Just yesterday, I offered up on A Meaningful New Year. I humbly suggest the read and reflect. Today, I simply focus on Resolve… as virtue; a “fixity of purpose”. Resolutions have gotten a bad wrap. Most resolutions are not actually born of Resolve. Hence, they are not true resolutions.
Resolve is born of Commitment and Steadfastness and Determination. A mentor once shared with me that “Commitment is doing the thing you said you would do when you felt committed, long after you no longer feel committed“. And, considering such meaning, true Commitment and Resolve must be carefully discerned and decided.
Last night, I posted on Facebook….
- As we enter a new year… it is important to understand that calendar years are constructs and bring neither good nor bad. Much of what is going on in the world is not about the year but about how we are living on this planet. There is work to be done far beyond ridding ourselves of one year and entering another. To deny such is the idlest of fancy. Humanity rocks. Inhumanity sucks. Moving forward, together, stronger… that is the proverbial ticket. A “new year” gives us simply a point to set out again and do better. We need do better.
I suggest that Resolve requires us to be absolutely clear on what is meaningful as mission. For me, the words of Frederick Buechner remain resonant; where he suggests the idea that “vocation is the place where our deep gladness meets the world’s deep need”. Discerning and deciding on that can find our best Resolve. For me, considering the needs of the world and its betterment is where I am starting my own deeper dive of Resolve in 2022.
More specifically… when I consider what matters most to me personally and professionally, I can find the core of my Resolve for 2022. When I consider all that is soulfully purposeful and joyful for me, and where I want and intend to bring my energies, I start understanding how my own health is central to engaging it all.
BOXsa is the idea that keeps speaking to me… that unique combination of loves for Boxing and Salsa. My Resolve in 2022 is to explore both as path to strength and health and a renewed vibrancy. This is not simply a “resolution” as we have come to poorly understand such. This is my Resolve; my Commitment. BOXsa will be my path to the kind of joy that ‘Abdu’l-Bahá spoke of in saying “Joy gives us wings! In times of joy our strength is more vital, our intellect keener, and our understanding less clouded. We seem better able to cope with the world and to find our sphere of usefulness.” Be it resolved that BOXsa and the even prayerful learning of the combined craft, will be my core joy, serving my health, strength, intellect and understanding. It will serve me to better serve what matters most to me.
As we each enter 2022, may we find our best meaning and “fixity of purpose” … and how we can personally grow and collectively serve. Ask yourself first, “What truly and soulfully matters most to me in 2022?” Then ask, “What matters most to me that will ultimately serve me in serving all that matters most?” Find your true Resolve. If I can help, connect with me.
Peace. 😉
