A Look Back and Ahead

On November 1, 2016, we launch a new chapter with Epic Engage™.  With that in mind, and ahead of announcements, this blog post is simply intended to share some resources to date… looking back, as we Focusmove forward.

All of this is to say, our next chapter goes deeper and more fierce into all things around character and leadership… as fundamental to building strength at school, work and community.  The focus is sharper.

We hope you join us on the path.

Stay tuned and strong.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

What to Do with IT

Earlier this week, we introduced the IT Factor on LinkedIn.  In doing so, we invited you to:sing-300x200

“… consider and decide upon one joy or passion in which you find natural and healthy escape… you lose yourself “in the zone”.  It is your go to path to switching gears, allowing you to move forward by engaging your sense of personal freedom.  For me, it is my music and singing. How about you? Name it.  Claim it.  Once claimed, reflect on ways that you can make it accessible to you daily, in some way, shape or form so that it truly is go to. Make it so. Make it your go to for shifting those gears.”

Having such a go to joy can be powerful in shifting those gears, when needed.  Still, reflecting upon that Thankfulnessfor which we are most thankful tells us much more about who we are; as the real deal.  As noted in the last post (particularly in the video), we know that it is best to be thankful for all… trials and triumphs alike.  They all have value as teachers, indeed and in deed.  We know that thankfulness is a powerful virtue of grounding.  Still, when we focus our thankfulness on that for which we are most thankful, we start to get glimpses of ourselves, real; and that speaks to Integrity.

Before going any further, here is an engaging read from the Harvard Business Review… essentially around building cultures of integrity.  It is worth the time, just to open up thought.

Now, moving on…

Last night, I did my weekly WHATSUPWITDAT Facebook Live Chat.  Within these 28 minutes or so, I spoke real.  Indeed, within the video I referenced a most kind comment that was made of me by those who know my work… about being the real deal.  I do not say this for any other reason than to admit that I seek to be real.  Strength is real.  Life is real.  Challenges are real.  And success can and should be so.

So what is my point this morning?

Think about your classroom, whether you are a student or educator, counselor or administrator.  How would the IT Factor strengthen the culture in the classroom and on campus?  How would genuine gratitude for the trials and triumphs as blessings or teachers help with building a stronger classroom?  More specifically, how would exploring that for which we are each most thankful help us get to know and accept one another more?  How would it help in being more open and celebratory, expecting the best?  I can say that when I get to know my students better, the classroom is better.  When I get to know my colleagues better, the staff room is better.

And what does that do for Integrity?  What would that do for living our best, faithful to our ideals and who we are at best?  How would that impact unleashing who we each are at our best?  Then, how would that unleashing strengthen our ability to make better choices and stands based on who we are at that state of best?

Consider these questions for your workplace, business or community.  How would being truly thankful for that for which we are most thankful help us to better articulate who we are and let others know who we are?  How would it increase understanding and connection when we know and can lay claim to that which makes us most happy and grateful.  How does having a better understanding of what makes each of us truly tick help us in building the kind of team or community that is both aware and ready to work better together?  And how does that impact the integrity of each of us and the whole as well?

Rhetorical questions?  Possibly.  I humbly suggest that when we can articulate that for which we are virtuesmost thankful, we start reading our own tea leaves and can better describe who we are at core.  Others can get to know us better when they understand that for which we are most thankful and why we are so thankful for those things.  I suggest, again humbly, that such knowledge helps us to lay claim to who we are at best… and that empowers us to make better decisions, choices and stands, individually and collectively.

Ultimately, I suggest that you start deeper conversations.  Get to know both yourself and others by exploring your highest order of thankfulness.  Heighten the conversation within and without, to move beyond the simple and polite talk.  I am not suggesting counsel one another.  I am suggesting get to know one another.   Any great TV or movie or book really gets going when we get a better understanding of the real character at play.  When we better know ourselves and others, our integrity is advanced… and that engages us to make those better and wiser decisions, choices, actions and stands.  Snape knew this truth.

So, get real.  Get thankful.  Get talking.  Get listening.  Get each other.  Real conversation leads to real knowledge and real knowledge strengthens integrity.  Last night on WHATSUPWITDAT, I experienced it first hand.  Tomorrow night, we explore it live on Facebook @ Barry Lewis Green.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

The POWER of ACCEPTANCE

Earlier this week, we posted this on The Acceptance of Leadership on LINKEDIN.  Last week, we posted our latest edition of Leader ToC™ right here in the EPIC Blog.

All of that is to say that we continue here with exploring the power that is the virtue of Acceptance as a strength of leadership.  Acceptance is what I call the “starting point virtue”.  I also affectionately refer to it as the “freedom virtue”.  It frees us to to see things for what they are, when they are.  Consider the now classic version of The Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Accepting the things we cannot change, frees us to move forward.  Dale Carnegie, in his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, once wrote that we should ask ourselves what is the worst that can happen, accept that it could happen and then improve upon the worst.  Acceptance moves us beyond the WHAT-IFS to the WHAT-CAN-I-DO-NOWS.  Acceptance frees us to see the situation for what it is without precluding us from believing that we can move forward from there.

So, what situation are you facing that demands Acceptance?  What scenario is staring you down that says “Accept me for what I am so you can move forward?”  Acceptance is not surrender.  It is realism, detachment and true engagement.

This morning I head off to coach coaches around the strength of Acceptance and more.  Tomorrow evening at a slightly later time, after an education webinar I am engaged with, we will be doing an AFTER SCHOOL Facebook Live on Acceptance on Facebook. at 8:00 pm EST for this week only.  Hope you join us.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Character: Today, Tomorrow and Beyond

Earlier this week, on LINKEDIN, we shared this post on Character Everyday.  I invite you to have a read.

Tomorrow, September 22 2016, is Character Day, and we will indeed be running an AFTER School on Facebook Live at 7:30 pm EST (@ Barry Lewis Green or @ Epic Engage on Facebook) where we will explore 5 strategies for advancing strength of character and leadership at school, work and community.  This weekend, I share more still and live at the NL wellness Expo 2016.  I speak to all of that here.

That all being said and shared, I offer this as a thought.  Consider the virtues. Identify your true aaeaaqaaaaaaaaf0aaaajdayyzhiymexltq1njatndcyzi05zjblltdkn2fhotiwndmyzastrengths of character; the strengths that seem to be hard wired for you… natural for you.  Then, consider which strengths of character you most need to truly work on in order to best support your goals and plans.  Develop a simple learning plan for developing them.  Knowing your strengths is powerful.  Shoring up your challenges of character can save the day.

Here are some simple suggestions:

  • Identify the strengths of character that you most need grow and develop.
  • Identify 3-5 consistent actions or projects that will advance same for you, in real time and real world.
  • Establish a self assessment on a 1-10 scale to honestly measure your progression.  Ask yourself daily, “Where am I on that strength right now”. Do it daily and do it honestly.
  • Resolve to keep pushing the needle.

So, as we enter Character Day tomorrow, resolve yourself to identify your most strategically needed virtues for growth and development and get clear on a plan for doing so.  The ROI for your leadership will be noteworthy.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

The Why and How of Gratitude and Thankfulness

One of my favorite quotes is “Be generous in prosperity and thankful in adversity.”  Thankful, even in adversity; imagine.  Here is a LINKEDIN Pulse Post on the Power of Gratitude.  I invite you to have a read of the offering from EMMA SEPPÄLÄ, Ph.D.  In addition, I ask that you consider the virtues of Gratitude and Thankfulness.  They are indeed virtues, accessible to all.

GratitudeThankfulness

Consider the practices.  What would they look like in daily practice?  One does not wake up being fundamentally grateful or thankful after years of otherwise.  The practice of any virtue, in order to strengthen it, requires just that; practice.  Practice makes permanent.  It requires rituals… not hollow but wholeheartedly practiced.  It requires developing a daily regime that allows for and encourages that strength to strengthen.

So, my question to you is this.

What is a daily practice at morning, noon and evening that could center and strengthen you on gratitude and thankfulness?

In other words…

What would create such at least three times a day, including as you rise and retire? What would be simple enough, three times a day, that would gain you your traction on this.  The aforementioned post cites the benefits and even some ideas on practice, as do the cards.  Still, what would help to create three islands of gratitude and thankfulness each day?  As you build those islands, they will turn into continents.  Then, see where that takes you.

GratitudePeace, passion and prosperity.

Staring this Thursday September 8 2016, I will be going (for the first time) Facebook Live at 7:00 pm EST, with what I call After Class™.  It will literally be right after class for me, coming straight out of Strategic Management with my final year Human Resource Development students…  and it is indeed about our learning.  We will spend about 15-30 minutes, exploring the practice of strengths.  This week, I will introduce 5 strategies and 4 tactics for doing so, and we will center on the strengths of gratitude and thankfulness.  I am excited to launch this ongoing conversation.  Hope you join me at Barry Lewis Green (The Unity Guy) on Facebook or Epic Engage on Facebook.

I will also be presenting 4 different sessions at the 2016 NL Wellness Expo, and possibly partnering JM2with my friend and colleague Jamie McCabe of the Clay Cafe.  I encourage you to attend and experience the Expo, and engage my four sessions if you can.  Each session is independent and yet related but one will be of real value.  All 4, well that would be more so.  🙂

On another note, I encourage you to check out this post on starting up… a great read with 8 perspectives on starting up at school, business or community.

And… this post on simplicity… a Virtue and strength of character that is foundational to success, going forward.  Gratitude and Thankfulness are part of Simplicity too.
