The 3Cs

Earlier this week, we launched into a second leg of exploration around Openness as a strength of character and leadership.  And tonight, we offered a WHATSUPWITDAT Episode on the 3Cs and 3Ds and their connection with Openness and problem solving.  Dale Carnegie contended that the first order of business in winning friends, influencing people and leading effectively… was to stop criticizing, condemning and complaining.  His book How to Win Friends and Influence People and the worldwide programs and courses built around his work still speak to this fundamental notion.  The material is well worth checking out.  We strongly encourage it.   To be truly open to creativity and solutions, we must first put a cease and desist on the 3Cs.

The 3Ds and a Whole Lotta Openness

As a global Master Facilitator with The Virtues Project, I offer that, in stopping the 3Cs, one must not only practice the other 29 principles Carnegie offered… but what I call the 3 D’s.  Stopping the 3Cs creates a vacuum that must be filled.  In filling that vacuum, I suggest we…

  • Discern.  Discernment is the virtue of thinking things through; of exploring the various perspectives and finding the wisdom amongst and between.  It draws on the virtues of Thoughtfulness and Wisdom and Excellence.
  • Decide.  Decisiveness is the virtue of committing to an action; fully committing after one has discerned.  It draws on the virtues of Determination and Commitment and Devotion.
  • Dare.  Daring is the virtue of doing; based on the virtues of Courage and Initiative.

The GIFT of December

Consider for the month of December… to hold a Fast on the 3Cs and replace them with the 3Ds.  What would that look like at school, work, business or community?  What would it require?  What would it return?  Try it as an experiment in your classroom, on your campus, at your place of work and\or business and in your community.  Give yourself that gift for these special days ahead, however you celebrate them.  And, see how that launches you into 2017.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
