Summer Cookin’ with the AL’s

You can call me AL for this blog, lol. But this post is about some new Summer cookin’ for yours truly.  You see, last Wednesday, I posted this on Check In and Conclude.  And now, with Summer in fuller swing, I posted this latest issue of The broadCAST™ for July 2019.  As part of the CHECK IN, I offered…

“As part of my 20022020 Vision, here is what I am cluing up between now and July 1.

  • Getting my weigh scales, gym and Panda ready for a Summer of full on wellness, including my first ground setting meeting with a nutritionist Friday… all towards that 36” Waist, Lean and Strong.
  • Setting my schedule for LEARNING this Summer:
    • MBa – Character Leadership and Unity Building
    • Mandarin and French
    • Ruhi Intensive
  • Preliminary PLANNING for CNA and MUN into Fall 2019.
  • Developing my 5 Year W.E.A.L.T.H. Plan for 2019-24.
  • Re-engineering the Epic Engage™ website, including a schedule of project plans.”

But The broadCAST™ moved me to revisit my GROWTHery list leading up to February 20, 2020… with my AL’s work.

Strategic Patience

I have been pondering Patience a bit of late.  Last week, I shared on Patiently Something Fierce. I suggest it a worthy little read, with links.  That being said, I am pondering the strategic application of Patience.

Patience is a powerful strength of character in moving forward and facing the future.  Patience is not simply biting our tongue or holding our breath.  It is a knowing that we will get there; wherever there might be.  Water is patient.  It gets where it needs to go, eventually, despite blocks and dams and obstacles.  It will find a way.  Sometimes it will roar and rush.  Sometimes it will flow, or even trickle.  Sometimes even, it will seem stagnant but it is either evaporating or seeping into the water table.  Either way, it will get where it is going.  It is Patience, as strength.  Much of nature knows this too.  Do the work, and inherently trust in the outcome.

I saw this same quality in Chris Ballard, GM of the Indianapolis Colts in his season closing remarks.  Patience is a quiet but powerful knowing that, as we focus on our work, things will happen.  Patience is a powerful form of confidence.  It is poise personified.  It trusts.  It understand that there is work to do, but it trusts in the process.  So, going forward, it is a powerful, practical strength of character, and it is grown in practice.  For me, the T’ra’at is indeed talking.

When we look on other matters, we need to be strategic in understanding when Patience is called upon, and not.  I strongly suggest that Patience is a noble practice in working and living with others.  Everyone has a journey.  That being said, I have fallen prey in my life to excessively waiting on people with respect to work and projects and initiatives, often over accommodating for their hesitancy.  Unfortunately that hesitancy is often grounded in their inability to say that they are not truly ready, willing or able… and in their desire to politely agree so as not to disappoint.  While we should and must be patient with people, that does not imply that we should accommodate thusly.  Great advice given to me years ago, but only now fully gotten is…

  • … go fiercely in the direction that your soul calls and see who shows up.  Do not entertain the well -intended.  Engage the intent.  Do not accommodate the polite “cannot say no” travelers.  Ride with those who have identified they are going there too.  Be patient with those who cannot or truly do not want to ride with you, but not patient in waiting on them changing their hearts or minds.  The train is rolling, and the right ones will catch up.

I am munching on this; digesting it.  Patience is a strength, and a strategic one at that.  It is wise to know when and where and with whom it is required.

As Joe Calloway puts it in his book The Leadership Mindset, “As the leader, you are the prime keeper and defender of the culture. It is your job. While everyone is part of the culture, you can’t delegate this one because you are the embodiment of the culture. Regardless of what it says on the poster in the break room about ‘Our Culture’ everyone looks to you, what you say, and, more important, how you behave to know what the organization stands for.”  You must assert same.  Patience tells you move forward and trust in the process.  It also tells you that, if some are not on board, you must keep moving.

Whether in school, at work, in business or throughout community… the strategic strength that is Patience must be considered.  As of tomorrow, I have 400 days left for my 20022020 Vision.

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building. I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global. I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more. I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love. My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all. I am teaching business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and doing my global work of Epic Engage™. I am loving it! I am 110K in weight (slim for my body structure) and benching same; healthy and strong. And, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.

Slow and steady patience in building that vision; I am reminded.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Patiently Something Fierce

“Somethin’ fierce” is a phrase I have heard turned locally over the years.  “That weather was somethin’ fierce” … meaning it was definitely intense.  Last week, I posted on The Pit Stop of Patience and the importance that the virtue that is Patience plays in living our best lives.  I believe that it was Elizabeth Barrett Browning who wrote of what we could learn of Patience in nature.

‘O DREARY life,’ we cry, ‘ O dreary life ! ‘
And still the generations of the birds
Sing through our sighing, and the flocks and herds
Serenely live while we are keeping strife
With Heaven’s true purpose in us, as a knife
Against which we may struggle ! Ocean girds
Unslackened the dry land, savannah-swards
Unweary sweep, hills watch unworn, and rife
Meek leaves drop year]y from the forest-trees
To show, above, the unwasted stars that pass
In their old glory: O thou God of old,
Grant me some smaller grace than comes to these !–
But so much patience as a blade of grass
Grows by, contented through the heat and cold.

Panda, my #bestlittledogintheworld demonstrates it.  This morning, I am still reflecting on its power to wait and believe, and trust.  This morning though, I am also reminded of the strength that is fierceness.  Panda demonstrates such as well.  The word fierce can conjure up images of violence and aggression.  But its meaning can also illicit thoughts of strength and assertion.  I consider the former to be faux fierce, and the latter to be the real stuff.  I need the real stuff with my buckets of health, education, service and love this year.  I especially need it with respect to continuing getting back to a healthy, strong body.  Patient and Fierce, oh yes.

Fierce is that strength of both veracity and tenacity.  Veracity is that strength of character grounded in Truthfulness.  Tenacity is that strength grounded in Determination.  Now, imagine Patience with this twin winged power of Truthfulness and Determination.  This does not imply that one has to be the proverbial bull in a China shop.  That, I still consider to be the faux fierce.

It does imply that we know our best destination; the one for which we have the utmost resolve.  It does imply that we not obsess on that which distracts us… our frustrations, fears and idle fantasies.  It does imply that we are (as my dear soul sis and I refer to as) holy all in full arse.  We are wholehearted with being fierce. We are stronger than our fear.  Indeed, the only and true fear we have is in not reaching for that destination, of service and life.  We are willing to give our very all for it.

Imagine the strength that is the balance of Patience and Fierceness.  Imagine the Trust and Certitude in having a clear and strong sense of who you are and where your soul knows you need go.  Imagine that Patience to know you will get there.  Imagine that Fierceness that will bring you the resolve to do so.  One is your ballast.  The other is your sail.

For me, I am pondering such capacity this morning as I continue my journey, and into a new year.   I am reminded by colleagues of the capacity that this time of year potentially brings.  I am reminded that I need to be patiently something fierce.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

The Pit Stop of Patience

On New Year’s Eve, I wrote this on And So It is New Year 2019. It concerned itself with vision and goals, purpose, meaning, character and more… and I truly and humbly do suggest the read.

Last night and today, January 1-2 in the Northeast Avalon including St. John’s and Mount Pearl, we were met with this storm.  At first it promised to be a blizzard, but it turned and is turning out to be two storms in one.  I even liken it to a bit of a snowy hurricane; high winds and snow, lightening up with rain and freezing rain for a bit, then returning to snow and very high winds.  It has grounded the city, at the very beginning of the new year.  For a snapshot look, notice the shovel handle in the far right of the photo, just outside the door.

Yup, walloped a bit hard, and amidst all the plans for the new year.  Social media has been filled with messages for a great new year, and I am sure many had plans to hit the ground running, myself included.  For me, the intent was and is to launch the new EPIC Speakernet…. 26 expert speakers coming together to be available for conferences and events in Newfoundland and Labrador… effective and officially today.  The thought was and is to launch the introduction of #hUmaNITY and Project BLACKWING™… this week.  The thought was and is to launch our now 19 free services… including DELIVER™, CAPS Cares, and Speakeasies™.  And yes, our updated site.  Yes, there were great intentions, and I guess, by noting them here, I have kind of introduced and/or launched each.  Still, I am reminded that journeys require patience.  Even just two days in can test the journey.  We are eager to get at it.  Then, right at the beginning, a wheel can fall off.

Patience is not about biting our tongues or holding our breaths.  Patience is the power (or at least one of the core powers) of the hunt, and the journey.  The hunt is not simply about the chase, but the wait.

And that can be weighty for many of us.  I know that it can be for me. But then and tonight, I think…

Consider Patience

The Virtues Reflection Card says it is hopeful and expectant, un-rushed and gentle with mistakes.  It says it accepts where we are, with an essential confidence that that is not where we will stay.  Patience does not panic or become disturbed or doubtful.  It breathes well. It trusts that we will make it.  It is the tortoise over the hare.  It has a quiet confidence, and sense of certitude.  It know it will get there.

As my back is “gone” and the snow keeps coming, I need to understand this.  As we each reach for that which we most soulfully desire this year, in whatever areas and arenas of our lives, we need to remember that Rome took more than a day.  Our souls know that.  Our egos struggle with it.  Listen to your soul.  Our lives are journeys.  Our years are segments.  Our days are miles.  Some miles are pit stops and we (I) must remember that the pit stops are necessary.  Indeed, I believe it was the remarkable Stephen Covey who once referenced that sometimes we are too busy to stop for gas, and we must stop for gas.

So, as you venture forth in 2019, enjoy the ride, be alert to the times for both movement and stillness.  If it helps, I offer up this prayer I say in remembrance of my sister.

  • Make me ready, in all circumstances, O my Lord, to serve Thee and to set myself towards the adored sanctuary of Thy Revelation and of Thy Beauty. If it be Thy pleasure, make me to grow as a tender herb in the meadows of Thy grace, that the gentle winds of Thy will may stir me up and bend me into conformity with Thy pleasure, in such wise that my movement and my stillness may be wholly directed by Thee.

Among other things, it speaks to me of the necessity of movement and stillness.  It is not all up to me.  I am simply to be ready.  This storm is out of my control, as is much in life.  What is within my grasp is the ability to be ready.  In education, leadership, business community building and more… certainly, in life … in 2019, I wish that you live your life ready and to be alert to the things that come your way.

Listen and live.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

GREAT Goals and the HUNT

Last week, I shared in Homes Stretch, 3 Steps that, among other things, I am reminded there are three simple but hard steps working towards our own something cool … first, have the big picture clearly in mind and heart… second, establish mini 90-day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and, third, execute.  The hard part is to take the time in getting clear… and in the doing it.  Yes, clarity and commitment to follow through are simple and hard.  And, crucial.  This week, after an eventful, soul searching and eye opening week, I offer the following.

THE BIG PICTURE STAYS TRUE

If anything, this week confirmed for me that my big picture vision stands.  It is important to be clear… and clarity requires diligence in the reflection on same.  Clarity requires digging and questioning and observing and listening.  This week, I had numerous moments to do so and get sure.  My vision remains, and stronger for the reflection this week.

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and more of what and who I love.

That being said, this week also suggested that I might boil it down to:

  • It is 20022020, and I am The Unity Guy™; student and educator around leadership grounded in character, unity, and spirit… delivering in English, Mandarin and French.   I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love.  I am healthy and strong, and wealthy enough to do the work I choose; living as a happy and joyful man.

That is my gift to me on 20022020.  And, it is best manifested by understanding it as reality now.  Michelangelo himself suggested that he carved the angel out of the stone, implying it was already in there.  Getting clear on that pre-existing condition of reality matters and should not be avoided as something warm and fuzzy.  It is bedrock.

So, the big picture is confirmed, and in hand.  Indeed, over the years, I have developed a system I call GREAT™ Vision.  To have a powerful vision, you set your GOAL with specifics, then get abundantly clear on its RELEVANCE for you.  You figure out how you will EVALUATE your progress.  You determine your ACTIONS necessary, and you set your TIMETABLE.  The above around which I have articulated these past few days and weeks meets the needs on goal, relevance and timetable.  Let us consider execution and evaluation.  Enter, the other two steps previously noted.

  • establish mini 90-day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and
  • execute.

First, I had a dream.  Then, I had a vision.  It was deliberated on and articulated, and reflected upon and crafted.  THEN, and now, I have a plan with a checklist for measurement.  Now, it is about the execution.

RELEVANCE MATTERS

With that in mind, I am a strong believer that relevance fuels execution.  Knowing THE WHY is vital.  I know my why.  I am approaching 60.  I am young.  My stroke taught me that life is not given; it is appreciated.  The best way we can appreciate it is to live it.  The best way to live it is to live it as you.  In the Baha’ì Faith there are several Writings that even more deeply;y speak to me at this time.

From Bahá’u’lláh

  • Noble have I created thee, yet thou hast abased thyself. Rise then unto that for which thou wast created. These words speak to me of the idea that we all are created noble but yet we sell ourselves much too short, forget who we are and are expected to rise to who we always have been.
  • Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom. This speaks to me of the vital and noble nature of education, for the betterment of the world. Speaking of which…
  • The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct.  These words speak to me of a simple power we all have; character.
  • Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.  This speaks for itself; action… execution.

They all speak to me of relevance, for me.  My humble suggestion is to get clear on what is deeply important for you.  Know your big picture, however simple it might be.  Get clear on your snapshot milestones.  Then, execute.

Therein lies the GREAT hunt.  Therein, the way to live up to our heroes.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

An Invitation to Bucket

In my return to Barry’s Blog last week, I wrote on Too Long and Too Much and Thanksgiving. Amidst this past weekend, I had a personal a-ha and it resulted in LinkedIn posts on a 500 day journey towards my 60th birthday.  Just this morning, I wrote on Commitment and Day 2.  I have long been about exploring character and building healthy unity.  The a-ha serves both.  All of that is to say, I am now extending an invitation to you and yours to walk with me on the journey.  If you decide so, discern on your buckets of interest.  I call them the ALs, as they all end in “al”.  🙂

  • Spiritual… your spiritual, soulful life
  • Emotional… relationships and love
  • Material… the stuff
  • Physical… your health
  • Financial… things money
  • Educational… what you intend to study and learn and master
  • Vocational… work, service and calling
  • Social… contributions to community
  • Inspirational… the joyful for you

Even this morning I have updated a little.  I have opted to combine mine down to 5.

  • Educational, which will include my MBa, Mandarin, French and even spiritual
  • Joyful… which will include emotional, and inspirational
  • Work and Service… including vocational, and social
  • Physical… my health
  • WEALTH… including material and financial

My five buckets statement to be filled by 20022020 (my 60th birthday) goes like this:

Those are my five for Fidelity (promise kept) and Commitment (follow through).  You need not choose 5 buckets.  Choose one, if that calls to you.  But, here is the thing.  Whenever you join the journey, we set our sights on 20022020, to have a cool, funky online celebration.  Imagine the feeling.  Join me.  I hope you do.  I dare you to…

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Steadfast and Flexible

Some two weeks back, I offered This is Day One:  The Journal Begins.  In it, I said, among other things…

  • “On December 31, I posted this wish of Happy 2018!  Within it, I offered thoughts on 5 strategies for the incoming year.  I believe it worth a read and viewing… and reflection.  If making this an authentic and great year is important, I doubly suggest so.
  • The C.A.S.T.™ also, collectively, offered this post on 10 perspectives on goals and their achievement; and I humbly but strongly recommend the read as well.  There are views and thoughts worth the time, plus music and message that can add to your launch into 2018.”

I offer this to say, “How is your new year going thus far?”

What is it bringing you?  What are you bringing to it?  Is it more of the same ol’ same ol’?  If so, what needs changing?  Are the challenges heightened?  If so, what needs to be called upon within you to rise to those challenges, in whatever healthy form?  Is it going great, full on and better than expected?  How can you best ride that wave to ensure sustainability as best you can?

Either way…

… the arbitrary changing of dates does not necessarily change anything; as much as the fireworks might say otherwise.  The 1st of the year is but a convenient anchor point for a somewhat inconvenient truth.  Much of it is our choice.  It is our choice in terms of how we act and respond.  It is our choice in terms of how much we accept and do not.  It is our choice to get back on the horse or not.  That is our responsibility… our response ability.

I heard it said years ago that every diet works.  Some are healthier than others, but every diet works… if we avoid the one fatal step.  When we fall off, however briefly, do we give up or get back at it?  The nutritional counselor in the radio interview said that, if we do well for 6 days and bad for one…. we will be successful… if we get back at it.  This is true of anything as goal.

It is true in matters of business, health, job hunting, and more.

For me…

I entered this year, with great progress in my walking… 105,000-120,000 steps a week.  A week ago, my left ankle pulled and I have had to bring things back.  But I adjusted, both exercise and diet (not a “diet”, my food intake).  I remain eating healthy and walking to a lesser degree, for now.  The result?

I sit here, writing, in pants that are 42″ waist, down from a max of almost 50″ at one point.  I am in an online exercise and walking group using Fitbit, and I am even guest hosting some online exercise classes for my friend Krista Walsh… aaagh.  I am adapting and reducing and managing this journey.  I am making better choices.

Steadfastness and Flexibility

This is the one area for the last almost 20 years that has been challenging.  It was challenging because (a) I never found the answer that worked for my temperament (until now) and because, in the past, when I fell off, I did not successfully reset.  I did not adjust.

Darwin never actually said it was “survival of the fittest”.  He essentially said it was survival of the most adaptable.  Rivers get where they are going… they may meander, go to trickles, then rapids and falls but they get where they are going.

All of this is to say that steadfastness and flexibility are important elements of our growth.  They are heroic in nature.  We learn and adapt but we do not give up.  Wherever you are with your goals, know that this is always DAY ONE.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

This Day One: The Journal Begins

On December 31, I posted this wish of Happy 2018!  Within it, I offered thoughts on 5 strategies for the incoming year.  I believe it worth a read and viewing… and reflection.  If making this an authentic and great year is important, I doubly suggest so.

The C.A.S.T.™ also, collectively, offered this post on 10 perspectives on goals and their achievement; and I humbly but strongly recommend the read as well.  There are views and thoughts worth the time, plus music and message that can add to your launch into 2018.

And then … two nights ago, I started.  I started on a video journal of this newly elevated road back to personal and optimal health … and what I am learning along the way.  I started to document the results from spending cool time in my FOXhole Gym, with my music and mementos and meaning all surrounding me.  I am calling it This is Day One, as each day is a new day.  Here are my first 3 installments.

Each is about 5 minutes.  In their totality they start to examine intention, habit, motivation, anchoring, focus and chasing a vision.  I offer them for your consideration; whatever your goals or desires for a better life at school, work, community or life might be.  As the next three months go, I will be sharing learnings on this journey and aspects of character that are crucial.  The intention is to practice, experience and observe character and behaviour in reaching for your goals.

It is offered in service.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

HAPPY 2018!

BARRY’S BLOG

Happy New Year!  I posted this on Facebook and LinkedIn on the Eve…

Call it a #promise or a #resolution. Both, by definition, imply #commitment to an #action or #goal. Be your own best friend and promise yourself something truly important to you… truly important. What matters to you most in 2018? Do that. #leadership

However you celebrate… do so with joy and care.  And, may 2018 be your best year yet.  For me, I choose to celebrate in reflecting back and dreaming forward, with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda… who does NOT like the fireworks in the neighborhood and appreciates her “dad” being around.  Besides, I love the time because it allows me to center amidst a purposeful and filled life.  So, as we enter into 2018, I offer the above… and this video wish.

And, after a promise to do so… I now offer these five videos addressing the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project™ and how they might help in making 2018 your best yet.

These five strategies can be powerful daily building blocks to having a cool year, if practiced.  With that in mind, I invite you to hold on to this post and these videos… in order to engage the cool work this year.

That all being said… in 2018… I wish you…

Peace, passion and prosperity.

The broadCAST™ is a monthly weigh in by members of The CAST™ of Epic Engage™.  Independent experts in their own right, and I am humbly proud to say friends of mine… members of The CAST™  have an opportunity to share their earned insights right here, for you, each month.  With that in mind, we wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with these experts on their respective bodies of work and how they might be of service to you.  They each bring such great value in service to their respective work and audiences.

December 2017

This month, we are continuing with our evolving new look, feel and delivery to the broadCAST™.  As we head towards that “magical season” these coming weeks, we thought to bring some new sparkle going into 2018.  Focusing on Campus, Creativity, Communications, Life, Music and more… we hope you engage and enjoy.   This month, we explore thoughts around gifts; inner and outer. 🙂

THE CAMPUS CORNER

Trent, Ray and I are offering a section called The Campus Corner where we each offer a short tip or idea on teaching or learning or some aspect of education and leadership; one simple idea from each of our bodies of expertise.  To start…

TRENT LANGDON SAYS

As we approach the end of another calendar year and a well-deserved holiday break for all, the educator is no doubt caught in the seasonal and professional rush. Attempting to finalize your academic responsibilities while playing the proverbial pinball between family and friends can take its toll.  Simplify as much as possible, clearly plan your blueprint for the final few days, and hold on for the ride.  So, reflecting upon the school year that has been thus far, and taking your ‘impact inventory’, what have been your fence posts or your ‘take-aways’ so to speak? Are your thoughts primarily consumed with the challenges that created great stress and difficulty or are you able to find balance by also highlighting those great breakthroughs that provided strength and energy? I suggest that we must:

  • Continuously remind ourselves to keep our impact efforts at the forefront and also be willing to address those potholes that create danger in the road ahead.
  • Treasure and intentionally document the ‘impact’ moments with your students. Take a step back and realize that every interaction has meaning.
  • Understand that the teacher-student relationship should be rooted in reciprocal meaning and well-being for both.

I will have some more to add in the upcoming Leaducator™ Experience this very week.  I invite you to stay tuned.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Holidays and New Year!

Trent Langdon is all about finding identity & building ‘life legacy’ through character education, integrity-based living, and social-emotional development. He is a junior high school counselor for nearly 700 adolescents and is dedicated to serving his students, their families, and communities. In addition, Trent works on behalf of his colleagues to build identity, protect professional roles, and to give teachers ‘a voice’; he is serving as Vice-President of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA) for the 2017-2019 term of office. Trent is also a Canadian Certified Counselor with the Canadian Counseling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).  And last but certainly not least, Trent is a proud contributor to the Epic Engage™ team and co-author of The Leaducator Experience™.  Check out Trent’s blog.

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS

Character, Accountability, and Responsibility – CAR – may be the most undervalued pillars of getting good grades by students today. I frequently ask students, “What kind of CAR do you drive?” It is a rhetorical question asked of students to have them stop and reflect on a specific aspect of school that is almost never openly discussed. Specifically, I ask them to honestly identify (for themselves) what character they bring to school, what accountability they have for their education, and what responsibility do they hold to get the most out of school. Three universal truths that seem to be ignored (probably because it is ‘unfair’) are:

  1. The character you exhibit during class, interacting with classmates and interacting with teachers has an enormous impact on your scholastic success.
  2. Holding yourself personally accountable for the results of your studying, your tests, and your actions has an enormous impact on your scholastic success.
  3. Taking personal responsibility for your work, your grades, and your behavior has an enormous impact on your scholastic success.

These truths are not ‘fair’ or ‘unfair’ on their own. But unfortunately, over the years a new mindset seems to have emerged (commonly referred to, rightly or wrongly, as the Millennial Mindset) that celebrates the idea that you are owed good grades simply for showing up at school. There are those that think it is unfair that a well-dressed, articulate, polite student who frequently seeks feedback from teachers seems to consistently get better grades than anyone else. Yet, when given the same opportunity (dress well, be articulate and polite, seek counsel of teachers), they shy away from it claiming they ‘shouldn’t have to do that’…  And that is the whole point – they DO NOT HAVE TO DO THAT! But, yet it remains true that the results are better when those actions are taken.

Being of good character is not a chore, nor is it a sign of weakness! Quite the opposite, actually. Taking responsibility for oneself is not required, but the results gained from doing so are astonishing. Being accountable for your work and behavior is not compulsory, but for those who do so, the results are exceptional. These three hallmarks of a stellar student are FREE and ACCESSIBLE to EVERYONE. Yet few choose this path. So this Christmas Season, I offer you a minor shift in the Scrooge classic along a scholastic theme:

  1. The Ghost of Character Past asks how your Character has influenced what your teachers think about you, what your classmates think about you, and what those around you think about you. How has your character impacted your grades?
  2. The Ghost of Accountability Present asks how do you hold yourself accountable? How does your current mindset about accountability influence the quality of your learning?
  3. The Ghost of Responsibility Future asks how will your grades change if you take full responsibility for your own work, your own learning, your own test scores? How will this impact your scholastic success?

Now I ask you to imagine it is Christmas Day in scholastic heart; when you throw open the shutters and take in the crisp morning air, what does your future hold? What do you shout to the world? What kind of CAR will you drive?

Ray Hollister is all about strength, excellence and potential. In fact, he has a very special connection raywith students – he’s helped thousands achieve average scores of over 90% for 20 years! His love of learning… and his ability to teach anybody the same easy strategies he used to study far less than everyone else while maintaining outrageously high test scores… quickly earned him a lot of ‘friends’ seeking his advice. Ray has personally conducted numerous studies to develop an intense, focused, and  results oriented program for college students. With the success of that program, Ray set his sights on helping younger students in Junior High, High School, and those just entering University. The end result is a program that will help any student – especially YOU – learn more, study less, and earn consistently high grades.  www.rayhollister.net

BARRY LEWIS GREEN SAYS

December has that notion of “gift giving” associated with it; whether Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever celebration one might engage this time of year.  I certainly see the diversity of friendship, talent and perspective of The CAST™ as a gift, for me… and I truly hope you.  My band, Elevation, too.  Still, here, I share some thoughts around discerning our inner gifts… thoughts I think important for students, teachers and anyone who sees life as the possibility of learning and growth.

CREATION CORNER

Jamie, each month, will offer a thought to ponder on Creativity; drawing on her longstanding expertise and experience in advancing same in others.  For this month…

JAMIE McCABE SAYS

Friends, I hope this does not come across as “selly”.  But… With the holidays fast approaching, you know the stress and worry that comes with it … of what to give others as a small token of  love or friendship. I know too, as I too struggle with what to get my mother in law or sisters for the holidays. I like to put a lot of thought into it so they know how much I care about them. I read an article the other day however, about giving “experiences” for the holidays. I thought, that is perfect! I love spending time with family and friends. What if your gifts too … were an experience. What would that look like? Well, that’s exactly what we do here at Clay Cafe! We give the gift of creativity! You will never have to give a receipt with your gift from us because you will never get the wrong color or the wrong size. How about the gift of presence? That’s right, presence! Put down your phone, get off that laptop or trv and bring someone on a date and give them the gift of being present. You can have just as much fun painting pottery with someone as you did watching that cute kitten video. The best gift I ever gave was a video I made for my Dad that began with my mom and him when they first started dating, right up into his three kids, grandkids…it was a life montage to music. He loves that video and we watch it at least 4 times a year. It was handmade with love. That’s what matters the most. So for this holiday season, give an experience, however you manifest it.  Here at the Clay Cafe, you can hand paint a gift or give the gift of painting the perfect memory with someone you love. You will have a masterpiece to remind you of your paint date that you can use and talk about for years to come. Either way, experience the Season!

JM2Jamie McCabe is all about creativity and connection. She is on a mission to bring people together through art and exploring their creative side at Clay Café Avalon. Jamie became an entrepreneur and opened the paint-your-own pottery studio in 2008 and has seen many memories painted there since then. She works with children and schools where she provides after school art programs. She believes we should color outside the lines more and embrace our inner artist. At Clay Café, it’s not about painting the perfect piece, it’s about painting the perfect memory.  www.claycafeavalon.ca

CRAZY COOL CORNER…

Liz and Krista will be contributing on life hacks for living a cool LIFE… simple tips for better living.  It will be crazy cool.  For this month…

LIZ BURT SAYS

Hope you are well and enjoying the pre-Christmas excitement. It’s almost Christmas and, as the year draws to a close, I’m trying to take a little extra time to reflect and practice gratitude. I’ve been very fortunate this year to take a huge leap forward in my career, make a bunch of new friends, move into a cute cosy new home, and we even adopted the sweetest cuddliest cat.  Gratitude for these things is easy but on the bad days when things seem bleak, we really should try and remember all that we have to be grateful for. I think when we are so focused on progressing, achieving and improving our lives we can lose sight of how far we’ve come. The setbacks I experienced in the last few years gave me a far greater perspective, pushed me to work harder and made the triumphs of 2017 so much sweeter.  Gratitude is such an important element of a content and happy life.  So, as you celebrate the holiday season, take a little extra time to count your blessings. Think of those less fortunate and remember that even the struggles of today could one day be a gift in disguise!

Liz Burt is about real and healthy results.  She is a master motivator. She is also a marathoner and marketing specialist living in Calgary, AB. She holds a three-year diploma in Business Management and Marketing, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, and will begin her MA at the University of Alberta this spring. In addition to being wild about learning and running, Liz is also an avid traveller and has backpacked through twenty countries in the last few years. In her professional life she loves working with small businesses to develop simple and effective marketing and communications plans that achieve real results. She is creative, a bit of a health nut and loves to share her healthy passions in her blog. Liz is a goal setter and risk taker. She loves coffee, cooking, and great conversations.
