Starting with the BC Children’s Hospital in 1988-89, and returning home for 1990-present, I have seen this beauty up front, real, full on and personal. Here is what I have seen.
- On average, each and every year, The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised $4-6 per man, woman and child in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador for the Hospital and it’s kids.
- Each year, hundreds of thousands of donations are made by campuses, companies and communities… by individuals and organizations alike.
- Each year, hundreds of volunteers converge for two days to put off a live Telethon that reaches and rocks.
- Each year, those hundreds of volunteers leave egos and differences aside to support a common cause; our children whether we personally have them or not (I do not).
That is beautiful.
It is so beautiful that, while my mother was alive, I pretty much missed every one of her birthdays on June 5 (since 1988) because the Telethon was on… and she understood. I help coordinate and train a team of individuals that both supervise and serve on the phone banks; the front lines, if you will. These are remarkable people with their own stories of connection to the Janeway. We all have our stories; and they fire us up to engage and commit… and have fun doing it.
Capturing some of that over the years is this fun video from a few years back…. Please, Whatever Your Name Is…. Whether it is the staff of the Foundation, or NTV, the hundreds of Telethon volunteers or the thousands and thousands of donors… this is a beautiful thing.
This week, we have been writing and recording on the virtue that is Beauty. We blogged on it on LinkedIn and went live on Facebook. It is all in the link. The bottom line is that Beauty is the capacity to see the good. When we see the good, we can work with the good. It is strength centered leadership; working with what we have to do amazing things, together. The Janeway Telethon is such an amazing thing.
It is beautiful.
God willing, I will enjoy many more opportunities to serve. For now, 30 years in, behind the scenes and bringing zeal, honor, love, unity, idealism, wholeheartedness and more… I am sincerely humbled by this initiative of service and the opportunity to serve.
To all involved, here is to a wondrous, productive and beautiful Telethon.
Peace, passion and prosperity.
