Character: Today, Tomorrow and Beyond

Earlier this week, on LINKEDIN, we shared this post on Character Everyday.  I invite you to have a read.

Tomorrow, September 22 2016, is Character Day, and we will indeed be running an AFTER School on Facebook Live at 7:30 pm EST (@ Barry Lewis Green or @ Epic Engage on Facebook) where we will explore 5 strategies for advancing strength of character and leadership at school, work and community.  This weekend, I share more still and live at the NL wellness Expo 2016.  I speak to all of that here.

That all being said and shared, I offer this as a thought.  Consider the virtues. Identify your true aaeaaqaaaaaaaaf0aaaajdayyzhiymexltq1njatndcyzi05zjblltdkn2fhotiwndmyzastrengths of character; the strengths that seem to be hard wired for you… natural for you.  Then, consider which strengths of character you most need to truly work on in order to best support your goals and plans.  Develop a simple learning plan for developing them.  Knowing your strengths is powerful.  Shoring up your challenges of character can save the day.

Here are some simple suggestions:

  • Identify the strengths of character that you most need grow and develop.
  • Identify 3-5 consistent actions or projects that will advance same for you, in real time and real world.
  • Establish a self assessment on a 1-10 scale to honestly measure your progression.  Ask yourself daily, “Where am I on that strength right now”. Do it daily and do it honestly.
  • Resolve to keep pushing the needle.

So, as we enter Character Day tomorrow, resolve yourself to identify your most strategically needed virtues for growth and development and get clear on a plan for doing so.  The ROI for your leadership will be noteworthy.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

The Why and How of Gratitude and Thankfulness

One of my favorite quotes is “Be generous in prosperity and thankful in adversity.”  Thankful, even in adversity; imagine.  Here is a LINKEDIN Pulse Post on the Power of Gratitude.  I invite you to have a read of the offering from EMMA SEPPÄLÄ, Ph.D.  In addition, I ask that you consider the virtues of Gratitude and Thankfulness.  They are indeed virtues, accessible to all.

GratitudeThankfulness

Consider the practices.  What would they look like in daily practice?  One does not wake up being fundamentally grateful or thankful after years of otherwise.  The practice of any virtue, in order to strengthen it, requires just that; practice.  Practice makes permanent.  It requires rituals… not hollow but wholeheartedly practiced.  It requires developing a daily regime that allows for and encourages that strength to strengthen.

So, my question to you is this.

What is a daily practice at morning, noon and evening that could center and strengthen you on gratitude and thankfulness?

In other words…

What would create such at least three times a day, including as you rise and retire? What would be simple enough, three times a day, that would gain you your traction on this.  The aforementioned post cites the benefits and even some ideas on practice, as do the cards.  Still, what would help to create three islands of gratitude and thankfulness each day?  As you build those islands, they will turn into continents.  Then, see where that takes you.

GratitudePeace, passion and prosperity.

Staring this Thursday September 8 2016, I will be going (for the first time) Facebook Live at 7:00 pm EST, with what I call After Class™.  It will literally be right after class for me, coming straight out of Strategic Management with my final year Human Resource Development students…  and it is indeed about our learning.  We will spend about 15-30 minutes, exploring the practice of strengths.  This week, I will introduce 5 strategies and 4 tactics for doing so, and we will center on the strengths of gratitude and thankfulness.  I am excited to launch this ongoing conversation.  Hope you join me at Barry Lewis Green (The Unity Guy) on Facebook or Epic Engage on Facebook.

I will also be presenting 4 different sessions at the 2016 NL Wellness Expo, and possibly partnering JM2with my friend and colleague Jamie McCabe of the Clay Cafe.  I encourage you to attend and experience the Expo, and engage my four sessions if you can.  Each session is independent and yet related but one will be of real value.  All 4, well that would be more so.  🙂

Chamber Minutes: September 2016

Heading into Fall.

This is the new Chamber Minutes™; a monthly blog post in service to the Mount Pearl Paradise Chamber of Commerce and its membership, through its Board and newsletter.  Here, we will logotake a few minutes to consider a thought that might help build greater strength in the face of challenges and opportunities alike.  As a proud and fairly new member of the Chamber, Epic Engage™, is all about strength, unity and resourcefulness and how to get there.  We look forward to exploring same, in service to you… our fellow members.

This MONTH with the CHAMBER

To add some history, here is the very first “issue” posted back on May 30, 2016, introducing the Chamber itself and its services.  We still recommend it as a good read for members and those interested in membership alike.  As well, here you will find the Chamber Minutes for August 2016, in case you are catching up.  Catching up is always better than not catching up.  🙂

As you may have already noticed in the Chamber newsletter, things are happening in our business community… and we invite you to check out what is going on.  September 8th is the Chamber Golf 118-chamber_golf_tournament_is_backTournament and The Chamber is gearing up for a busy Fall, building community.  Stay tuned.  We are.

SERVICE in these TIMES

2 Fundamental Ways to Serve

That being said, this month, we thought to dig a little deeper on service and its relationship to the times in which we find ourselves.  There are a multitude of great programs around service training.  Indeed, it is a skill… and one we need to consistently and continuously perfect.  Ultimately though, here we suggest it is about foresight and value.  Randy Pennington and Joe Calloway speak to thatRandy addresses the importance of knowing where we are going and says “people run towards value”.  Joe speaks to usefulness and relevance.  Indeed, these are factors foundational to service excellence; see ahead and serve with ultimate value.  Based on this, consider:

  • How can you build an ongoing awareness of what lies ahead?  How can you build in the habit of staying alert for what is coming; working strategically beyond the day-to-day?
  • How can you add real value to the customer experience… that can be delivered simply and consistently?

Still, Service is a Spirit

Still and all, service is a spirit.  It is about caring about who we serve.  It moves beyond a focus on the Strengthoutcomes that we call revenues and centers in on our efforts. Service is the motivation, and our actions are its manifestation.  The results are our revenues and our success.  Our revenues, much like marks on an exam, are indicators of whether we are doing what we need to do.  As a business educator for 20 years, I encourage my students to focus on the effort and the results will come.  Service is a strength that is strategic and sustainable… and sustaining.

With the imminent start of the NFL Season, here are three thoughts from Vince Lombardi which I and we suggest speak to this.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.

Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.

Let the spirit sink in.

Some Other Questions to Ask

Within these times of change and challenge, trial and triumph alike… here are some questions fundamental to advancing service excellence and the success that comes from same.

  • What do we best do?
  • For whom do we best do it?
  • How can we consistently best do it?
  • How can we ever advance in our ability to respond in doing it?
  • How can we do so in a way that advances return on investment?

Answer these questions for you and your team.  Explore the power of simplicity and focus.  Simple ain’t stupid.  It is brilliant in advancing excellence of focus and service.

The Bottom Line

Service is strength…. and strategic advantage.  With that in mind, here might be three other reads of value as you move forward.

The Mount Pearl Paradise Chamber of Commerce is our chamber, and the Board is committed to ever better serving its members.  Service is excellence in the making, and more needed than ever as we forge forward as a business community.

Until next month…

Peace, passion and prosperity.Educator

broadCAST September 2016: Starting Up!

The broadCAST™ is a monthly weigh in by members of The CAST™ of Epic Engage™.  Independent experts in their own right, members of The CAST™  are asked to answer a question of simple but possibly profound nature. We wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with these experts.  They each bring great value in service to their work.  That being said, and for September 2016, we ask The CAST™:

For those considering or actually going into business or an enterprise of any nature for the first time, what is one piece of advice you might have for them to keep top of mind?

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS…

I’d like to answer this with a small shift – instead of ‘business’, I am tackling those going to college for the first time. Since “Back to School” fever is underway, I’d like to share advice with anyone going to college or university for the first time that I believe is critical to keep ‘top of mind’ as they maneuver their way through their first semester. Keep in mind that every Professor, Instructor, or Teacher is there to HELP YOU! It is an inevitable fact of school life that students tend to believe that the instructors have personalRay-300x294 vendettas against them. This usually manifests right after the first exam – 😉  But the TRUTH is that they are there to HELP YOU! So my advice is simple, yet tragically challenging for most students. Treat your instructors like you’d treat your favorite grandmother or grandfather. As bizarre as that sounds, this simple shift in how YOU treat your instructor will have a profound impact on your success as a student going forward. Don’t buy into the hype and fears of other students. Don’t believe the conspiracy theories about the ‘difficult teachers’. Believe in yourself and believe in their universal desire to see you succeed. Do this, and you will.

Ray Hollister is all about resilience and potential. He works with organizations to reveal extraordinary resilience and unlimited potential in everyone.   His powerful presentations will not only energize and inspire you, but also reveal how YOU can make radical, immediate changes to how you perceive, handle, and experience adversity resulting in experiencing life in a new and thrilling way.  www.rayhollister.net

JAMIE McCABE SAYS…

A one-word piece of advise for those entering into entrepreneurship: PASSION. I believe the one thing you need when becoming an entrepreneur is passion in and for what you do. I think this is what puts you on top of the game and drives you. Your enthusiasm is contagious and people can feel that passion and excitement when you engage them. When you enjoy it as much as I do, it radiates and it pulls your customers in to learn more about what you do and they can’t help but love it too. The old saying “choose a job that you JM2love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life”… it’s true! What’s your passion?

Jamie McCabe is all about creativity and connection. She is on a mission to bring people together through art and exploring their creative side at Clay Café Avalon. Jamie became an entrepreneur and opened the paint-your-own pottery studio in 2008 and has seen many memories painted there since then. She works with children and schools where she provides after school art programs. She believes we should color outside the lines more and embrace our inner artist. At Clay Café, it’s not about painting the perfect piece, it’s about painting the perfect memory.  www.claycafeavalon.ca

JOEL SWEENEY SAYS….

Have a documented business plan. Don’t trust to having it in your head. Having your plan documented will allow you to stay focused and to prioritize what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. It will also allow you to visualize the big picture.   Your plan should be detailed enough that it is complete. Don’t fall victim to spending too much time planning your business. Your plan is a blueprint for how your business will evolve. You will make changes to it as you become more knowledgeable. You will Joel-Sweeney-291x300discover unforeseen aspects that will need to be addressed as you go.    Your plan is your vision for your business. Refer to it often. It is the guide to building your business. You should not be doing something that is not included in the plan. If you decide that something is missing then add it to the plan. Always conduct your business according to your plan. Make adjustments as required. It is important that you keep it current. Don’t let it go stale.    You would never consider building a house without creating the plan for it in advance. The plan is the blueprint to guide in its construction. You need to treat your business the same way.

He is the author of The Wedding MC Handbook and Little Helpings of Food for Thought. His third book, The Speaker’s Tool Box – Perfecting the Craft of Speaking, was released in the 2015. He is the owner of Professionally Speaking (established in 1995). Joel helps entrepreneurs and business professional become effective, engaging and confident speakers. www.JoelSweeney.com

MAJEED MOGHARREBAN SAYS…

My advice for startups: focus on sales by talking to customers. Look at your calendar. How much time each day or week is spent actually speaking with a human being who has bought from you, can buy from you, or can refer someone to buy from you. Let those people tell you what to create (product/service) majeed-square-web-ready-300x300and how to describe it (marketing) and who else needs help with the same problem (referrals and sales). Talk to at least one customer every single day and watch your business grow.

Majeed Mogharreban is all about entrepreneurship.  He owned and sold five successful businesses and traveled to 24 countries before he was 21 years old.  After early success in business, now his mission is to support the next generation of entrepreneurs to make a difference doing what they love. His book, Winning At Life, is a guide for young people to make a plan and win at life.  www.majeedm.com

LAURIE PINHORN SAYS…

The one piece of advice I would give someone is to stay in alignment with your life’s purpose. I would advise people to provide services and products that are in alignment with your personal philosophy and your life experiences. That makes your business your passion and not just another job that you do each day. Don’t be afraid to say no to something that is not in alignment with your ideas and philosophies. It Laurieis more than okay to make the decision to not work with someone. That way, you will attract people to your business that you know that you want to work with. When you and your business are in alignment with your life’s purpose you feel like magic is happening!

TRENT LANGDON SAYS…

As a full-time educator and counselor, I have regularly contemplated and developed pseudo-business plans… and completed significant research on ‘hanging out my shingle’ and delving into private work on a part time basis. It is still a passion of mine to take this next step but I have yet to do so. The reason being… my Trent for Sitefamily, work, professional affiliations, and personal time are healthily filling my schedule.  So, my advice? I am not a fan of those stories whereby people have lost much to make their businesses successful. Though most entrepreneurial  moves require a certain degree of risk, ensure that your social-emotional and physical needs are not compromised beyond that which is manageable. It is quite difficult to put that cat back into the bag…with much more to be lost than just your business.  Here’s to personal happiness and business success!

Trent Langdon is all about building legacy through character education and development. He is a junior high school counselor for 650+ adolescents and is dedicated to serving his students, their families, and communities.  Trent works on behalf of his colleagues to build identity, protect professional roles, and to give teachers ‘a voice’; currently completing his 2nd term as a member of the Provincial Executive Council of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA) and now as a passionate candidate for NLTA Vice-President for the 2017-2019 term of office. Trent is also a Canadian Certified Counselor with the Canadian Counseling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and serves as a member of the CCPA Ethics Committee (Complaints Division).  And last but certainly not least, Trent is a proud contributor to the Epic Engage team. www.epicengage.com

SHEENA GROBB SAYS…

For those going into business for the first time?  There are so many things that could be said… so many helpful and encouraging tidbits of knowledge to pass on… “This worked for me, this didn’t work for me”.  But, one tiny piece of wisdom that seems to speak louder than all the others:  Let your business become an expression of your highest service.  Whether it’s in the type of business you run, or the way you run it, your contribution to the world will be unique to you.  So listen to your inner guidance and Sheenainstincts as you take in and integrate important guidance from others who have gone before you.  Fall, learn, try again, grow.  Just make it your own, because you are your greatest resource… the world needs more of us to show up like that.

Sheena Grobb Singer/Songwriter and Speaker… is humbly amazing. “It is without a doubt a masterpiece of songwriting and soundscape. Really incredible, soulful music. She will definitely get a huge audience in time, trust me.” Alex Wharton, Abbey Road Studios. A songbird from the age of two, songwriter at ten, with 3 albums under her belt, a nomination for the Western Canadian Music Awards, and over 500 tour dates across Canada, the US, and the UK, Sheena Grobb (one of Canada’s best kept secrets) is spilling over. With the release of her newest album, The Breakless Heart, mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, and a life changing music video created by Lindsey Nelko (past choreographer with So You Think You Can Dance), Sheena is embarking on her most meaningful project yet – The Living Compassion Project™ – inviting others to “unlock their lives” through sharing their stories… as she begins to share hers. www.sheenagrobb.com

BARRY LEWIS GREEN SAYS…

In the words of Joe Calloway, keep it simple.  The books Essentialism by Greg McKeown and Keep It Simple by Joe Calloway both speak to this; and are personal faves for me these days.  Uncluttered, uncomplicated and unfettered is best.  I am quickly getting there.  Focus on what you do best and for whom you do it best… and keep your eyes on the prize.  Your marketing, production, operations, research and development, Educatorinformation tech, human resource management and more… they must support what you do best and for whom you do it.  So start by asking yourself:

  • what do I/we do best?
  • for whom do I/we do it best?
  • where are these clients for whom I/we serve?
  • how do I/we best get to them in order to serve?
  • how can I/we do it in such a way that is sustainable?

Get the books referenced above.  Simplicity is a Virtue; and a powerful one in business.  Keep your eyes on the prize.  Excellence in service and consistency in delivery demands simplicity and fierce focus.

What Makes a Leader?

Thanks to Harry Tucker and his sharing on LINKEDIN, I read this piece on leadership in China this Strengthmorning.  If leadership is of interest to you, I believe that it is certainly worth your time.

Then, this past week there was this… the August 20 Tragically Hip ConcertGord Downie is a story in courage, honesty, integrity and leadership.  His living story illicits such responses as this video.  Millions have been moved, myself included.  In my own attempt at response, I wrote this on Facebook the day after the live show.

Maybe one of the things we can take away from the example of Gord Downie and #thetragicallyhip is the importance of living a life and work true to you… your craft… your meaning. Maybe just maybe one of the great gifts of thanks we can give back for his and their example is to find our own craft or profession or vocation, that to which we will give our love and excellence. I said many years ago that WEALTH is When Love And Excellence Take Hold. What we witnessed last night and over the years is a band that understands that. We can best honor that by learning and living from the example. Now there is a legacy. Thank you to Gord and the band for showing us what commitment, passion, purpose, honor and love looks like. While I personally was not a huge fan of the music (though I liked it) I am a huge fan of their personhood. Peace.

This all brings me to a simple question.  When I teach on Trait Theories of Leadership, I suggest to my business students that the people they see as leaders are seen by them as such because those leaders possess 101 on Blackcertain traits or strengths of character that my students believe a leader must possess.  In other words, Trait Theories of Leadership say that we pick who we see as leaders based on whether or not they possess what we believe to be the strengths of a leader.  With that in mind, taking both the aforementioned article on leadership in China and the story of Gord Downie into account, what strengths of character come to mind for you that a leader might possess?

This is no trivial exercise.  Acknowledging these strengths tells you something about what you admire and what you seek in a leader… and it gives insights into what you might like to develop and strengthen in yourself.  That is why we call it leadership, by example.  Gord Downie has sampled it for us.  What do we admire about that and him and how can we reflect it in ourselves?  How can we reflect it at school, work and community?

Leadership begins with character.  Begin there.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Service from Your P.A.S.T.

I posted this as a Facebook status last night. Ultimately great service has little to do with technique and everything to do with an attitude of service. Caring wins every time.BLG3

Before going any further I have to say that I love, appreciate and admire the work of Joe Calloway and The 5 Friends.  I invite you to have a look and listen on the topic of providing value to customers; some sage and even diverse advice going on here.  For us, our work is around character as the foundational piece to capacity, creativity and true customer care.  So, with The 5 Friends’ guidance and our own work in mind, I humbly offer these strengths as priority in getting to ultimate value through laser focus.

Purposefulness, Assertiveness, Service and Trustworthiness.  The pure focus of your service value will advance excellence.  The healthy confidence in delivering same will advance confidence in your customers.  The usefulness of your value is imperative for true buy in.  The consistency and dependability is equally so, if not more… for the longer haul.  It was certainly not intended, but indeed it is true… we must let our P.A.S.T. catch up with us (groan, lol).

Cultures that build value know what they do, confidently get it out there, focus on the utility of the work and commit to delivering on being worthy of ongoing trust.  So, here is what we suggest:

  • Reflect on these virtues; these strengths of character… from the cards noted above.
  • Reflect on their behaviours; the practices that manifest such strengths.
  • Ponder and develop your own specific list of behaviours and actions that will manifest them every day.
  • Get clear on them and where you are and want to be with them.  Make them important measurables.
  • Then, start implementing them and encouraging them.

This is a starting point to advancing value and excellence driven cultures.  See where that takes you.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
