Tenacious Sagacious Steps

First, this week, I invite you to check out Purposeful and Kind. In it, I posed the thought that “Purposefulness is a Virtue; a strength of character. It brings meaning to life. It gives it true value… and we get to define it, as parents, kindred, friends, colleagues and more. We get to define it as educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders. We get to also help others define their own by living ours. And we can look to the dreams of our childhood for signs and signals. I am looking back and forward. Clarity abounds, and more to follow. But, clarity is there.”

With the Baha’i Fast upon me and now into Day 3, clarity continues. And, as the video indicates I am diving into Sagacity. This morning, I posted on Facebook and LinkedIn…

“For me, today is a day of #struggle and #Sagacity … that capacity to discern a deeper insight. At 9:43 pm this evening, it will be one month since #bestlittledogintheworld Panda passed. She was not “like” family. She was family. She was not part of my family. With no parents nor children, she was my whole and own family. I saw and see her not as pet, but as Little Wolf to my Big Wolf. We walked life together for 13+ years. Why do I offer this? Enter Sagacity. Enter this TED talk on #grief … maybe when those of us who say we cannot seem to move on, we are really saying we do not intend to move on without honoring who we love. Grief is proportional to genuine Love. Genuine #Love is proportional to #Honor and Strength. Grieving does not imply the inability to move forward. It implies we will move forward being so moved by those we Love. It is #Courage in action.”

And I posted this TED talk by Nora McInerny on grief and moving forward.

My point? Of late, I have been purposefully reflecting back … and imagining forward … on path. I have been exploring Tenacity, and now Sagacity, as virtue; strength of character. Tenacity is that fierce and flexible Determination to “get there”, wherever we imagine “there” to be. Sagacity can be our capacity to deliberately discern our way there. Together, they forge a kind of Resilience that is best for us. We get to determine our way. We may have no idea what the future holds, but we can discern and determine our countenance and gate walking forward to it.

For me, I know what I will be working on with respect to living and walking my best life, with Integrity. I have discerned and decided with the happening of my recent 61st birthday.

That said, enter Tenacity and Sagacity for the walking forward. Tenacity is that capacity to keep walking, and Sagacity is that capacity for discerning each step that is right for us. As Richard Bolles once premised, our mission and purpose is not some fixed state that one day we discover not unlike a mountaintop where we can see everything. Mission and purpose are slowly unfurled. And it requires self awareness. When we have a true sense of what is important to us and we are aware of our strengths and capacities, we explore mission and purpose by bringing our best to life each day… to that which is most important… and see where that takes us. Then, moving forward is one tenacious sagacious step at a time. With that in mind and heart, this morning I took the opportunity to assess my passion, purpose and propensity for exploring character. I finalized my new ROCK 109 poster, identifying 109 virtues we work with and on at Epic Engage.

Over this College Break this week, and The Fast I am now in and amidst, I will be reviewing and finalizing design of my new website, and better identifying and articulating on my work as a College educator and with Epic Engage. I will be diving ever deeper on inventorying what matters most to me and what, with 61 years of life invested, I best bring to the table personally and professionally. I will forge an ever greater clarity around base camp (this crossroads in my life, this intersection) for me, all the better knowing that:

  • there is indeed a mountain to climb (the rest of my life)
  • I do not know what it holds ahead
  • but I can know what I will bring to the party and path… including the twin capacities of Tenacity and Sagacity.

My thoughts to you are:

  • Get What Color is Your Parachute? by Dick Bolles (I have no vested interest, but I wholly believe in the content and have for some 39 years now… I have multiple copies over those 39 years)… and you can find it here on Amazon too..
  • Work through the book.
  • Get clear on your own inventory. Be that self aware of what you bring to your own life path and party.
  • Then, accept that you do not know the future, but you can know what you bring to it…
  • And, practice Tenacity and Sagacity moving forward.

This past week I wrote on 4 Months to Live and, these past few weeks on Tenacity, Wisdom, the Brain and more… and I recommend the reads. That said, consider your base camp (individually and/or organizationally) and the mystery that is the future. Our way forward is about knowing where we are, what is most important to us, what we bring to the proverbial table, and how we engage Tenacity and Sagacity on the path forward. Panda instinctively and implicitly checked all the boxes. I will Honor her by rising to her example.

I hope to see you on the path.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

A “PD” Day?

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross suggested there were 5 stages of grief. We are experiencing them now. Some we might go through quickly, others less so. It is a personal experience. I think I am in the Bargaining piece now, figuring my way through. Last week, I shared on The Wall and the Eye. In it, I talked about the inner eye. I suggest the read. Today, on LinkedIN, I shared on Certainty in Uncertain Times. Again, I suggest the read, and reflect.

My point this day is this. I am in my 26th day of self imposed isolation and intent on a longer run yet. The introvert in me is cool with it all. The extrovert is trusting in the process and figuring out strategies. Ultimately, we are amidst much uncertainty and to get some sense of certainty, we need go inward. I need to, for sure. Try these on. I will.

A little PD for the day, for me… amidst teaching and working online. Discernment and Perceptiveness. I am in the midst of mine. How might they apply for you today?

Peace, passion and prosperity…

The Wall and the Eye

Transparency alert. I am a Baha’i. That is my core. I am working on it. And in these days, I can do and be nothing less. There are no easy answers; only great questions and ponderings.

In BE, at Home, last week, I shared that “I am seeing this (personal isolation and lock down) as an opportunity to go inward”. I would suggest that this past week has seen a duality, inward and outward. Since that time of my last post here, I have posted on LinkedIn, thoughts on:

I have been going online (Facebook) with “socials” with friends who just show up. That, in part, satiates the massive extrovert in me. Prayerful moments and down time satiate the massive introvert in me.

Yes, I am a man of both. Bottom line is I am going inward and outward. I have always been an “and” person… the cake and the eating it. 🙂

That being said, this day, and amidst teaching online, grading, writing and doing nothing, something is missing. A wall has been hit. I can feel it. Palpably so. Maybe it simply needs a strategic drive with my music, insular and independent. Quite possibly. But, it also is speaking to me of something else. My restless spirit, my Soul, is whispering in a scream, and I need to listen. Now. Today.

Soul Sis Stuff

My “soul sis” posted this the other day, and I found it both challenging and freeing somehow.

It speaks to me of going within in order to strengthen without.

It speaks to me that the ultimate battle is within.

The eye of the tornado. Amanda sings of it.

Then, my soul sis posted this.

She has a way of doing that. 🙂

“As ye have faith, so shall your powers and blessings be.”

This is the balance.

Faith grounds itself in the eye of the tornado. Faith does not require preconditions. It is why it is Faith.

It is not blind. It sees beyond. Beyond this matrix.

It sees, with an inner eye.

The Inner Eye

I am pondering these words, this day…

Man has two powers, and his development two aspects. One power is connected with the material world and by it he is capable of material advancement. The other power is spiritual and through its development his inner, potential nature is awakened. These powers are like two wings. Both must be developed, for flight is impossible with one wing. — Abdu’l-Bahá

and…

Man has also spiritual powers: imagination, which conceives things; thought, which reflects upon realities; comprehension, which comprehends realities, memory, which retains whatever man imagines, thinks, and comprehends. The intermediary between the five outward powers and the inward powers, is the sense which they possess in common, that is to say, the sense which acts between the outer and inner powers, conveys to the inward powers whatever the outer powers discern. It is termed the common faculty, because it communicates between the outward and inward powers, and thus is common to the outward and inward powers. For instance, sight is one of the outer powers; it sees and perceives this flower, and conveys this perception to the inner power — the common faculty — which transmits this perception to the power of imagination, which in its turn conceives and forms this image and transmits it to the power of thought; the power of thought reflects, and having grasped the reality, conveys it to the power of comprehension; the comprehension, when it has comprehended it, delivers the image of the object perceived to the memory, and the memory keeps it in its repository. The outward powers are five: the power of sight, of hearing, of taste, of smell, and of feeling. The inner powers are also five: the common faculty, and the powers of imagination, thought, comprehension, and memory. — Abdu’l-Bahá

and

…it is my hope that thine inner eye may be opened wide, so that unto thee the very core of the divine mysteries may be disclosed. — Abdu’l-Bahá

THE ROAD AHEAD

It is my hope too. I may take that drive.

Nay, I will.

My spirit is calling.

That is one immediate road. But amidst hitting this wall, I am understanding the need to see through it… and in so doing, smash it. I cannot as yet; see through it, that is. We live in a world with much uncertainty. We always have. These days, it is compounded by a truly global nature. My Faith tells me we are going to be OK. Humanity will be OK. There may be work to do. Indeed, there will be. But maybe just maybe, the first and decisive battle is within. To be of joy and service to the world… to live these words of readiness (above) amidst the days in which we live.

Today, I am hitting a wall. Today, I explore the power to dream… of a sound mind… and heart. This wall will be beaten down.

Real. Raw. Reflective. Relentless.

Peace, passion and prosperity…
