The Study of Character Leadership, Part 4

Public performance requires trust and trustworthiness alike; in our leadership, colleagues, clients and all constituents.  In our last post on the study of character leadership, and throughout the first three posts indeed… we sing-300x200explored building trustworthiness as a leader.  We suggested looking at a trustworthiness plan and mission statement.  We recommend a review of those posts now.  Yes, indeed, we do.

But, we also asked you to answer and/or address the following…

  • What is the clear and certain return on investment of building character in your school, workplace, business or community?  Make a grocery list of the tangible reasons for advancing character as foundation to your culture. 
  • How would it impact sales, revenues, effectiveness, efficiencies, excellence, academics, quality, trustworthiness and more amongst your colleagues, classrooms, clients and all constituents.

This gets us leverage on the WHY.  What exactly is the ROI on character, trust and trustworthiness as leaders at school, work and community?  Getting clear on this is crucial or we simply pay and play lip service; a waste of time and resources for everyone.  The WHY is our motivation and meaning.

FOUR STRATEGIES

But, what about our methods for implementing cultures that build trust and trustworthiness in powerful 101 on Blackand equal measure?  Here now, we introduce four overarching strategies on the HOW of building such leadership and culture.

  • LEARN THE LANGUAGE.  In our engagement with one another as part of the team in a school, youth center or college… workplace or community… the language of the virtues is nuanced and layered.  We strongly suggest learning the language of the virtues that build trust.  Identify what virtues build it.  Move beyond presumptive understandings and dig deeper; ever deeper.  Choose to study them and understand them.  Get to know them and their nuances.  Master their understanding.
  • ENCOURAGE TEACHABLE MOMENTS.  Build a learning culture that practices those necessary, and now more understood, virtues for building trust and trustworthiness.  Build a culture that encourages learning from their application.  This is vital.  Innovation in the application of character is as relevant as it is with technology.  Apply as you go.  Measure as you go.  Learn as you go.
  • GET CLEAR on BOUNDARIES.  Boundaries based on respect and restorative justice create a climate of clarity in our workplaces, schools and communities; and they provide real identity.  Set your best guidelines around how you will ensure the building of trust and trustworthiness.  Move beyond conduct and explore what will be your code of character for building such?
  • CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT.  We sustain our focus by keeping our eyes on the prize and honoring that every step of the way.  Encourage and celebrate the spirit of trust and trustworthiness.  Find ways to honor it daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.

These four strategies can serve as powerful vehicles for building trustworthy leaders and cultures at school, work and community… cultures that are worthy of the trust of all stakeholders.  Trustworthiness is built on character and getting clear on the requisites of character goes a very long way in establishing that worthiness.  That is one powerful commodity.

Chamber Minutes: August 2016

Welcome. 

This is the new Chamber Minutes™; a monthly blog post in service to the Mount Pearl Paradise Chamber of Commerce and its membership, through its Board and newsletter.  Here, monthly, we will logotake a few minutes to consider a thought that might help build greater strength, unity and resourcefulness in the face of challenges and opportunities alike.  As a proud and fairly new member of the Chamber, Epic Engage™, is all about strength, unity and resourcefulness and how to get there.  We look forward to exploring same, in service to you… our fellow members.

But First

Here is the very first “issue” posted back on May 30, 2016, introducing the Chamber itself and its services.  We recommend it as a good read for members and those interested alike.

This Month

As you may have already noticed in the Chamber newsletter itself, things are happening in our business community… the Mount Pearl Litter Initiative, Facebook Hosting of a Free Event on August 12th, and Chamber Golf Registration.  It is a cool and busy month indeed.

That being said, for here and for this month, we thought to explore strength, unity, resourcefulness and resilience by briefly examining one role character plays in their development.  Yes, character.  At Epic Engage™, we contend that “In times of prosperity and adversity alike, strength of character and unity lead to resourcefulness and what we call joyful excellence.”  Character is about going deeper than behaviour.  Consistent and constructive behaviour results from character.  It gets things right; and done.  It is our best branding.  When we clearly identify, lay claim to and live the character of our work and service, our clients and all constituents come to see us as consistent and trustworthy… and loyalty is seeded, beyond points cards.

Our Best Advantage

Joe Calloway writes and speaks to the idea that consistency of excellence in our experience with our customers is our best competitive advantage.  We wholeheartedly concur.  When our customers, colleagues and all who do business with us know what to expect in terms of excellence, we build a reputation unlike any other.  We become known for what we do and how well we do it.  We become known for the experience and state of being that is that experience.

Ultimately, people buy states of being.  Whatever is sold or delivered essentially delivers on a state of being.  In marketing, we call it the core product.  We are buying a feeling that comes from the purchase.  Character is the most foundational source for defining states of being.  When we clearly know that which we are delivering, we can more powerfully and consistently deliver on it, internally and externally.

Practice Makes Progress

So, with that in mind, we invite you to engage this short video and the exercise it entails… for this month.  Then, consider this poster of 101 strengths or states of being.  If you wish one sent to you, contact us directly.101 on Black

Identify three character strengths you wish, desire and intend your work and service to be about.  Get clear on these three strengths as states of being.  Make sure they are what you most want your customers, clients, colleagues and all constituents to experience; for this is your best and deepest branding.  Choose three to focus on.  Focus is important.

“So long as the thoughts of an individual are scattered he will achieve no results, but if his thinking be concentrated on a single point wonderful will be the fruits thereof.”

Then, get clear on the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly practices that will manifest and drive home these strengths for all who engage you.  Doing so will provide you with a powerful litmus test for future decisions; measuring them against this core experience you have intended.  It will also effectively assist you with recruitment, selection, training and development… making sure that you find, keep and develop a team that consistently delivers on the experience.

The Bottom Line

Character is not fluff.  It is strength.  It is strength of service and excellence.  We suggest that you get clear on what your team, branch, division, company or organization want to deliver on, at core.  What is the tangible, palpable state of being for which you want to be absolutely and consistently known?  Identify it, claim it, live it and watch the results in traction and loyalty.

The Study of Character Leadership, Part 3

Of late, we have been diving into some work put out by the Ivey Business Journal.  In our last post, we virtueslooked at an element of that work that questioned the strengths of leaders with respect to:

Do they have the character to be a good leader and strive to be an even better one?  Do they have the values, traits and virtues that others – shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators and the broader society within which they operate – will use to determine if they are good leaders?”

And we suggested setting a personal Trustworthiness Mission Statement,  looking at an example:

I serve my colleagues, customers, clients and all constituents by earning their trust every day through:

  • Honesty, honor and timeliness in my responses
  • Excellence and reliability in the quality of my work
  • Joyfulness and enjoyment in conducting our business.

We finished by saying…, Most importantly, use language that you know you are prepared and committed to honoring every day.  Every Day.  EVERY. DAY.  Then set some clear and measurable actions that you will take daily to make it so.  Trustworthiness is indeed the “means of attracting confirmation and prosperity”. 

BUT WHY?

In the original article, it addressed why this even matters.  To quote the piece…

In any bookstore you will find dozens of books on leadership style, far fewer on leadership competencies, and fewer still that address leadership character.  For some reason we have lost sight of character. Perhaps this is because our educational system and organizations are so competency focused; perhaps because we just don’t know what to think about character; perhaps because character seems such an old-fashioned word; perhaps because we are reluctant to discuss examples of poor character with our colleagues in the workplace, or because we believe we cannot assess character objectively.

Yet character is such a central, important element of leadership — particularly for the kind of cross-enterprise leadership that is essential in complex, global business organizations — which it should not and cannot be ignored.  Character fundamentally shapes how we engage the world around us, what we notice, what we reinforce, who we engage in conversation, what we value, what we choose to act on, how we decide…and the list goes on.

Our own research on the failures of leadership points to issues around character as a central theme[3].  Nowhere was this more obvious than in the financial crisis of 2008 – 2009, in which boldness or instant gratification triumphed over temperance.  People who knew that bad risks were being taken did not have the courage and/or confidence to speak up, and people without integrity sold mortgages to those who could not pay them.  They then bundled these mortgages into securities that were fraudulent and sold to others.  People with large egos, lacking in humility, oblivious to the harm they may have been be doing to others or the societies in which they operated, became very rich at the expense of millions who were the victims of the financial crisis and subsequent recession.  Yet, to this day, these same people seem unable or unwilling to accept any degree of responsibility for their actions.  Leaders of large, global companies knew about these types of practices yet did nothing to stop them.  Still others were unable to create the honest, transparent corporate culture that would enable them to be in touch with what was happening deep down in the organization.  All these behaviors and activities were, essentially, failings of character.

When Dale Carnegie first researched for his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living in the first half of the 20th Century, the story goes that he went to the New York City Public Library and found no books on worry, but plenty on worms.  We are almost at that place with character.  Almost.  There is growing attention to the topic but in many ways… it still appears adjunct in nature.

We, at Epic Engage™, hold that character is at the heart of great strategy, capacity and creativity.   We contend that “in times of prosperity and adversity alike, strength of character and unity lead to resourcefulness”.  We contend that character is about going deeper than behaviour.  Character is foundational.  It builds advanced capacity and, in turn, creativity.

So, here is our next bit of homework.

The Study of Character Leadership, Part 2

Last week, we introduced The Study of Character Leadership, Part 1.  We invite you to refresh here andthe-epic-leader now.  Then upon doing so, let’s dig in some more.

In the Ivey School post referenced, in Part 1, it was noted:

“In assessing leaders at any level in an organization, we must always ask three questions:

  • Do they have the competencies to be a leader?  Do they have the knowledge, the understanding of key concepts, facts, and relationships that they need to do the job effectively?
  • Do they have the commitment to be a leader?  Yes, they aspire to be a leader, but are they prepared to do the hard work of leadership, engage with others in fulfilling the organizational mission, achieve the vision and deliver on the goals?
  • Do they have the character to be a good leader and strive to be an even better one?  Do they have the values, traits and virtues that others – shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators and the broader society within which they operate – will use to determine if they are good leaders?”

This third element or question conjures up a memory of a sage piece of advice given to me my one Peter Johnson in 1997.  On a trip to New York to meet senior management with Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc. on July 1, 1997, I was picked up at the hotel by Peter.  It was my first time meeting him, and he extended his hand to greet.  Upon doing so he said, “Can I give you a piece of advice?”  I, in turn, said “Absolutely”.  Then, he said it…

“People like doing business with people they like doing business with.”

It struck me.  It reminded me of growing up amidst the work of my father in the construction industry.  It reminded me of my own body of work and experience up to that point… and now since; the lessons learned.  The wisdom was and is palpable; and it speaks to the third element above.

Do they have the character to be a good leader and strive to be an even better one?  Do they have the values, traits and virtues that others – shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators and the broader society within which they operate – will use to determine if they are good leaders?”

In pondering the value of character, consider that “trustworthiness is the chief means of attracting capacitiesconfirmation and prosperity”.  Then consider how you build that.  Do you have the character to be a good leader and strive to be an even better one?  Do you have the values, traits and virtues that others – shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators and the broader society within which they operate – will use to determine if you are a good leader?  Indeed, do you practice the strengths of character that will invoke Peter’s wisdom?

Then, consider variations on the questions from the last post.

  • On a scale of 1-5, how important is character leadership in building trustworthiness?
  • On a scale of 1-5, where are you with this right now?
  • What would advance the needle on the previous question?
  • What are 3 practices you could engage to build it?
  • What would be the impact of doing so?

Set a Trustworthiness Plan in Place. 

In getting where you need and desire to go with this. how would responsibility and reliability factor in to the equation?  What about consistency of experience and excellence?  Where would fun and enjoyment play a part?  Think about your shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators and the broader society.  Indeed, create a personal Trustworthiness Mission Statement.

I serve (my colleagues, customers, clients and constituents) by earning their trust every day through (and name three ways you do that).

For example…

I serve my colleagues, customers, clients and all constituents by earning their trust every day through:

  • Honesty, honor and timeliness in my responses
  • Excellence and reliability in the quality of my work
  • Joyfulness and enjoyment in conducting our business.

Most importantly, use language that you know you are prepared and committed to honoring every day.  Every Day.  EVERY. DAY.  Then set some clear and measurable actions that you will take daily to make it so.  Trustworthiness is indeed the “means of attracting confirmation and prosperity”.

The Spectrum of Leadership

Introversion and extroversion are a spectrum but, in my humble but observant opinion, we have too long focused on the extroversion end of that spectrum.  Here are two great sources to stimulate thought and discussion… a brief article from You Inc. … and this great TED Talk.

Virtues on BlackWhich is better in leadership? I contend we need both and (indeed) gradients throughout the spectrum.  So, questions.

  • What virtues do you associate with introversion?
  • What virtues do you associate with extroversion?
  • How are they related to leadership?
  • How can we encourage them in others, youth and adult alike… at school, work or beyond?

A Study of Character Leadership, Part 1

Ivey Business Journal offered this great article on Character Leadership.  First and above all else, we invite you to have a good read.  There is quite a bit to munch on here.capacities

Related to your area of expertise and way you serve, what is one common challenge that you find people facing that needs addressing sooner rather than later?

LAURIE PINHORN SAYS…

One of the first things I help my clients understand is the emotional and psychological process of making behavior change. I want people to understand that setbacks are part of their learning process. We are experts at seeing our struggles and focusing on our deficits. To keep moving forward in a positive direction, we need to stay focused on the positive things we are doing. It is necessary to retrain our brain to see the positives and then give ourselves the credit for all of our successes, no matter how small.  We all have low motivation days and that doesn’t mean that we are losing our capacity for health improvements. It just means that some days are easier than others. Days like this teach us that we can Lauriepush through. Then the next day you need to push yourself you will have the evidence that you can do this! Each time you push through you are victorious!  The internal work such as adjusting all or nothing thoughts, reducing anxiety, taking time for mindfulness activities and mindset work are important parts of our success stories. It takes time to do this work and people are often just looking for numbers to move on the scale or fitting into a smaller pants size. The work-in is often more important than the work-out and it lays down the foundation for long term health and wellness.

Laurie Pinhorn is all about nutrition and whole health.  She is a registered social worker, holistic and therapeutic nutritionist, an Orthomolecular Health Practitioner and a member of The Academy of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists (ANN). RAY HOLLISTER SAYS…

What a fantastic question! And the answer is the same for both areas I serve. Self-Absorption is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. When students are too self-absorbed, they tend to fall into the ‘blame game’ regarding failure, difficulties, challenges, and rules. If something doesn’t go the way they want, blame is immediately assessed, and rarely – if ever – does the blame fall on them! Self-absorption gives them false certainty of their innocence; this invariably leads to ‘victim-hood’. Interestingly, the same can be said for those going through traumatic experiences. In this case, self-absorption is a spiraling whirlwind of ‘why me?’ and deep introspection where blame is foisted Ray-300x294upon their shoulders alone. This leads many to simply shut down or break down under the strain of the vicious loop of reliving the trauma and trying to cope with what it all means.  Self-Absorption is not necessarily selfishness, though it can be in many circumstances. Self-Absorbed individuals tend to be intently focused on themselves – what they want, what they need, what is fair to them, how they will benefit, how they will suffer, etc. By addressing this natural tendency early on, it becomes easier for students to recognize that to be successful AND happy, they’ll need to recognize that their individual wants, desires, and ‘rules’ are NOT the driving force of their education. Only their RESULTS are the due to their personal efforts. Likewise, with those going through traumatic experiences, Resiliency becomes a driving factor; recognizing that remaining mired in self-blame, shock, or denial will only prolong suffering, whereas accepting the support of others, moving forward, and overcoming are due to personal choice and effort.  Though it is often unpleasant, changing the characteristic of self-absorbed to self-aware, can make HUGE strides in a more successful and enjoyable educational experience. And though it is often bitter sweet, changing the characteristic of self-absorbed to self-acceptance can turn a broken individual into beacon of light and hope for everyone else.  What state are you in today?

TRENT LANGDON SAYS…

I often hear families and individuals comment on the pace of life, the ‘rat race’, and the impossibility of the multiple roles we are expected to fill (that of employee, parent, spouse, care-giver, volunteer,…). Significant research has gone into the impacts of the roles we assume (and those we are forced into) as quotewell as the benefits of having a strong relationship with ‘yourself’. The concepts of ‘work-life balance’ and ‘self-care’ have become cliché in many respects but do we truly know and reward our personal selves accordingly?  Creating therapeutic ‘alone time’ with your thoughts, emotions, and feelings, and intentionally creating opportunities for self-reflection, renewal, and re-generation can be extremely cathartic. It can simply mean, a dedicated hour for yourself at the local book store, a private walk along your favorite beach, or playing your music, when and where you want…     It’s about intentionality and ensuring these events make it into your schedule.  I strongly believe that an investment in effective personal time can reduce the shock of losing love ones, maintain strong mental health, and truly enable you to enjoy what it means to be ‘you’.  After all, you have so many people competing for your time, what’s one more?

I help entrepreneurs and business professionals become confident, engaging and effective speakers.  The most common challenge I experience with my clients is that they are looking for a quick fix to their speaking anxieties. You don’t learn to become an effective speaker by simply listening to me speak.  I provide insights, feedback and coaching to help my clients create their own unique speaking style. I help them recognize their strengths and work with them to develop strategies to address areas that need improvement. It is up to the client to apply this information. I can’t do it for them. He/she has to take advantage of every opportunity to speak and apply the guidance I provided.  Over and over again I see the person with true commitment achieving the most success on their journey to manage their speaking anxiety. They are committed to themselves and the process.  There is no ‘silver bullet’ solution or ‘magic pill’. It all comes down to how committed the client is. That ultimately determines their level of success. If you don’t have the commitment that you will do what is necessary then you are not ready to take on the challenge of managing your speaking anxiety.

Related to my area of expertise and the way I serve, what is one common challenge that I find people facing that needs addressing sooner rather than later?  Everything everyone else said lol.  Truth.  Still there is something screaming out to me in a whisper.  Focus.  We are constantly running around Focuschasing obligations, responsibilities and dreams.  We need to be thoroughly reminded that multi-tasking is ultimately both a myth and a way to distract us from what is truly important.  Being strategically focused, with our eyes on the prize and our commitment in hand does not mean we cannot have fun.  We can and must, along the way. The C6 Career Search

As a business college educator, human resource guy, employer and Master Facilitator with The Virtues Project™, I find this to be a great and timely post for job hunters and career seekers.  I invite you to engage and enjoy the read.  That being said, it speaks to me of the real world importance of six strengths of character… all, interestingly enough, beginning with the letter C.

Acting with certainty is the power of clarity… knowing what you want and intend and having that kind of fierce focus…. that requires you to get honest and truthful about what you want and where you can best serve.  Take a weekend (your own personal retreat with you) to, with singular focus, reflect truthfully about what you really want.  Spreading yourself thin by trying to be something for everyone will, too often, get you nothing but despair and frustration.  Fierce focus grounded in certitude will be evident to both you and those you engage.

Acting with confidence is the power of faith… knowing that you will get there, somehow, someway… the self assurance of the effort.  Confidence is a faith in both yourself and the world you engage.  It shows and shines.  Practice it.  Act it through your smile, your wholehearted breathing, and your posture.  As you act with confidence, you show it clearly.

Acting with courage is the power of the action… not being held back by doubt and fear in taking that action.   That requires a momentary commitment… to just do it.  Pick up the phone, start the conversation…

Acting with caring is the art of the search…. an intense interest and commitment to both the search and those you meet along the way.  As Dale Carnegie said… become genuinely interested in others.  Genuine interest shows openness and curiosity and engagement.  That starts with caring… not only about your own hunt… but those you engage in it.

Acting with creativity is the art of being original and being noticed for it… the purposeful innovation in the search and presentation.  Being better at something is different.  Being original is different.  Find your difference.  Be a difference maker.

Acting with cooperation is engaging the process in partnership, as equals… you the seeker of fulfilling employment; the employer as seeker of an effective employee and contributor.  You share in the power of the consultation and decision.  Know it.  Live it.

My only suggestion this day is that you consider your strategy for job hunting or career seeking and/or changing with all six of these virtues in play.  Read the cards noted above and reflect on what actions do you need to take with them in mind and heart.  Draw upon resources like Richard Bolles’ What Color is Your Parachute? and the post referenced above… and more.  But, guide your strategy and effort with C6.

Go get it.

Imagine…

Greetings.  I invite you to consider and imagine the power of character.  It is neither theoretical nor naive to do so.  Examples abound.  In doing so, here are some thoughts to possibly consider.  In their totality, they might take an hour or so but are worth the time.  I think so; but even a scan is worth it.

In the spirit of truthfulness and transparency, I am a Baha’i, and I believe in this message… of Neil deGrasse Tyson and of The Universal House of Justice noted just below.

Baha i ViewAs a closing thought (for now anyway) on acceptance, beauty, creativity, detachment, excellence and humility as virtues, my own humble suggestion is that once we “get it”… once we understand that we are truly in this together and accept it fully, see the beauty in it, realize the creative capacity of it, learn to detach from old world views of us and them, and apply the excellence of the human spirit… wow.  One wonders (I  know I do) what could be our possibilities?   There is an inner and outer world of existence awaiting our exploration and realization; infinitely so.  It takes work, and character to do so.  It requires work to see ourselves differently.  It requires a passion for change; and an intent for growth, now.

So, consider…

Power of Character- AcceptancePower of Character- BeautyPower of Character- CreativityPower of Character- DetachmentPower of Character- ExcellencePower of Character- HumilityHow can you practice these six strengths of character in such a away to build a home, school, workplace, business or community that does get “it”; that understanding that we can and must move forward together, stronger?

For now, we are onwards to explore more on character and virtue; in real world terms.  It is my passion and my study, and I believe and contend that our most noble character will bring the kind of unity that results in peace, passion and prosperity at school home, work and community.  It is the message of all Sacred Teachers throughout history.  It is the message of the great visionaries of our times.  It is the message of Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek, and all those who see our future as anything but dark, sinister, boring or doomed.  Now, that can set the world on fire in most constructive of ways…. imagine that; but it will require work.  Onwards to that study.

Time to dance the message.
