The Pit Stop of Patience

On New Year’s Eve, I wrote this on And So It is New Year 2019. It concerned itself with vision and goals, purpose, meaning, character and more… and I truly and humbly do suggest the read.

Last night and today, January 1-2 in the Northeast Avalon including St. John’s and Mount Pearl, we were met with this storm.  At first it promised to be a blizzard, but it turned and is turning out to be two storms in one.  I even liken it to a bit of a snowy hurricane; high winds and snow, lightening up with rain and freezing rain for a bit, then returning to snow and very high winds.  It has grounded the city, at the very beginning of the new year.  For a snapshot look, notice the shovel handle in the far right of the photo, just outside the door.

Yup, walloped a bit hard, and amidst all the plans for the new year.  Social media has been filled with messages for a great new year, and I am sure many had plans to hit the ground running, myself included.  For me, the intent was and is to launch the new EPIC Speakernet…. 26 expert speakers coming together to be available for conferences and events in Newfoundland and Labrador… effective and officially today.  The thought was and is to launch the introduction of #hUmaNITY and Project BLACKWING™… this week.  The thought was and is to launch our now 19 free services… including DELIVER™, CAPS Cares, and Speakeasies™.  And yes, our updated site.  Yes, there were great intentions, and I guess, by noting them here, I have kind of introduced and/or launched each.  Still, I am reminded that journeys require patience.  Even just two days in can test the journey.  We are eager to get at it.  Then, right at the beginning, a wheel can fall off.

Patience is not about biting our tongues or holding our breaths.  Patience is the power (or at least one of the core powers) of the hunt, and the journey.  The hunt is not simply about the chase, but the wait.

And that can be weighty for many of us.  I know that it can be for me. But then and tonight, I think…

Consider Patience

The Virtues Reflection Card says it is hopeful and expectant, un-rushed and gentle with mistakes.  It says it accepts where we are, with an essential confidence that that is not where we will stay.  Patience does not panic or become disturbed or doubtful.  It breathes well. It trusts that we will make it.  It is the tortoise over the hare.  It has a quiet confidence, and sense of certitude.  It know it will get there.

As my back is “gone” and the snow keeps coming, I need to understand this.  As we each reach for that which we most soulfully desire this year, in whatever areas and arenas of our lives, we need to remember that Rome took more than a day.  Our souls know that.  Our egos struggle with it.  Listen to your soul.  Our lives are journeys.  Our years are segments.  Our days are miles.  Some miles are pit stops and we (I) must remember that the pit stops are necessary.  Indeed, I believe it was the remarkable Stephen Covey who once referenced that sometimes we are too busy to stop for gas, and we must stop for gas.

So, as you venture forth in 2019, enjoy the ride, be alert to the times for both movement and stillness.  If it helps, I offer up this prayer I say in remembrance of my sister.

  • Make me ready, in all circumstances, O my Lord, to serve Thee and to set myself towards the adored sanctuary of Thy Revelation and of Thy Beauty. If it be Thy pleasure, make me to grow as a tender herb in the meadows of Thy grace, that the gentle winds of Thy will may stir me up and bend me into conformity with Thy pleasure, in such wise that my movement and my stillness may be wholly directed by Thee.

Among other things, it speaks to me of the necessity of movement and stillness.  It is not all up to me.  I am simply to be ready.  This storm is out of my control, as is much in life.  What is within my grasp is the ability to be ready.  In education, leadership, business community building and more… certainly, in life … in 2019, I wish that you live your life ready and to be alert to the things that come your way.

Listen and live.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

2019, Here We Come

A WISH

Today, I found myself at the top of Signal Hill taking in the view of St. John’s and Mount Pearl and Cape Spear and the North Atlanticand the sight of Cabot Tower itself.  That Tower is and has been such a vantage point for so very long.  There I was … me, my music, and the wondrous view… and my thoughts.  One of those thoughts was a sincere wish.

I wish you Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, however you might celebrate this time of year.  Whether Christmas or Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or Festivus, Winter Solstice or… you get the picture; I hope you truly find joy in it, for you and those you love.

THOUGHT TOO: Reflection

And there were other thoughts. Just before Christmas, I wrote on my Pre-Flight Check.  It was and is the culmination (thus far) of a journey towards what I am calling my 20022020 Vision.  That vision, set out several months back and focusing on celebrating my 60th birthday, remains:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love.  My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all.  I am teaching business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and doing my global work of Epic Engage™. I am loving it!  I am 110K in weight (slim for my body structure) and benching same; healthy and strong. And, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.

On November 15, I set out what I called and call my 90 Day Snapshots in GREAT Goals and The Hunt;  90 day plans that serve to build towards that vision. During these past few days, I have reflected on my progress with those snapshots.  Here is what I have found.

  • GOOD.  I am walking as a daily student of the practice of character, unity and spirit… having completed my Ruhi Studies Book 1 and prepared my study library on character and unity. I have secured learning resources for conversational Mandarin and French.  I have completed my latest MUN course with a grade of 92 (a 90 average over three courses thus far).  I have been singing, writing and living daily, with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda… and finding new and challenging songs to expand my repertoire, if you will.
  • GOOD. Over this week, I am re-launching the new Epic Engage™ in January, with Project Black Wing™ for launch January 1, 2019, DELIVER™ sessions and Thinking CAPS™ national chats planned… and NLAWS™ and Speakernet officially launching January 1, 2019.
  • GOOD. Thus far this past Fall, I have also developed strong connections with the business development community, including MBO, Futurpreneur, and NLOWE… and have successfully completed the Fall term, teaching business leadership at college.
  • GOOD. AND, I am this week completing my 20022020 W.E.A.L.T.H.™ Plan.

And then…

  • GOOD kind of, in learning. Finally, we made the strategic decision to cease momondays St. John’s under our leadership and focus our best energies on other projects in 2019.

THE NOT SO GOOD, but GETTING BETTER.  All in all, it has been a productive first swing and Fall, and I am pleased with the effect of having a 90-Day Snapshot with which to work.  The one gaping misfire is on “I have a 38 inch waist, eating “more than right”, walking daily” and that is being resolutely addressed with a new and vigorous plan for 2019.  Strategic thinking requires that.

LEARNINGS

All of that is to say that this time, during this week, has already served to be a great check in as I prepare for 2019. What I have re-learned is that:

  • a powerful, personal, relevant and resonant vision is the basis for great motivation and commitment.  Any moving vision must have real meaning … for ourselves.  Anything less is a waste of time and talent.
  • 90 day snapshot visions help make the long term vision less daunting.  Think of them as clear and manageable building blocks or grocery lists where you can focus on getting them achieved or completed… knowing that, by doing so, you are moving towards your bigger vision.  I think Matthew McConaughey speaks to such here.
  • execution is everything.  “Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.”

And so, I am opting to reset with revised snapshots running from January 1 2019 through to February 20 2020… some 416 days.  I offer these now for myself and in the spirit of accountability… and for you in seeing examples of what such snapshots can possibly look like; simple or otherwise.

Then, and below, I offer some thoughts for the New Year.

February 20, 2020… CELEBRATE!

That day will be a celebration; a genuine and powerful and joyful one.  Fully realizing living the life I soulfully believe that I am called and drawn to is a gift… and one that is earned.  With that in mind…

CLOSING THOUGHTS

As 2019 approaches for us all, I am not one to believe that life is meant to be magically “abundant”.  It is meant to be filled with up’s and down’s, in’s and out’s, yin’s and yang’s.  It is meant to be lived.  But, it is best lived intentionally.  We cannot control the waves but we can ride them and sail them.  We cannot control those ducks but we can lead them.  It requires that we get clear on where our soul knows we need to be… whether at work, school, business, community or life.  That requires truthfulness and courage … to even ask, admit and accept.

It requires us to know that work is involved and demanded.  It requires us to understand the vital importance of character.  It demands that we find people who believe in us.  It demands we do it in a world that might not yet believe in us.

Nine words have come through reflective and prayerful meditation this year, for me.  “Everything requires everything. To be ready, do the work.”  I believe that I am getting ever closer to fully understanding their meaning.

That is my journey for 2019.  How about you?

2019, here we come.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Pre-Flight Check

Back on October 10th, I posted this on An Invitation to Bucket. In it, I suggested that I would focus on 5 “buckets” going forward:

  • Educational, which will include my MBa, Mandarin, French and even spiritual
  • Joyful… which will include emotional, and inspirational
  • Work and Service… including vocational, and social
  • Physical… my health
  • WEALTH… including material and financial

First, I suggest you might find it of value to read that post.  The notion of buckets is particularly of value to me.  From that, I developed my “five buckets statement” to be filled by 20022020 (my 60th birthday)… an application of Ikigai for me personally:

It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.

Since then (and if you want to follow the journey), I have written on:

The learnings and evolution continued on this sense of vision.  Then, it heated up with this on GREAT Goal and the Hunt… whereupon I set my 90 Day Snapshots as building blocks for my vision.  I do suggest a good read of that post.

Since then, I documented and developed on:

,,, further “sharpening the blades” on this path of commitment.  To date, it has culminated in last week’s post on THE EPIC ENGAGE … wherein I asked “Who are you? Who do you want to be?”

So What?

All of this is to offer up a path upon which to reflect in possibly reading these posts, and to say that this morning I see them as a boarding of the plane, if you will.  You see, yesterday was a day that started with intense challenge and yet a focus on getting up and at it.  Through it all, I called upon Courage and Certitude, a deep sense of Faith and Trust in what I know… of me and my Commitment to my vision.  I was not going small.  By day’s end, much had changed… had been accomplished, and even re-evaluated.  The getting at it had gotten me to it.  It had revealed nuanced but important realizations.  Yesterday was my pre-flight check, having spent the last few weeks boarding the plane.

What did it reveal?  Well for SNAPSHOT 1: November 15, 2018 through February 12, 2019… 90 days…. it revealed success and otherwise.

  • I am walking as a daily student of the practice of character, unity and spirit
  • I am learning the first basics of conversational Mandarin and French
  • I am continuing my education studies, completing my current course
  • I am prayerfully engaged in my Ruhi studies, Books 1 through 7
  • I am singing, writing and living daily, with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda
  • I have re-launched the new Epic Engage™ in January, with:
    • Project Black Wing™ for launch January 1, 2019
    • DELIVER™ sessions November 2018 and January 2019
    • Thinking CAPS™ national chats December 2018, and January and February 2019
    • NLAWS™ and Speakernet officially launched January 1, 2019
    • new blog-comic strip called Aukwords™ launched in January 2019
    • momondays St. John`s December 10, 2018
    • Speakeasies™ starting in January 2019
  • I am sharing epic stories, via video and momondays
  • I have strong connections with the business development community, including:
    • MBO
    • Futurpreneur, and
    • NLOWE
  • I have successfully completed the Fall term, teaching business leadership at college
  •  have completed and constructed my 20022020 462-day W.E.A.L.T.H.™ Plan.

I am successfully on track and even ahead on most of these items (the blue).  There is but one that is currently “woeful”.

  • I have a 38 inch waist, eating “more than right”, walking daily

Actually, it is more “whoa-full”.  I had to go whoa and realize that something was not quite right.  The  systems check has found an issue.  Yet, that has changed in the last two weeks too.  With the pre-diabetes warning of my doctor (a new piece of news as past tests have never show such a sign) and the promise that it can be thwarted in its advance… I am now eating so much better; so very much better.  I am not on track with the snapshot goal, but I have found the track.  Success!

THE BOTTOM LINE

I offer all of this to say that my pre-flight check and its revelations have demonstrated and reinforced to me that:

  1. having a clear and palpable vision is powerful
  2. having snapshot goals as building blocks towards that vision are equally so
  3. systems checks on the validity of both are vital… and are more productive than shaming.

As you get clear on your vision for 2019 (and I hope and suggest that you do), and identify your snapshot building block goals in getting there… please approach them and evaluate them not as pass or fail, but as learnings to help ready for flight.  See the “glitches” as gifts.  See them as teachers.  For me, there have been real successes with the practice of character, unity and spirit, Mandarin and French, education studies, Ruhi studies, and singing, writing and living daily with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda.  In addition and over this Christmas Break that I have just started, it will see me finalizing on the new Epic Engage™ in January, and constructing my 20022020  W.E.A.L.T.H.™ Plan.  These are successes for me.  But so is my learning on health.  There is no shame in learning, only strength.  For me, what I have learned on that front is that I needed to get deeper on my sense of commitment.  The pre-diabetes warning was just that.  It has galvanized me, not shamed me.  As an educator, I understand that tests are not meant to fail us but to teach us what we know and need to get better knowing.  I am learning.

I wish you a year of vision, goals, learning and growing.  I will share more in a few days.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Day 44: Dealing with Ducks

This is Day 44 of my 500-Day Journey to 20022020.  For some reason, 44 is a number that has relevance for me.  I do not know why, nor do I question.  I trust.

With that in mind, and my post of last week on GREAT Goals and the HUNT… this past week has been a challenge with work load and more.  So many ducks!  In walking my life this week, I have been reminded that Optimism and positive thinking are two different things for me.  Positive thinking tends to stress eliminating the negative.  Optimism sees the negative for what it is; something to meet head on and move forward through or around.  Optimism believes that there is good and bad … and that the bad is good; because it tests and even directs us.

Consider this story from Baha’u’llah:

  • There was once a lover who had sighed for long years in separation from his beloved, and wasted in the fire of remoteness. From the rule of love, his heart was empty of patience, and his body weary of his spirit; he reckoned life without her as a mockery, and time consumed him away. How many a day he found no rest in longing for her; how many a night the pain of her kept him from sleep; his body was worn to a sigh, his heart’s wound had turned him to a cry of sorrow. He had given a thousand lives for one taste of the cup of her presence, but it availed him not. The doctors knew no cure for him, and companions avoided his company; yea, physicians have no medicine for one sick of love, unless the favor of the beloved one deliver him.  At last, the tree of his longing yielded the fruit of despair, and the fire of his hope fell to ashes. Then one night he could live no more, and he went out of his house and made for the marketplace. On a sudden, a watchman followed after him. He broke into a run, with the watchman following; then other watchmen came together, and barred every passage to the weary one. And the wretched one cried from his heart, and ran here and there, and moaned to himself: “Surely this watchman is Izrá’íl, my angel of death, following so fast upon me; or he is a tyrant of men, seeking to harm me.” His feet carried him on, the one bleeding with the arrow of love, and his heart lamented. Then he came to a garden wall, and with untold pain he scaled it, for it proved very high; and forgetting his life, he threw himself down to the garden.  And there he beheld his beloved with a lamp in her hand, searching for a ring she had lost. When the heart-surrendered lover looked on his ravishing love, he drew a great breath and raised up his hands in prayer, crying: “O God! Give Thou glory to the watchman, and riches and long life. For the watchman was Gabriel, guiding this poor one; or he was Isráfíl, bringing life to this wretched one!”

Your beloved heartfelt vision or dream, the true one, deep inside… the one you are consciously or even unconsciously greatly seeking; there are watchmen along the way.  They take the form of obstacles, resistance (as Steven Pressfield puts it), distractions, doubts, confusion and more.  We all have them.  Healthy living and studying and working as an educator, entrepreneur, leader at school, work, business, community and life requires us to face the watchmen; indeed, the ducks.  Famous stories of JK Rowling and many others attest to this.

With all of that in mind and countless examples of my own challenges thus far in life (which I will not recount here), this past week, I have considered my own expectations for what I am calling SNAPSHOT 1: November 15, 2018 through February 12, 2019… 90 days.

  • I have a 38 inch waist, eating “more than right”, walking daily
  • I have completed and constructed my 20022020 462-day W.E.A.L.T.H.™ Plan.

… having worked on and/or completed those highlighted in blue.  Despite the challenges this past week, I have met them with Optimism.  I am feeling accomplished, knowing there is more to be done.  The 90-Day Snapshot is a brick, with ingredients.  Each 90-Day brick builds the 20022020 vision, and each brick’s ingredients (the snapshot) creates the brick.

For me, this is most useful.  I will continue to focus on this brick, the brick of now.  It is how I conduct my business and leadership coaching in working with others; and it works for me.  It works.  One brick at a time is how things get built.  Concerning yourself with a thousand ideas at once is scattered; and counter productive.  Having the end in mind, allows one to strategically focus on what is important… and that is most important.

Know your vision. Mine is:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and more of what and who I love.

Boiled down to:

  • It is 20022020, and I am The Unity Guy™; student and educator around leadership grounded in character, unity, and spirit… delivering in English, Mandarin and French.   I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love.  I am healthy and strong, and wealthy enough to do the work I choose; living as a happy and joyful man.

Then read GREAT Goals and the HUNT, again.  Then design your building and understand your 90-Day bricks.  Focus on them one at a time.  You will get there.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

GREAT Goals and the HUNT

Last week, I shared in Homes Stretch, 3 Steps that, among other things, I am reminded there are three simple but hard steps working towards our own something cool … first, have the big picture clearly in mind and heart… second, establish mini 90-day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and, third, execute.  The hard part is to take the time in getting clear… and in the doing it.  Yes, clarity and commitment to follow through are simple and hard.  And, crucial.  This week, after an eventful, soul searching and eye opening week, I offer the following.

THE BIG PICTURE STAYS TRUE

If anything, this week confirmed for me that my big picture vision stands.  It is important to be clear… and clarity requires diligence in the reflection on same.  Clarity requires digging and questioning and observing and listening.  This week, I had numerous moments to do so and get sure.  My vision remains, and stronger for the reflection this week.

That being said, this week also suggested that I might boil it down to:

  • It is 20022020, and I am The Unity Guy™; student and educator around leadership grounded in character, unity, and spirit… delivering in English, Mandarin and French.   I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love.  I am healthy and strong, and wealthy enough to do the work I choose; living as a happy and joyful man.

That is my gift to me on 20022020.  And, it is best manifested by understanding it as reality now.  Michelangelo himself suggested that he carved the angel out of the stone, implying it was already in there.  Getting clear on that pre-existing condition of reality matters and should not be avoided as something warm and fuzzy.  It is bedrock.

So, the big picture is confirmed, and in hand.  Indeed, over the years, I have developed a system I call GREAT™ Vision.  To have a powerful vision, you set your GOAL with specifics, then get abundantly clear on its RELEVANCE for you.  You figure out how you will EVALUATE your progress.  You determine your ACTIONS necessary, and you set your TIMETABLE.  The above around which I have articulated these past few days and weeks meets the needs on goal, relevance and timetable.  Let us consider execution and evaluation.  Enter, the other two steps previously noted.

  • establish mini 90-day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and
  • execute.

First, I had a dream.  Then, I had a vision.  It was deliberated on and articulated, and reflected upon and crafted.  THEN, and now, I have a plan with a checklist for measurement.  Now, it is about the execution.

RELEVANCE MATTERS

With that in mind, I am a strong believer that relevance fuels execution.  Knowing THE WHY is vital.  I know my why.  I am approaching 60.  I am young.  My stroke taught me that life is not given; it is appreciated.  The best way we can appreciate it is to live it.  The best way to live it is to live it as you.  In the Baha’ì Faith there are several Writings that even more deeply;y speak to me at this time.

From Bahá’u’lláh

  • Noble have I created thee, yet thou hast abased thyself. Rise then unto that for which thou wast created. These words speak to me of the idea that we all are created noble but yet we sell ourselves much too short, forget who we are and are expected to rise to who we always have been.
  • Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom. This speaks to me of the vital and noble nature of education, for the betterment of the world. Speaking of which…
  • The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct.  These words speak to me of a simple power we all have; character.
  • Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.  This speaks for itself; action… execution.

They all speak to me of relevance, for me.  My humble suggestion is to get clear on what is deeply important for you.  Know your big picture, however simple it might be.  Get clear on your snapshot milestones.  Then, execute.

Therein lies the GREAT hunt.  Therein, the way to live up to our heroes.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Home Stretch, 3 Steps

Last week, I wrote on November Reign. I am one week in now, and I have further sharpened my focus for the final weeks of 2018 and heading into 2019.  The vision for 20022020…

It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.

… is now broken down into achievable steps for the remaining 54 days of this year.  What I am reminded of is this.  Having a design and picture of the building is important.  Being able to see and imagine the final structure is indeed crucial.  But growing up amidst a ton of construction people, I am especially reminded that having short term visions are the bricks that build the structure.  For now, that will be these next 54 days.  Then, into 2019, I will have effectively 90 day strategic plans. So, big picture is important… as are smaller pictures along the way.

Then there is execution.  I set last week:

  • I will walk as a student of character
  • I will learn the very basics of conversational Mandarin
  • I will prayerfully engage in my Ruhi studies
  • I will sing, write, and live with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda
  • I will teach business leadership at college and do my thing with Epic Engage™
  • I will eat “more than right” and walk daily.

These remain at core.  Execution is everything.

INSPIRED BY

All of this is intent on subscribing to LP Jacks‘ identification of the master in the art of living:

“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.”

… and doing so, ascribing to Robert Fulghum‘s guidance:

Most of what I really need to know about how to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in Kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school. These are the things I learned:
  • Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little green seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup.  They all die. So do we. And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all… L O O K ! Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation.Ecology and politics and sane living. Think of what a better world it would be if we all the whole world had cookies and milk about 3 o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own messes. And it is still true; no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

For me, it is ever crafting down to the simplicity of:

  • Living and learning character, unity, Mandarin and French, Ruhi, love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, and boxing … all the while walking with Panda, teaching business leadership, and doing my thing with Epic Engage™… and living true health and wealth.

Yup, yip, uh-huh.  Therein lies my idea of mastery and living according to kindergarten.  For now I am reminded that there are three simple steps working towards my own something cool:

  • have the big picture clearly in mind and heart
  • establish mini 90 day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and
  • execute.

Ponder for you.  What is your simple idea of a masterful life?  Again, for me… there is more, and I will share next time.  🙂

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Thanks Giving?

This weekend is Thanksgiving in Canada.  But, we run those words together too often without thinking upon their meaning.  Some questions I suggest you ponder this weekend include for what and whom are you thankful, what is about those people, places, things and ideas that cause you to be thankful, and have you articulated and expressed such specifics to them?

For what are you thankful?  To whom are you thankful?  What causes you to be so?  These are important questions.  Expressing the answers to those people, or to a higher power… is important.  One exercise I like that helps to get more clear on thanks is to explore your own Ikigai.  Ask yourself what do you love and what are you good at doing?  This is the first half of your Ikigai and gets you listing “the good”.

A second activity is to take this list of 101 virtues and think of the people, places, things and ideas for which you are thankful… and attribute the why to aspects of their character.  How do they make you feel?  What states of being do they illicit?

If you want a copy of either, please let me know.

Spending time in thanks requires us to ponder that for which we are truly thankful.  Sincerity of thanks is more important than shoulding ourselves on thanks.  Find one thing for which to be truly thankful and sink your soul into that.  Then build upon it.

In the classroom and on campus, for what are you thankful?  In business, for what are you feeling thankfulness?  As a leader, what brings out such feeling?  As a student? As a parent?  For what are you sincerely grateful?  For what do you genuinely give thanks?  Have you given it?

Tell the people who need to hear.

That is thanks GIVING.

Too Long and Too Much

TOO LONG

It has been way to long.  August 22 was my last post on Barry’s Blog.  Life both got in and out of the way.  I consciously and even unconsciously decided to step back and even stream line. I had to get back to what was important.  I had to re-center and align with the global goals as they relate to this soul.   That was good and needed.  But, now it has been way too long.  Now, it is time to get back on the horses.

TOO MUCH

Part of the problem was that I realized that there was way too much.  Even today, I came across this post on the power of simplicity in discerning and deciding how we ride.  I invite you to have a read.  Simplicity is a virtue; and one of focus.  As we carve away the unnecessary, we find the paramount.  For me, these past few months have been such a journey.  The result is that in the coming days, significant but simple changes will be made to this very site, and the focus of my work; education.

“Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.”  These words, ring and resonate within my spirit, and through every cell in my body.  They remind me that I know.

I KNOW

I know that I choose to serve world embracing educators and entrepreneurs; those who want and intend to make the world better in the classroom and in business.  Get rich quick is not my interest.  Legacy in education and entrepreneurship is.

I know I want to work with world embracing and emerging leaders… socially conscious youth and community activants who want to powerfully and practically change the world.

I know that I want to do that through my teaching, speaking and coaching.  I know I want to do that by exploring character leadership and unity building.  I know that I want to deliver on that through speaking, singing and a myriad of modalities.  I know. I do.

I know that I am an educator and that it is my life’s work.

And, I know that everything requires everything and to be ready, I must do the work.

THEN, IT GOT MORE CLEAR

Then, last Friday, we had our first ever lockdown at College.  Oh, yes we did.  Without going into detail now, I also now know at a much more palpable level that I want to be physically strong and healthy to do this work.  Indeed, at a session I facilitated this past Tuesday with the Single Parent Association (my twentieth year doing pro bono work for that wonderful organization)… and one with the Atlantic Halfway House Association the week before… I found myself articulating same.  The carriage must support the rider.  The body must effectively sustain and carry the mind and heart.

Ultimately, there is a new simplicity here.  No plans nor goals are at the core here.  What is at core is a simple understanding is that this horse needs to be healthy to run with the other horses.  In so doing, much of what my heart and mind deeply seeks to achieve will be served and reached.

Where do you need to go for less over more?  Where do you need to simplify and focus?  How can you get essential?  Your life may already be way too much for way too long.  It may be time to choose and prioritize.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

What is Your Reset?

I have been going through a strategic process or journey (conscious and unconscious) these past few months.  I expect it to continue during my summer “break” throughout my work with youth and community engagement.  During this time and on LinkedIn I have been sharing posts such as:

… among others.  This is all to say that the strategic exploration has been both purposeful and accidental.  It is not unlike traveling a river and finding multiple excursions along the way.

What I am realizing is that there is a reset underway.  It is not a wholesale reset of life, as there is much in my life I want and intend to keep.  It is more of a sharpening of the blades, to cut away the needless distractions and focus my energies and talents in ways that better fit what LP Jacks terms as the Master in the Art of Living.

  • “A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.”

For me, that is returning to the process that started this all in Aim High… and then 5 Questions of Clarity. For me, what is ever more clear this day (amidst one of the busiest weeks of the year and the news of the passing of someone who meant something more to me) is:

SPIRIT/VISION: fiercely walk with Honor and Love.

MISSION:  I endlessly champion character and unity.

ACTIONS: I do so through studying, practicing, playing, working, leading, following, teaching, speaking, coaching, dialoguing, facilitating, training, writing, singing, dancing, cartooning, and creating on same. I do so through prayer, play and profession.  I do so through my own full on road to health; mind, body, spirit, and soul.

SUCCESS: I define my success by effort, not outcome.

HAPPINESS: I enjoy the ride by making aligned choices that I go Hell Yeah on.

Even as I write this, I know this.  Amidst all of the ducks in life, I know this is my path to lead, for me.  Every cell in my body feels this.  It does not matter if its articulation to the world varies.  I know this is me; and that my actions will speak the rest.  My deeds, not words will be my adorning.

Yes, there is a reset underway.  But, like any great reset… it is about getting back to something, and doing away with the dross and distraction that might have accumulated.

By the way, I should note that unity is not uniformity nor is it everyone sitting around and singing kumbaya.  It is finding your best place and letting others find theirs.  In so doing, we all work together, whether we actually work together.  Finding your place builds unity in diversity.  That is the kind of unity that is organic, dynamic and serves us all.  That is the kind of unity I champion.  Live and let live.  Learn and let learn.  Lead and let lead.  You get it.  🙂

What is your reset?  Answer those 5 questions.  Make it real.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Being You is Not a Science

The past couple of weeks or so, I have been exploring strategy; particularly that of being you.  It was explored in:

And then, this morning, I came across this on HIRE ME.  IMHO, brilliant.  🙂  Yet, I see some of the comments saying that others would try this.  Creativity is not copying.  Individuality is not mimicking.  Being you is not hitching a ride on the coat tails of someone you admire.  It is a courageous and truthful exploration of who the hell you truly are, at your best.

Prince knew it.

He sung of it.

Being you is not a science, but an art.  It is an exploration of the now.  Our best branding, personally and professionally, is grounded in it.  As we do, we are known.

This Monday, I speak on it.  At MoMondays, I share the stage with Krista Walsh, Jon Butler, Christa Steeves and Suzanne Bloodworth.  I am looking forward to the messages of these wonderful and talented people.  My own message will be a deep, cool and even fun dive into finding that clear focus of you.  I hope you join me and us for a fun evening of exploring inspiration.  Tickets are apparently online ’til this evening… then $20 at the door.  It will be a great evening.

Ultimately: Be you, and see where that takes you.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
