broadCAST December 2017: All About Gifts

The broadCAST™ is a monthly weigh in by members of The CAST™ of Epic Engage™.  Independent experts in their own right, and I am humbly proud to say friends of mine… members of The CAST™  have an opportunity to share their earned insights right here, for you, each month.  With that in mind, we wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with these experts on their respective bodies of work and how they might be of service to you.  They each bring such great value in service to their respective work and audiences.

December 2017

This month, we are continuing with our evolving new look, feel and delivery to the broadCAST™.  As we head towards that “magical season” these coming weeks, we thought to bring some new sparkle going into 2018.  Focusing on Campus, Creativity, Communications, Life, Music and more… we hope you engage and enjoy.   This month, we explore thoughts around gifts; inner and outer. 🙂

THE CAMPUS CORNER

Trent, Ray and I are offering a section called The Campus Corner where we each offer a short tip or idea on teaching or learning or some aspect of education and leadership; one simple idea from each of our bodies of expertise.  To start…

TRENT LANGDON SAYS

As we approach the end of another calendar year and a well-deserved holiday break for all, the educator is no doubt caught in the seasonal and professional rush. Attempting to finalize your academic responsibilities while playing the proverbial pinball between family and friends can take its toll.  Simplify as much as possible, clearly plan your blueprint for the final few days, and hold on for the ride.  So, reflecting upon the school year that has been thus far, and taking your ‘impact inventory’, what have been your fence posts or your ‘take-aways’ so to speak? Are your thoughts primarily consumed with the challenges that created great stress and difficulty or are you able to find balance by also highlighting those great breakthroughs that provided strength and energy? I suggest that we must:

  • Continuously remind ourselves to keep our impact efforts at the forefront and also be willing to address those potholes that create danger in the road ahead.
  • Treasure and intentionally document the ‘impact’ moments with your students. Take a step back and realize that every interaction has meaning.
  • Understand that the teacher-student relationship should be rooted in reciprocal meaning and well-being for both.

I will have some more to add in the upcoming Leaducator™ Experience this very week.  I invite you to stay tuned.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Holidays and New Year!

Trent Langdon is all about finding identity & building ‘life legacy’ through character education, integrity-based living, and social-emotional development. He is a junior high school counselor for nearly 700 adolescents and is dedicated to serving his students, their families, and communities. In addition, Trent works on behalf of his colleagues to build identity, protect professional roles, and to give teachers ‘a voice’; he is serving as Vice-President of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA) for the 2017-2019 term of office. Trent is also a Canadian Certified Counselor with the Canadian Counseling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).  And last but certainly not least, Trent is a proud contributor to the Epic Engage™ team and co-author of The Leaducator Experience™.  Check out Trent’s blog.

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS

Character, Accountability, and Responsibility – CAR – may be the most undervalued pillars of getting good grades by students today. I frequently ask students, “What kind of CAR do you drive?” It is a rhetorical question asked of students to have them stop and reflect on a specific aspect of school that is almost never openly discussed. Specifically, I ask them to honestly identify (for themselves) what character they bring to school, what accountability they have for their education, and what responsibility do they hold to get the most out of school. Three universal truths that seem to be ignored (probably because it is ‘unfair’) are:

  1. The character you exhibit during class, interacting with classmates and interacting with teachers has an enormous impact on your scholastic success.
  2. Holding yourself personally accountable for the results of your studying, your tests, and your actions has an enormous impact on your scholastic success.
  3. Taking personal responsibility for your work, your grades, and your behavior has an enormous impact on your scholastic success.

These truths are not ‘fair’ or ‘unfair’ on their own. But unfortunately, over the years a new mindset seems to have emerged (commonly referred to, rightly or wrongly, as the Millennial Mindset) that celebrates the idea that you are owed good grades simply for showing up at school. There are those that think it is unfair that a well-dressed, articulate, polite student who frequently seeks feedback from teachers seems to consistently get better grades than anyone else. Yet, when given the same opportunity (dress well, be articulate and polite, seek counsel of teachers), they shy away from it claiming they ‘shouldn’t have to do that’…  And that is the whole point – they DO NOT HAVE TO DO THAT! But, yet it remains true that the results are better when those actions are taken.

Being of good character is not a chore, nor is it a sign of weakness! Quite the opposite, actually. Taking responsibility for oneself is not required, but the results gained from doing so are astonishing. Being accountable for your work and behavior is not compulsory, but for those who do so, the results are exceptional. These three hallmarks of a stellar student are FREE and ACCESSIBLE to EVERYONE. Yet few choose this path. So this Christmas Season, I offer you a minor shift in the Scrooge classic along a scholastic theme:

  1. The Ghost of Character Past asks how your Character has influenced what your teachers think about you, what your classmates think about you, and what those around you think about you. How has your character impacted your grades?
  2. The Ghost of Accountability Present asks how do you hold yourself accountable? How does your current mindset about accountability influence the quality of your learning?
  3. The Ghost of Responsibility Future asks how will your grades change if you take full responsibility for your own work, your own learning, your own test scores? How will this impact your scholastic success?

Now I ask you to imagine it is Christmas Day in scholastic heart; when you throw open the shutters and take in the crisp morning air, what does your future hold? What do you shout to the world? What kind of CAR will you drive?

Ray Hollister is all about strength, excellence and potential. In fact, he has a very special connection raywith students – he’s helped thousands achieve average scores of over 90% for 20 years! His love of learning… and his ability to teach anybody the same easy strategies he used to study far less than everyone else while maintaining outrageously high test scores… quickly earned him a lot of ‘friends’ seeking his advice. Ray has personally conducted numerous studies to develop an intense, focused, and  results oriented program for college students. With the success of that program, Ray set his sights on helping younger students in Junior High, High School, and those just entering University. The end result is a program that will help any student – especially YOU – learn more, study less, and earn consistently high grades.  www.rayhollister.net

BARRY LEWIS GREEN SAYS

December has that notion of “gift giving” associated with it; whether Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever celebration one might engage this time of year.  I certainly see the diversity of friendship, talent and perspective of The CAST™ as a gift, for me… and I truly hope you.  My band, Elevation, too.  Still, here, I share some thoughts around discerning our inner gifts… thoughts I think important for students, teachers and anyone who sees life as the possibility of learning and growth.

Barry Lewis Green is ultimately a vocalist, strength coach and educator. His work is about voicing, exploring, identifying, practicing and mastering our strengths and building upon them through practical and powerful unity and resourcefulness.  His book Human Being Being Being Human speaks to that.  and that is why Barry is The Unity Guy™. EPIC Engage™ is an extension of The Unity Guy™. The Epic work is all about building strong, united and inspired cultures lead by character… at school, work and community; where everyone matters and contributes everyday. www.epicengage.com

CREATION CORNER

Jamie, each month, will offer a thought to ponder on Creativity; drawing on her longstanding expertise and experience in advancing same in others.  For this month…

JAMIE McCABE SAYS

Friends, I hope this does not come across as “selly”.  But… With the holidays fast approaching, you know the stress and worry that comes with it … of what to give others as a small token of  love or friendship. I know too, as I too struggle with what to get my mother in law or sisters for the holidays. I like to put a lot of thought into it so they know how much I care about them. I read an article the other day however, about giving “experiences” for the holidays. I thought, that is perfect! I love spending time with family and friends. What if your gifts too … were an experience. What would that look like? Well, that’s exactly what we do here at Clay Cafe! We give the gift of creativity! You will never have to give a receipt with your gift from us because you will never get the wrong color or the wrong size. How about the gift of presence? That’s right, presence! Put down your phone, get off that laptop or trv and bring someone on a date and give them the gift of being present. You can have just as much fun painting pottery with someone as you did watching that cute kitten video. The best gift I ever gave was a video I made for my Dad that began with my mom and him when they first started dating, right up into his three kids, grandkids…it was a life montage to music. He loves that video and we watch it at least 4 times a year. It was handmade with love. That’s what matters the most. So for this holiday season, give an experience, however you manifest it.  Here at the Clay Cafe, you can hand paint a gift or give the gift of painting the perfect memory with someone you love. You will have a masterpiece to remind you of your paint date that you can use and talk about for years to come. Either way, experience the Season!

JM2Jamie McCabe is all about creativity and connection. She is on a mission to bring people together through art and exploring their creative side at Clay Café Avalon. Jamie became an entrepreneur and opened the paint-your-own pottery studio in 2008 and has seen many memories painted there since then. She works with children and schools where she provides after school art programs. She believes we should color outside the lines more and embrace our inner artist. At Clay Café, it’s not about painting the perfect piece, it’s about painting the perfect memory.  www.claycafeavalon.ca

CRAZY COOL CORNER…

LIZ BURT SAYS

Hope you are well and enjoying the pre-Christmas excitement. It’s almost Christmas and, as the year draws to a close, I’m trying to take a little extra time to reflect and practice gratitude. I’ve been very fortunate this year to take a huge leap forward in my career, make a bunch of new friends, move into a cute cosy new home, and we even adopted the sweetest cuddliest cat.  Gratitude for these things is easy but on the bad days when things seem bleak, we really should try and remember all that we have to be grateful for. I think when we are so focused on progressing, achieving and improving our lives we can lose sight of how far we’ve come. The setbacks I experienced in the last few years gave me a far greater perspective, pushed me to work harder and made the triumphs of 2017 so much sweeter.  Gratitude is such an important element of a content and happy life.  So, as you celebrate the holiday season, take a little extra time to count your blessings. Think of those less fortunate and remember that even the struggles of today could one day be a gift in disguise!

Wayfarer 1.5: Just One Goal

These past few weeks, what I am calling my Warfarer Journey towards optimal health has granted me some lessons indeed.  This week, the most powerful yet.

I invite you to check this post from LinkedIn on A New Kind of Great Day.

At core, and amidst a bunch of things learned, the shift has been to me seeing my goals as being narrowed down to one ultimate goal; a vision of who I am… and as if in the right now.  Everything I do, moving forward is in support of that vision.  I make decisions in alignment with that vision.   I get to define Barry and I ask myself each day, “what would Barry do?.

More specifically, I have only one real goal. To be that guy. Then, on a daily day tight compartment basis, I now ponder a new version of GREAT.

  • GET … based on who you are and what you do, what do you need to GET done today.
  • RELEVANCE… how does that powerfully relate and have resonance for your one goal of BEING and DOING? This one is a fixed point, really. You are always relating your “get” to your natural BEING and DOING.
  • EXECUTE… what actions do you need to take on to go get it today?
  • ASSESS… on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being DONE), at the end of the day, measure your getting it done; and be prepared to reset.
  • TIMEFRAME… this is another fixed point… today… 24 hours. That is your time frame; those day tight compartments.

This speaks to me of Simplicity.  I am no longer juggling what I perceive as multiple goals in various arenas of my life.  Those multiple goal concepts served me well overall with a health say 75-80% completion rate I am estimating.  But there are significant gaps.  My road to health is really now about daily actions in terms of the Barry I envision.  What would Barry do becomes a daily question of guidance, using the GREAT action model.

As to my weight loss, I am 46 pounds down, plateauing a tad… but I am getting there.  I no longer have arbitrary goals of outcome, but daily goals of task and effort… that support my true goal.  I am 46 pounds down, and I am doing the daily action that will inevitably witness the results.  And I am feeling focused.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Joe Dimaggio, the epitome of ‘coolness’ in the 30’s and 40’s; not only a professional baseball player and Yankee slugger (no less), but married to Marilyn Monroe! Holy moly, can you have a higher profile career and relationship built into one package? It was an era that saw movie stars and sports figures become ‘larger-than-life’ and evolve into heroes of the ‘super’ kind. There were fewer of them (as compared to this day in age) and their names were synonymous with greatness during a time when people needed escape and a reason to dream.

One of Joe’s famous (and most mortal) quotes often sticks with me and can be a mantra for any leader who seeks excellence while maintaining a deep sense of humility – “I played my best everyday; You never know when someone may be seeing you for the first time.” This is a message that, as educators, we can entrench within our students as they approach the challenges of each day, build the skill set necessary for post-secondary options, and enter the unforgiving workforce. It can also become the foundation and standard for our own professional practice.  To read more on Joe and this thought, check out the Leaducator Experience™ for November 2017.

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS

Whose Opinion Matters?  This may ruffle some feathers – especially if you’re under 35 – but it is 100% accurate and necessary. When you are in the classroom, whether you are 14 or 41, there is a disturbing trend that seems to be emerging among students that is sadly working against their ability to learn effectively. That trend is the concept that the student’s opinion is paramount when considering what grade they have earned. The two key concepts here are “Student’s Opinion” and “Earned”. When it comes time to record the grade that a student will receive (for ANY class, assignment, paper, etc), the MOST EFFECTIVE WAY to help a student genuinely learn and grow is to give them what they EARNED. For this purpose, it is important to realize that in this moment, the only opinion that *should* matter for assigning a grade is the TEACHER! This is especially important in younger grades, specifically early education thru Junior High School. If you will take it to heart that a Teacher’s mission is to HELP you grow, HELP you learn, and HELP you succeed, then it should stand to reason that the teacher’s opinion is the only opinion that matters when it comes to your grades. With this in mind, if you will simply take the time to ASK your teacher what you can do to improve and/or to be even more successful in their class, I promise, you WILL get an answer! And if you genuinely LISTEN to what they say, AND put into practice, you will find that you not only reap the rewards of better grades, but you will also reap the rewards of better learning, better growth, and more success in the classroom – and life.

I share some thoughts around defining moments.  Remembrance Day is a day of honor on November 11 in Canada.  I also think Remembrance is something powerful for each of us; if we but focus on the constructive learnings.  When we do, we build a track record of personal and healthy confidence.  Indeed, here is a post from another 57 year young person on such reflection and worth a read.  And here is a post on doing just that for identifying your strengths.   I believe and contend that Remembrance is a powerful teacher.  When we look back at challenges and see them as defining moments… they can be the most powerful and effective of teachers.  When we help others… our students and colleagues and friends… to remember their defining moments, we help build character and confidence and capacity.  This is leadership.

Clay Cafe’s Creative tip for November is how affective art can be as a source of therapy and relaxation. Life can be stressful and busy but when you take the time to ART, it is relaxing and fun. It allows you to just focus on the task at hand and nothing else. Art helps us communicate in a different language. Self expression! It’s also a great way to communicate and connect with those that paint memories with us. Believe it or not… it also helps with critical thinking skills as you concentrate on a vision, color options and design elements.   They say that a picture is worth a 1,000 words….we often times communicate through our painting and work of art with colors and designs that we “feel” would be great for our masterpiece. Grow as a person and an artist; drop by to Paint today!

LIZ BURT SAYS

One thing that I think readers of the broadCAST™ should always remember is that “you will obtain your goal if you maintain your course”. This life lesson came to me a long time ago, on a fortune inside a fortune cookie of all places, but it is the one piece of wisdom that I try and remember daily. It reminds me that it basically comes down to consistency and sustained effort if you want to achieve anything.

Sometimes we can be working towards something that just feels impossible, and the road to the finish line seems way too far away. That’s when I try to remember that I just need to focus on the tasks at hand and eventually I will get to where I want to be. We often give up on things we want in life when it becomes difficult and we get discouraged by small setbacks. But whether your goal is to write a book, loose 100lb or go back to school, don’t focus on, “holy crap that’s going to be a lot of work” and give up. Instead, just focus on creating sustainable daily habits that will move you closer to your goal, day by day. Make a commitment to yourself to write one page a day, switch one unhealthy meal for a salad a day, or sign up for one course each semester. And even if you fall off track, don’t beat yourself up, just get right back at it. Sometimes life throws us curve balls and we have to roll with the punches. We might have to readjust, re-strategize and refocus, but, small steps in the right direction are better than none.

So, fall in love with the process, create good habits and be proud of yourself sticking with them. When you feel unmotivated and you want to quit, just remember, through consistency and determination, you will get where you want to go.

Petty Decisions

Earlier this evening, there was this news.  In immediate reaction and response, I posted on Facebook, the following:  Wow, are you kidding me? LIVE your life. Live YOUR life. Live your LIFE. Somehow. Fly Mr. Petty fly.

Then, some hours later, there was this… an update.

As we collectively await word, some things occur to me.

First, I sincerely honor the attention to craft that Tom Petty has brought to his music.  He is a musician in the best sense of the word.  Specifically, I posted on LinkedIn this week… the following post on Creativity, Choice and Decision.  Within that posting, I suggested that:

The courage to decide… confidence in one’s choices… this does not imply perfection or arrogance. Courage and Confidence here implies that we will try and that we know we will learn and grow, regardless of initial success or not. Discerning and being willing to act in the moment does not imply you know what will happen. It implies that you trust you can respond and learn from whatever outcome. There is true Confidence… not simply bravado. We run with our decisions, knowing we can change direction in our running… if need be.

All of this is to suggest that Decisiveness is a strength of character needed to live a life of integrity; true to one’s best self.  Having never met Tom Petty, I cannot say for sure… but, it seems to me he has made his choices… real and authentic.  Like John Mellencamp, he never wanted to be a pop singer.  If you want to be one great; but that was not his choice.  His music, was his to choose.  He was free to choose; and he chose.

So, with this in mind and heart, the news of Tom Petty speaks to me of both the potential “loss” of an artist that impacted millions and the reality that we only have control over our choices in life and profession… not in how long we enjoy both.

Then… what can we learn, in honor?

What are the decisions you need to make for true alignment and integrity?  What decisions require your courage right now?  What decisions will bring you the most confidence in their making? With discernment and deepest truths in mind, what decisions require your action?  It is time.

As an educator or leader; how can you advance the conversation with your students and teams and communities… to get to making the decisions that count?  Can you offer up examples of people who have chosen the courageous decisions… people with whom your students, teams and communities can identify?  Can you facilitate great conversations about what those decisions took and the impacts they had on the lives of those who decided and those they affected?  It is time.  It is indeed and in deed… time.

I think Tom Petty has already lived a life true… to himself and his craft.  I believe this to be so.  Whatever our time, if we were to be so bold and courageous; there is life.

That is the strength of character that is Decisiveness.  Decisions… make them.  Take them.  indeed, it is how we learn to fly.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

And We’re Off

And a kind of new era begins.  Over this past Summer, we have sharpened the blades on the focus of our work.  With Fall approaching and as our website now begins, we lay claim that:

Great education is great leadership.  Great leadership is great education.  Epic Engage™ is a training and development company with a global vision of working with educators, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders to:

  • educate and lead with high character, strength and joyful excellence.
  • unite strong cultures of diversity and fully engaged purpose, talent and capacity.
  • inspire dynamic learning cultures of flourishing passion, creativity, growth and prosperity.

We changed our logo… to represent our spirit and mission in doing so.

There is something special and powerful about horses running together.  Movement, spirit, drive and passion… united.  We help move the needle on that.

We have launched the second edition of The Leaducator Expereience™.  We are about to launch our 400th LinkedIn blog post this week… with currently 4860 followers for our body of work on LI. Humbly appreciated. 🙂

EDUCATE. LEAD. UNITE. INSPIRE.

That is our focus.  It is what we look to share in our monthly broadCAST™ … and in Leader ToC™.  Our work is about moving forward together, stronger.  We contend that character educates, leads, unites and inspires.  That is the kind of leadership that we are all about…. and helping campuses, companies, communities and conferences get there.

COURAGE and FOCUS

This week, we offered a layered series of posts on Courage, Sacrifice and finding what we call your KAST and fierce focus.  We invite you to read and engage.  Finding your focus, demands Courage.  We have practiced it such this Summer; and continue to do so.

CHARACTER DAY

First, I invite you to view and listen here.  But, more so, we invite you to engage Character Day September 13, tomorrow as of this writing.  Engage in a conversation around character.  In my classes tomorrow, I intend to do just that.  Character is the soil from which great behaviour and action is born.  It unites, inspires and engages.  Tomorrow, I suggest:

  • have a conversation with students about their favourite fictional characters or favourite musical artists.  Have a dialogue on the strengths of character they admire in them.
  • have a conversation with a friend not simply of the woes of the world… but what strengths of character are needed to help address those woes.
  • have a dialogue at work on what strengths of character you most wish to be known for as an organization.
  • watch this video.
  • or this one.
  • or thiiiiiis one.
  • Maybe this one too.
  • Oh and this little ditty.
  • or these speeches of Aragorn or Neville or JFK.

Start the conversation around character.  It matters.  Going forward, that is our fierce focus; to advance character as the strength to educate, lead, unite and inspire.  We need it, locally and globally.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS

Simplicity has always inspired me. It has always amazed me when I hear someone take what is commonly believed to be a ‘difficult’ topic, and explain it simply and profoundly. Truthfully, I was first exposed to this as young boy sitting in the church pew with my parents. Listening to a preacher expound on Scriptural principles was perceived by many to be difficult for children to understand, but I was very lucky to have a preacher who believed we were ALL children of God, and he expertly crafted his sermons to be understandable, relatable, and practicable to all of us – even the children. Later in life, I became fascinated with Physics and Fluid Dynamics (don’t ask, I’m just weird that way). Most people would argue that Physics is difficult to understand. But take a few moments and listen to Neil deGrasse Tyson; you will be mesmerized AND you’ll learn something about Physics (Astrophysics specifically). I developed early on in my life a core belief that anything can be simplified – and therefore, understood. That one inspiration has led to a love of learning, a love of life, and a love of simplicity! So how can you apply this to your life? SIMPLE! (see what I did there). 🙂  Whatever goals you may have, it is highly likely that others have achieved what you aspire to do. And it is almost a certainty that among those who have achieved what you aspire to achieve is someone who can simplify the process for you in a way that you will understand, relate to, and be able to put into practice. May I be so bold as to suggest that there are contributors to this newsletter that may be able to do this for you even now?  🙂  Simply yours…

LIZ BURT SAYS

I think what I have been most inspired by in my career is simply hard work and effort. I have been lucky to meet a few unsung superstars in my career who really kick ass and work hard, and these people inspire me big time. They haven’t been CEOs or the flashy type of people who would ever draw attention to themselves. They have been regular hard-working women who I have worked side by side with, who just dedicate themselves and produce amazing work. They can accomplish an incredible amount of work in what seems to be a very short time and remain humble and never seek praise for it. They have really inspired me with their work ethic as well as their ability to make it look so easy! Inspiration from hard work and effort inspires me outside my career as well. I am inspired by athletes who dedicate themselves to their sport, push their bodies to the max and train for hours on end to be their best. I’m inspired by people who take their education to higher levels and by the entrepreneurs who hustle for years and turn their dreams into realities. I am inspired by the tireless, tenacious pursuit of being one’s best and that applies to many areas of life!

One thing that inspires me in my life and my work is creative problem solving… when a solution or an idea comes through us that presents a whole new level of possibility we never thought of before.  It’s deeply energizing when perceived road blocks dissolve into new door ways through an open mind.  I am also continually inspired by the people in my life who absolutely blow past fears and obstacles put in their path…  courage and perseverance is something I admire most.

TRENT LANGDON SAYS

Dodging the Cows, Memes & Quotes in the Social Media Tornado. Anyone who has spent any amount of time within the social media realm has experienced the tornado of historic quotes, touchy-feely messages, and deep thoughts that stream across your screen of choice. In a matter of seconds, your thought processes shift from appreciating the forward-thinking of Abraham Lincoln, to saving an endangered species, to stopping and enjoying a kitten sleeping in a mug.  Prior to utilizing social media, I very much valued stumbling upon that special quote or idea that grabbed my attention and motivated for days to come. Now with the search of one key word, your screen is flooded with a vast array of options for your perusing pleasure. I now find that my thoughts can often be scattered and fleeting with any amount of time spent online.  Thanks for sticking with me on this one… here is my line of thinking. 🙂 It is important to intentionally stabilize our thinking patterns as a way of controlling stress, ‘tornado thinking’, and preventing anxiety; an online presence can sometimes become invasive to your well-being.  In terms of your own personal mission statement, choose to hold true to those perspectives and ideas that represent your values. Your online footprint can become quite blurry with overuse of that ‘share’ button.

I have two videos to share on this… one shot live and this morning from Facebook Live and one You Tube video running through what inspires me… click on the red button for that one.  Bottom line, three things occur to me.  First, character inspires me.  Second, the wonderful people in this monthly blog inspire me with their work and commitment and lives.  Third, I humbly suggest that you take the time to inventory and get abundantly clear on what inspires you.  Having the ability to articulate that for yourself can get you through those tough slog days… and moving to better ones.

Consider It? I CAN

This week, we are exploring CONSIDERATION as a virtue… a strength of character of leadership at school, work, business and community.  Before we go further, CONSIDER THIS.

  • To think about the needs of others, thoughtful of feelings, speaking gently and tactfully… being a joybringer with thoughtful acts… this is Consideration.
  • BUT, it is also to make and hold our decisions with care and discernment, being thoughtful and mindful… considering all factors, and options.

In our work around character, leadership and getting results, we use an 8-step, 4-phase process called ICCCCCAN™

PHASE ONE.  Know Your Battleground.

  • Identify the ISSUE, at hand.  Get abundantly clear on what the problem actually is, as opposed to symptoms.  You are attempting resolution, not a band aid… so you need to know the real and core issue.
  • Determine the CAUSES that have brought you to this issue or situation.  Make a clear list of the factors that have brought this issue to bear.  Know thy enemy here implies knowing what caused the matter… helps you solve the matter.
  • Inventory the specific CONSEQUENCES, if you do nothing.  This is your motivation.  Be very descriptive in terms of what will happen if you do nothing to resolve the issue.  Get clear on the pain.  This is your leverage.

PHASE TWO.  Prepare Your Base Camp for Battle.

This phase is about knowing your realities.

  • Get clear on the CRITERIA for making any decisions.  What are your real world parameters in making decisions and taking action?  In other words, what would truly limit your capacity to respond… time, money, other?  Be truthful here, so that you identify legitimate and real criteria… and not simply excuses.
  • What is your COMMUNITY of support and resources available in addressing the issue?  Who has your back?  Who can you call on?  What resources are available going forward?

PHASE THREE:  Battle Cry!

This is the heart of your solution.  Character is fundamental to great responses.  Character leadership matters at the heart of any issue.

  • What is the CHARACTER demanded by the matter at hand?  What strengths of character are demanded to address the situation fully and effectively?  Character is the basis of great and consistent and needed action?  Get clear on the virtues you need bring to the table?

PHASE FOUR: Engage the Fight!!!

Now, and action!

  • What are the ACTIONS and behaviours to be manifested and demonstrated, born of the character to be practiced in making a difference?  Make your detailed action plan.
  • What is your first step, NOW?  Be specific.

These 8 steps in 4 phases demand diligence, discernment and decisiveness.  So, maybe you might consider this process.  It is one wholly characterized by CONSIDERATION.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Leader ToC with Trent Langdon

This month, with our seventh in the series of Leader ToC™ Blog Posts for 2017, we connect with a friend and colleague in education, Trent Langdon.  With his background and passion, I am thrilled to have him join the conversation around leadership and character at Leader ToC™.

That being said, and before we head into that conversation, Leader ToC™ (Thoughts on Character) itself is our monthly series engaging leaders around the world on character, leadership and more.  Before we get started this month, here are:

… if you wish to catch up; there is your baker’s dozen. 🙂

And, we do indeed encourage the reads.  This is Issue 13, with more to come.  We are thankful, and look forward to continuing the learning journey; and having you with us.  We hope you engage and enjoy.

INTRODUCING Trent Langdon

Trent Langdon is all about building legacy through character education and social-emotional development. He is a junior high school counselor for nearly 700 adolescents and is dedicated to serving his students, their families, and communities. In addition, Trent works on behalf of his colleagues to build identity, protect professional roles, and to give teachers ‘a voice’; recently elected as Vice-President of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA) for the 2017-2019 term of office. And now, on to …

Engage the Leader ToC™

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Hey Trent; glad to have you on board with this month’s Leader ToC™.  We typically start with the big question… “Who are you and what is it you do?”

Trent Langdon

Glad to be here Barry.  Well, I am an educator / school counselor, and an advocate for teachers, public education, human rights, and mental health.  In addition to my daily experiences as a teacher, I have contributed to the governance and leadership of my professional affiliations since the start of my career.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

That is no small order and track record; so you are working with those you serve in students and teachers and the profession of teaching alike.  With that in mind, for whom do you do this work best? In other words, who is your best audience?

Trent Langdon

I work directly for my students, families, and teacher colleagues within the education system… however I fundamentally champion character development, actions of integrity, and humanistic leadership (through the work of Epic Engage™ and my own social media communications).

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Tell us a little more about that.  How do you best serve them in doing so? In other words, how do you offer your services?

Trent Langdon

When a group or an individual is interested in connecting to explore any of the themes / areas mentioned above, I work directly with them (either in person or online) to create an action plan that addresses their specific needs (whether it be group work, a speaking engagement, etc.); supports and services are then delivered with a personal approach.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

So you do personalized programming around your body of work and audience.  Excellent.  Based on your work over the years… in these times, what are the challenges and opportunities of leadership… from your perspective and experience?

Trent Langdon

Here is a thought that encompasses a challenge and an opportunity.  A challenge is maintaining that ‘human’, personal component as part of daily interactions.  The opportunity is to maintain that ‘traditional’ human approach by ensuring time is set aside to send that ‘store-bought’ card of condolence, ensure that you meet for coffee at least once per week with a friend / colleague, or send a hand-written message of thanks to a person that has inspired you in some capacity.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

I like that… the challenge and opportunity as two sides to the coin, so to speak.  So, in the face of that, when considering the strengths of leadership as they might relate to character… what virtues do you consider to be paramount as strengths and why do you believe them vital?

Trent Langdon

Hands-down, my personal ‘go-to’ virtues are INTEGRITY, HUMANITY, & THANKFULNESS. These three give me an opportunity to look inward (integrity), outward (humanity), and simply acknowledge (thankfulness) the Source / God / Creator of all things good.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Love it.  Given that, what is one piece of advice you might have for our readership on developing leadership and strength of character in these times?

Trent Langdon

Investigate those virtues that are your foundation; those virtues that guide and strengthen your personal and professional efforts.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

I hear you.  That is core, in my opinion.  To thine own self be true.  And you do work ultimately around that.  So, how can someone connect with you for more information on your work?

Trent Langdon

Well, you can email me directly at trent@epicengage.com and connect with my Blog or on LinkedIn and Twitter (@TrentLangdonNL ).

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Trent, that is it… for now.  🙂  I really appreciate the time… and your work my friend.  Thanks for joining us on Leader ToC™.

Trent Langdon

Been a pleasure Barry.  Thanks for the opportunity.

Leader ToC™ out…

Folks, check out Trent; I encourage you.  You will be glad you did.

And, yes indeed, we continue on.  Continuing through 2017, around the third or final Friday of each month… we will engage and explore with experts and leaders around the globe.  We invite you to join us.

Until next month…

Peace, passion and prosperity.

MaD Commitment

Earlier this week, we posted on Commit and Depart; initially exploring Commitment, Detachment and Initiative and the process of letting go to move forward.

Then, we explored Motivation and Discipline as they might connect with Commitment… particularly with my personal road back to health.  I am intent on getting back to my own optimal strength and health.

Commitment to something important requires us to detach or depart from something less important.  We do not break habits; we change them.  That requires the virtue of Sacrifice which is to give up something important for something more important.

In doing so, we must needs find our best motivation.. driven by Enthusiasm, Purposefulness and Determination … and reinforced by Discipline.  In other words, Commitment requires us to depart from old ways, in favor of new ones.  We best do that by our motivation and our practice of Discipline.

We invite you to think about an important goal you might have, personally or professionally.  Here is a process we might suggest.

  • Get very specific as to what you are committing to achieving.
  • Get clear on what you must release to do so.
  • Now, get abundantly clear on your motivation.  Find your enthusiasm for the goal by exploring the absolute and real relevance it has for you.  Get real on it.  Get particularly clear on the purpose of the goal; why it is important.  Ask yourself how you will show Determination in making it happen.  These are the key elements of true motivation.
  • Then determine how you will practice Discipline in those moments of doubt or distraction or even despair.

Commit, release and go MaD.  Try that out and see where it takes you at school, work, business and community.  We think it might be interesting.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Clean to Lean

The lean business model is all about simplicity and focus; and Cleanliness is the virtue.  Earlier this week, we shared on Clean Leadership… taking the first steps to examine this often misunderstood virtue or strength of character.

In it, we suggested:

Simplicity and the lean business model are its results.

It demands of us the time and energy and priority to inventory all that is occupying our school, work and community life.  It is about examining the BIG ROCKS as Stephen Covey referenced.  So, the simple question around getting clean and lean is:

What are your big rocks?

Now, I personally invite you to watch this video on A Clean Thought.  Then, schedule in some dedicated and devoted time to make a list of all the rocks in your life, big and small.  Be thorough.  I mean thorough; diligently so.  Leave no stone unturned.  Once you have done so, create four columns:

COLUMN 1: DEEPLY WANT TO

These are the boulders. This column is for those rocks in your life that you deeply and passionately have affinity and need for in living a fulfilling life, on your terms.

COLUMN 2: HAVE TO

These are the stones.  This column is for those rocks that may not be associated with passion, but they are needed… to live, period.

COLUMN 3: SHOULD DO

These are the pebbles.  This column is dedicated to those rocks in your life that are wish list and desirable but not cravings or truly needed.  They are more born of a sense of obligation. if anything.

COLUMN 4: GET AROUND TO

This column is for the sand in Dr. Covey’s metaphor.  These are the things that ultimately hold no great importance… but if you have time, yeah you would do them.  They are the noise and distractions.

Go through your list and mark a red mark in the appropriate column for each item… based on your ideal life.  THEN, go through the list again, and mark in black mark what is your reality, at this time.  Now, you have something truly to reconcile.

  • What sand is now big rock for you?
  • What big rocks need to be more like sand?

The goal is to get clear and clean up the alignment of your life.  Maybe some sand needs to become rock.  Maybe some rock needs to be sand.  Either way, in doing so, you are practicing Cleanliness. You are refreshing and cleaning your life.  You are demonstrating respect and honor.  You are understanding garbage in, garbage out even more powerfully.  You are cleansing yourself of habits that no longer serve you, or maybe never did.

To get lean, we need to clean.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
