally. That picture is not simple “pie in the sky”. It is about building a bigger pie. Prosperity advances when we understand this. A bigger vision moves us beyond band aids and reactionary tendencies. I speak to this and will continue to do so, even more so.

I am a Mission Specialist. I believe in mission. I have been a student and practitioner of the power of mission for over 30 years. I believe we all have one or should. The business of sports gets the vital importance of clarity of mission. Mission gives meaning, collectively and individually. It is about fitting, without forcibly fitting in. Yes, I speak to that and will continue to do so… and even more so.

I am a Freedom Fighter. I believe in independence of thought and interdependence of work and life. Unity is not found in uniformity or conformity. It is found in diversity, working together. Clear, strong and independent voices working together are formidable. You got it. I speak to that and will continue to do so, and even more so.

I am a Business Educator. I teach business. I have done so for almost 20 years. In particular, I teach strategic management, human resource management and entrepreneurship. I contend that business, at core, is noble. It is about making a living while serving. When done so, success is sustaining and sustainable. I speak to that and will continue to do so, with even greater passion.

I am a Communicreator™. I believe music and the arts are incredible vehicles for courage, connection and community. My personal passions for music, dance, cartooning and more are my chosen instruments… and I will continue to work them to bring people and purposes together. Entertainment is not something to be shrugged off as unimportant. We are engaged best in learning and living when we enjoy the process. And yes, I speak to that and will continue to do so, having fun doing it.

And, I am a Character. I am a Master Facilitator for The Virtues Project™, a global movement for character as the source of great individual and collective leadership. I am deeply passionate about the vital importance of character, both unique and universal, in advancing epic success. This material and its strategies for engagement are core to that success, and I speak to that and will continue to do so; and yes, massively even more so.

So, in my work and play and life, there you have it. It is my own synergy of purpose and passion. I suggest that diversity exists within us as well as around us. We have different voices. The danger only lies when they are discordant or not recognized. Mine are like a Special Forces team, driven, in my case, by a deep belief that unity, diversity and prosperity are incredibly and inherently interconnected. As the Globalist, Mission Specialist, Freedom Fighter, Business Educator, Communicreator™, and Character, I will not only increasingly speak to issues around unity, diversity and prosperity but important paths and choices needed to get there.

In future, and now with daily and weekly blogging, you will read and see and hear these voices. They are but different angles on a common direction. Know that they will always be committed to adding value to thought and action… and that they are unified under one purpose; to explore the power of unity and diversity in building prosperity. If it has to do with:

• seeing the big picture
• leading with mission, character and capacity
• aligning purpose and consistent practice
• fostering powerful enterprise
• working together in powerful unity
• leveraging diversity as a strength
• engaging entertainment and education

… The Unity Guy™, through EPIC, will be sharing thoughts and ideas. That is The Unity Guy™. THAT, is the diverse and unified message I will be rockin’. It is the 6 lane highway to the work I must do… you know the one. It is the one that helps build diverse, united cultures of high performance.

I invite you to join me on the journey.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Your Goal, Role and Mole

The process of going from being a “speaker” to “building an expertise and passion” is a journey of substance. My biggest learning to date is that, in order to create genuine and powerful focus for your business, in the private, public and community sectors, or in your personal life… you have to know your business.

For me, that implies three vital elements.

Know your goal. This is your “protectorate”, your Gotham, if you will. It is your vision and overarching mission. Who do you want to serve and how will you serve them? For me, that is EPIC, a vision of peace, passion and prosperity, locally and globally… throughout companies, campuses, communities and countries… based on work around character and culture. That is my protectorate. That is my vision, mission and goal; to be an EPIC champion of peace, passion and prosperity throughout the world. It is my big picture.

Know your role. This is your “identity”, your brand and reputation. I call this your Batman. In striving for your goal, who are you? What is your identity? How do you want to be known? For me, I am The Unity GuyTM. That is my identity.

Know your mole. This is the daily worker… the digger; your trusted assistant and sidekick. This is your Robin. This is about who will do the daily work of building identity, mission and vision; and it is a side of us. For me, it is my online presence, moving forward henceforth as the business educator side of me. Through online message and strategy, the business educator within, will, in daily ways, introduce ideas around peace, passion and prosperity at work, school, play and community. The message will be practical, and daily. That is my action.

And so it begins. My mission is EPIC, my identity is The Unity GuyTM and my daily work is as that friendly neighbourhood business educator.

How about you?

Peace,passion and prosperity.

An EPIC Community?

As we prepare for GSS 2013 in Vancouver, we offer a starting point for discussion and determination around epic engagement and community building at work, school and beyond. We offer some thoughts on the concept of community. says it is “a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage”. says it is a “Self-organized network of people with common agenda, cause, or interest, who collaborate by sharing ideas, information, and other resources”.

The Universal House of Justice defines it as “… a composition of diverse, interacting participants that are achieving unity in an unremitting quest for spiritual and social progress.”

We might suggest there is an EPIC definition of community which we offer into the mix.

Community is the sum total of voices, wisdom and talent, both diverse and same, which can be harnessed in powerful unity to achieve uncommon results.

With this definition, we suggest communities are deeper than teams. They have longer roots and stronger cultures. They are broad and deep. They are best built on both collective and character leadership, understanding and maximizing all levels of capacity within the community in question. Communities exist at work, in school and in what we consider traditional communities. That being said, it is not merely a collection of people. It is organic, dynamic and of spirit.

This is the community of which we speak and address in engaging and building, advancing together in thought, will and action.

Let’s build community that is both diverse and united, engaged and empowered. The result is incredible prosperity on a myriad of levels.

Stay tuned for news from Vancouver!

The EPIC First Blog Post!

EPICempowering participation in communities… advance together in thought, will and action.

We are excited about the launch of EPIC Engagement and Consulting. We are excited because EPIC is not simply a business model or revenue stream. It is our passion and purpose, our joy and service. That is EPIC; it is who we are, and it is what we do.

Our combined expertise was born of hard earned experience in collective leadership and communications… and character, culture and capacity building. We come from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. We come from the worlds of education, management and leadership; and we understand their combined roles in building great communities at work, school and beyond.

We contend that in times of both trial and triumph, we are tested in terms of how well we work together… how well we engage one another. The forces of both crisis and comfort have their respective dangers. How do we respond to both the spirit of challenge and complacency as organizations… as companies, campuses and larger communities looking to get and stay strong, happy and prosperous?

As we launch EPIC, we are headed to Vancouver, British Columbia for the Global Speaker Summit running December 8-10, 2013. Engaging with change agents the world over, we are excited about the collective wisdom coming together and the amazing connections for service. We will be fully engaging the conference as participants, volunteers, workshop hosts and musicians! We will be sharing the experience in real time, via social media, blogging and video. The timing for EPIC is perfect and we look forward to the synergy and the energy that arises from it.

Bottom line, we are excited and hope you are too. Engage us; we will engage you!
