Earlier this week, we posted this on The Acceptance of Leadership on LINKEDIN.  Last week, we posted our latest edition of Leader ToC™ right here in the EPIC Blog.

All of that is to say that we continue here with exploring the power that is the virtue of Acceptance as a strength of leadership.  Acceptance is what I call the “starting point virtue”.  I also affectionately refer to it as the “freedom virtue”.  It frees us to to see things for what they are, when they are.  Consider the now classic version of The Serenity Prayer…

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

Accepting the things we cannot change, frees us to move forward.  Dale Carnegie, in his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, once wrote that we should ask ourselves what is the worst that can happen, accept that it could happen and then improve upon the worst.  Acceptance moves us beyond the WHAT-IFS to the WHAT-CAN-I-DO-NOWS.  Acceptance frees us to see the situation for what it is without precluding us from believing that we can move forward from there.

So, what situation are you facing that demands Acceptance?  What scenario is staring you down that says “Accept me for what I am so you can move forward?”  Acceptance is not surrender.  It is realism, detachment and true engagement.
