To date, we have been exploring and munching on a new work ethic that might speak across generations at school, work, business and community. To date, we have dug in on:
- The question of Building a New Work Ethic?
- picking it up with Part II
- and Part III
- and Parts IV and V.
In the last going off, we asked you to…
Think…
What if we honored and respected impact, built on a plan (order), a passion for the excellence of execution (initiative, zeal, and confidence)… and delivered with unity in diversity (independence and cooperation).
Well, amidst invigilating exams this week, I have had my own time to ponder, reflect and indeed munch on this some more. It seems to me, at this stage, that some of the generational virtues pieces are Forbearance, Idealism, Initiative, and Generosity.
NOW…
As I prepare to teach Organizational Behaviour in Intersession from May to June, with a whole new class, I am playing around with the idea of introducing my new students to the teacher that changed my life way back in 1980. I have done so very limitedly (a word?, it is now) in the past but now I intend to have full screen head shot on the big screen and share the story.
He was a man of Forbearance, Idealism, Initiative, and Generosity. I believe that the story will connect. I intend to experiment and to observe its results in developing added connection and understanding.
Even as I right this… it occurs to me that, should this show merit and value, there is an acronym here. I love acronyms. 🙂
Go BIIG and Deeper.
Forbearance is to bear things, to bear down and get at things; such an Elder notion of work and order. Then there is Idealism (the Boomers), Initiative (Gen X) and Generosity (Gen Y, in terms of their approach to Cooperation and Acceptance of others). I am going to dig deeper on this over the next couple of weeks and I hope you follow along… and give your own thought to this matter of connecting the generations at school, work, business and community.
Peace, passion and prosperity.
