News and Views, Volume 2

News and Views is a new initiative for 2017.  On a more random and periodic basis, we will do a short post with some links to read and ponder.  In some ways, it is a catch up.  In other ways, we might bring the mustard; and a little relish.  🙂

THE PROMISE

This second issue examines the idea of “promise”.  We start with a post on That GREAT Promise.   The word promise itself is noted to mean:

1. a declaration that something will or will not be done
2. an express assurance on which expectation is to be based
3. something that has the effect of an express assurance

Assurance is defined as a certainty of mind.  It is grounded in the Virtue called Certitude.  Certitude is not arrogance.  It is a simple fundamental sense of knowing.

In reading the aforementioned and linked post, expect a constructive challenge to be delivered.  Just sayin’.  🙂

THE HOT DOG

The HOT Dog™ is our lead piece.  Just last night, we posted this Facebook Live AFTER SCHOOL video on purpose on promise.  It was inspired by a remarkable day, and the story will tell itself.  Here, I personally offer thoughts on exploring purpose and making promises.

THE MUSTARD

In support and addition, we also offer this post on Your Promissory Note. It will also constructively challenge you on the matter of promise; and provide a possible vehicle for same.

THE Ol’ RELIABLE CATCH UP

As a regular and reliable compendium of sorts, we offer this link to over 330 LinkedIn posts to date around character and leadership and education… and this link to our EPIC Blog.  You will find hundreds of posts addressing matters of character and leadership pertinent to school, work, business and community.

THE RELISH

And we offer this video on the power of promise.  Rise up.   🙂

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Leader ToC with Joel Sweeney

This month, with our third in the series of Leader ToC™ Blog Posts for 2017, we interview Joel Sweeney.  Joel is a truly longtime colleague and friend, and I am so thrilled that he has opted to weigh in on Leader ToC™ .  That being said, Leader ToC™ (Thoughts on Character) is our monthly series engaging leaders around the world on character, leadership and more.

Before we actually get started this month, here is last month’s edition with Ray Hollister (including a link to that with Stephanie Staples back in January) … and a compilation of the first six in the series from 2016.  This month makes our ninth issue.  We are thankful, and look forward to continuing the learning journey.  Enjoy.

INTRODUCING JOEL SWEENEY

We are indeed proud to say Joel is one of the earliest members of The CAST™.  Here is just a little of what we know of Joel.

Joel Sweeney is all about effective communications. He has been speaking, training, coaching and writing about it for over 20 years. He is the author of The Wedding MC Handbook and Little Helpings of Food for Thought. His third book, The Speaker’s Tool Box – Perfecting the Craft of Speaking, was released in the 2015. He is the owner of Professionally Speaking (established in 1995). Joel helps entrepreneurs and business professional become effective, engaging and confident speakers.

So, let’s get at it to …

Engage the Leader ToC™

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Hey Joel.  Thank you so much for joining us on Leader ToC™, my friend.

JOEL SWEENEY

My pleasure Barry… glad to do it.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Joel, we always start with a question that goes something like, “Who are you and what is it you do?”

JOEL SWEENEY

Well Barry, as you know, I am an entrepreneur and the owner of Professionally Speaking. I have packaged more than twenty years of researching, training, coaching and writing into a product I call The Speaker’s Tool Box. Personally, I view speaking as a craft and I use that analogy to share my unique perspective on that same craft of speaking.  I know what it is like to have extreme speaking anxiety. I tackled that demon several years ago and I still remember the limitations it caused me.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Interesting.  So, you come from a true place of empathy.  That is powerful.  With that in mind, for whom do you do this work best?  In other words Joel, who is your best audience?

JOEL SWEENEY

I get the most excitement and satisfaction in helping successful entrepreneurs and business professionals become confident, engaging and effective speakers. Many of these individuals have put all their energies into their businesses and careers. They are at a stage where they want to proceed further. For entrepreneurs they want to become the face and voice of their business. For business professionals they want to advance into higher positions of responsibility or take on leadership roles with their professional associations. In order to move to the next level, many find that they need to be good speakers and/or presenters. However, they lack the skills and confidence to do it. I help them deal with that.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Much needed.  I like it.  Then, how do you best serve them in doing so?  In other words, how do you offer your services?

JOEL SWEENEY

Lately, most of my focus has been on group and individual coaching. During the past few months, I have been reworking my content and I now offer my products and services online. This is allowing me to reach a much broader market and have a greater impact.  I also use writing to get my message out to the world. I am the author of three books and am currently working on my fourth.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

You have a substantial body of work Joel; which really leads me to my next question.  Based on your work over the years… in these times, what are the challenges and opportunities of leadership… from your perspective and experience?

JOEL SWEENEY

I think one of the big challenges of leadership today is the erosion of oral communication skills. The reliance on electronic communication such as email and texting have reduced the effectiveness of oral communication. At its worst, it can impact on both internal and external communications and negatively affect productivity. This challenge is also a great opportunity for leaders to differentiate themselves and their organizations from their competition and experience personal and organizational growth by availing of opportunities to improve their communication and speaking skills and those of their employees.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Indeed.  I see this so very much in my own work as a college business educator.  And, it impacts leadership.  So, when considering the strengths of leadership as they might relate to character… what virtues do you consider to be paramount as strengths and why do you believe them vital?

JOEL SWEENEY

There are a few virtues that come to mind when it comes to communication. The first one is commitment. If you decide to pursue coaching to improve your speaking skills, if you want to manage your speaking anxiety, you must be committed to the process and to doing the work. There is no ‘secret pill’.  I firmly believe that our virtues are infused into our communications, particularly when we speak. You have to be true to your virtues. You can’t communicate authenticity if you are not authentic. You can’t communicate passion if you are not passionate about what you are doing. Let your speaking style demonstrate your virtues. You can’t fake them. The virtues will be different for each individual.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

We do have core and hard wired virtues and character strengths… each of us.  While we can practice all strengths of character and develop them like any muscle… some are certainly more natural to us as individuals.  I like that.  Given that, what is one piece of advice you might have for our readership on developing leadership and strength of character in these times?

JOEL SWEENEY

When you are in a position of leadership you are always being judged and assessed. Your actions and your words are important. Remember that you also communicate with your body language which includes eye contact and facial expression. It is important to ensure that your body language is in sync with your spoken word. They are both critical components of how you communicate with others. Always be prepared to put your best you forward. You can’t be effective as a part-time leader.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

I could not agree more.  Integrity is about alignment and consistency.  It is so important to remember this.  I like where you are coming from and going to on it.  That being said Joel, we are almost out of time.  So, how can someone connect with you for more information on your work?

JOEL SWEENEY

My website is www.joelsweeney.com and my email is joel@joelsweeney.com I am also on Facebook and Twitter. Search for Joel Sweeney.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Will do, though I know where to find you. 🙂  To our readership, connect with Joel.  You will not regret it.  Again, my friend… I want to thank you and keep up the great and focused work that you are doing.

JOEL SWEENEY

I have enjoyed it Barry.  Thank you for the opportunity.

Thoughts on Thoughtfulness in Leadership

Thoughts on thoughtfulness are found in this video.  42 minutes on a diverse and daring day… but I suggest worth the watch and listen, IMHO.

Thoughtfulness is not simply about being kind and considerate.  It is about being thoughtful… thoughtFULL.  It is about giving thought to our deeds and our words; and to the big questions… and small actions.  My heroes in life have each manifested the quality.  It is, indeed and in deed, core to powerful and engaging leadership.

Here are some other thoughts on thoughtfulness:

What do you think; really think?  Give it some thought.

THIS MONTH

As we move into Spring, and longer days, here are some thoughts to ponder possibly.

With that last link in mind, and from last month, how did you apply:

  • C — a character strength that you…
  • L — like or admire
  • a — and
  • W — explain why you say that.

We suggested you use the formula to randomly identify and reinforce character strengths in others.  We suggested that you be honest and genuine in doing so. This is not flattery. This is courageously and truthfully seeing and naming strengths.  If you didn’t try it out, we invite you to go back to the February post and wrap your head around it. C.L.a.W.™ your way through it yourself and see. It will take determination and diligence, but it will pay dividends.

Leader Talk.

For your reading value, we offer you perspectives on leadership and springing into action.

OFFERING AGAIN:

We thought to again offer these resources from last month.  They are good, plus we added.

SPRING BREAK: 12 Weeks…

… to Healthy and Happy Habits.  Listen in and have a look.

I am 303 pounds, down 7 from 310.  But, my highest was 316 several years back.  I have been, in the last 19 years, as low as 260.  Still, in the 90’s, I was 220-240 pounds (convert to kilos, if you will) and in the best shape of my life.  Now, it is time for my own version of back to the future.

244, 40″ Waist… Here I Come.

But first, 264 and 42″ waist by June 3… 12 weeks; 3 months.  That is my goal and fierce intention.  Liza Burt and I are on parallel journeys with different goals.  She will engage and share her journey; I… mine.  We are motivators and we are motivated; and we invite you to join by:

  • cheering us on
  • sharing your insights
  • joining in with your own goals

This is my big challenge, but it is time.  Watch the video.  Decide for yourself.  My decision is made.

Character and Behaviour: Up a Notch

Character and leadership in times of both trial and triumph are inextricably linked. Munch on this piece from the Ivey Business Journal… if you will.  With that in mind, and with the approach of Spring 2017 some 10 days in the distance, we offer this piece of news for a new series of targeted videos on behaviour and character at school, work, business and community.

I have heard it said that character is that part of us that enables others to truly believe in us.  We might be unconditionally loved, but character defines others’ belief and faith and trust in us.  This new series will be all about exploring practical applications of organizational behaviour, grounded in character.  It (character) builds trust and faith in us … and our organizations.  It builds our very own trustworthiness.

The videos will be short and fiercely focused with simple but useful take-aways. But, make no mistake, they will speak to the message of JFK; building character as a consistent state of being for when it is most and especially needed. (Thanks to Trent Langdon for the quote on graphic from our recent broadCAST™ too… JFK is a hero of mine.)

We also invite you to subscribe to Epic Engage™ on You Tube, a site filled with hundreds of videos around motivation, leadership and character.  It can serve as a resource for all including educators, coaches, entrepreneurs, leaders, parents and youth alike.

Join us on the journey.

5 Questions for United Diversity

The poster below and to the right occupies my desktop background.  It is a collection of pictures of people and animals and characters and places that have meaning for me.  They are diverse and yet the same.  Earlier this week, we posted this on Exploring Difference and Sameness.  And last Friday, we offered up 10 perspectives on Springing into Action.  The core thought streaming through both posts and the poster is that diversity and unity are not mutually exclusive concepts.  The strongest form of unity is based on diversity.  The strongest form of diversity is united.

So, this week, we have but five questions for you.  We invite you to read the aforementioned and linked posts first.  Then, ask yourself…

  • What strengths do I personally possess and manifest loud and clear?
  • What strengths does each member of my class, team, company or community possess and manifest loud and clear?
  • How are these strengths diverse and complimentary?
  • How are these strengths the same and reinforcing?
  • How can we best coordinate and optimize our collective strengths?

Spend some time on these questions as a powerful human resource inventory and conversation, driven by the diversity and unity of strengths as strategic advantage… for your class, school, team, business or community.  The answers will reveal a powerful synergy.

And we will be going deeper in the weeks to come.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

broadCAST March 2017: Spring into Action!

Springing into action.  How do we do it?  Especially when we might not feel like it? These are the intriguing questions of the month.

Happy March and welcome to The broadCAST™.  This is a monthly weigh in by members of The CAST™ of Epic Engage™ Independent experts in their own right, members of The CAST™  are asked to answer a question of simple but possibly profound nature. We wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with these experts on their respective expertise and how it might be of service to you.  They each bring great value in service to their work.

Oh, and I cannot forget… we welcome our newest member of The CAST™, Liz Burt!

For March 2017

With the above in heart and mind, the question to The CAST™ for March is:

With SPRING in mind and on the horizon, how do you get your motor running when you need to and maybe do not initially feel like it?

In other words, how do you spring into action when needed?  What is your “secret”?

LIZ BURT SAYS

This is a topic that I have been mulling over a lot lately as I wonder how I will motivate myself out of a lazy winter rut. My advice is to try and imagine the cost associated with doing nothing. In terms of my health and fitness, I know the cost associated with doing nothing is feeling like crap, being moody, and having no energy.  Looking ahead at a new running season, my strategy is to set a goal, build a plan, and then start with small steps and build. First, I will set a goal or sign up for a race. Then I write out a training plan and just start picking away, day by day, and step by step, inch by inch. Each step you take towards your goal, no matter what it is, should build momentum and the action will get easier and easier. You must be patient and forgiving with yourself and ensure your action comes from a place of love. When we set goals for ourselves we can get frustrated when things don’t happen quickly enough, but Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Liz Burt is about real and healthy results.  She is a master motivator. She is also a marathoner and marketing specialist living in Calgary, AB. She holds a three-year diploma in Business Management and Marketing, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, and will begin her MA at the University of Alberta this spring. In addition to being wild about learning and running, Liz is also an avid traveller and has backpacked through twenty countries in the last few years. In her professional life she loves working with small businesses to develop simple and effective marketing and communications plans that achieve real results. She is creative, a bit of a health nut and loves to share her healthy passions in her blog. Liz is a goal setter and risk taker. She loves coffee, cooking, and great conversations. She gets huge joy in helping people and small businesses achieve their goals and are always ready to lend an ear and share advice. www.soundbodysoundmind.wordpress.com

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS

I am not so sure I would classify my answer as a ‘secret’, but I have to honestly say that springing into action – for me at least – is the result of planning and commitment. Invariably, when I don’t get around to something, or when I deliberately procrastinate, it is because I have not successfully accomplished one (or both!) of those. Either I have failed to plan, or I have failed to commit. So my sincere suggestion for those who wish to spring into action as that season rolls around is to deliberately plan out your path, then genuinely commit to the path ahead.

Ray Hollister is all about strength, excellence and potential. In fact, he has a very special connection raywith students – he’s helped thousands achieve average scores of over 90% for 20 years! His love of learning… and his ability to teach anybody the same easy strategies he used to study far less than everyone else while maintaining outrageously high test scores… quickly earned him a lot of ‘friends’ seeking his advice. Ray has personally conducted numerous studies to develop an intense, focused, and  results oriented program for college students. With the success of that program, Ray set his sights on helping younger students in Junior High, High School, and those just entering University. The end result is a program that will help any student – especially YOU – learn more, study less, and earn consistently high grades.  www.rayhollister.net

KRISTA WALSH SAYS

Via vid, I choose to share my message today… just my little ol’ two or three cents on spring in the step.  Enjoy.  🙂

Krista Walsh is about productivity and creating cash flow.  Krista is an award winning entrepreneur, author and speaker. From dental assistant drop out, to family business builder, to emerging leader for Atlantic Canada (twice), Krista will share her journey from failure to success and explore how to increase your cash flow and productivity.  In 2005 Krista established “KC COLLECT,” a credit, collection and resource company. It would be the first and only female-owned collection agency in Atlantic Canada.  Krista’s informative presentations engage and challenge audiences to effectively manage and build their businesses, professional relationships, and enhance their profiles.  Andrew Oland- President, Moosehead Breweries says “Krista is a smart, dedicated and passionate woman. MARK BLACK SAYS

With SPRING in mind and on the horizon, how do you get your motor running when you need to and maybe do not initially feel like it? I reconnect with my “why”. Nietzsche said, “he who has a big enough why, can endure any how.” When I know why I’m doing something, the motivation to do it comes easily.

Mark Black, CSP is all about wellness and resilience.  He is a Heart blackand Double-Lung Transplant Recipient, 4-time marathoner, resilience expert, speaker, and coach. Mark helps people “Thrive in Challenging Times”. A Certified Speaking Professional, Mark has inspired more than 100,000 people in more than 350 presentations. At 23 Mark faced an unimaginable challenge. His doctor informed him that his heart was failing. Without a rare and dangerous heart and double-lung transplant he would not see his 25th birthday. Three years later, after receiving his second chance at life, Mark ran his first marathon. Mark spends his free time with his beautiful wife and two kids.  www.markblack.ca

SHEENA GROBB SAYS

How do I spring into action when needed? I certainly have found myself staring blankly into space, overwhelmed by the long list of tasks in front of me…. wondering how to get started!  When I really need to kickstart the process, I put on my favourite tea, get out my trusty whiteboard, and “brain dump”  all the things I have to do into a clear list.  (I draw a box in front of each task – almost like a bullet point – so I can check off the task once complete).  You can use a journal, tablet, or smartphone alternatively, but somehow I find a large whiteboard (in plain sight) easiest to keep motivated.  I then go through the list and find the 3 most important tasks… and commit to completing them that very day if possible.  Somehow getting all my tasks out of my brain frees me up to actually focus on one!  There are a number of helpful apps available too – I use Wunderlist – to keep me organized and on track wherever I go.  One tip I would recommend when choosing the tasks to complete on any given day… to start with an easy one you can complete quickly to get the ball rolling.  The sense of accomplishment fuels further productivity!

Sheena Grobb Singer/Songwriter and Speaker… is humbly amazing. “It is without a doubt a masterpiece of songwriting and soundscape. Really incredible, soulful music. She will definitely get a huge audience in time, trust me.” Alex Wharton, Abbey Road Studios. A songbird from the age of two, songwriter at ten, with 3 albums under her belt, a nomination for the Western Canadian Music Awards, Sheenaand over 500 tour dates across Canada, the US, and the UK, Sheena Grobb (one of Canada’s best kept secrets) is spilling over. With the release of her newest album, The Breakless Heart, mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, and a life changing music video created by Lindsey Nelko (past choreographer with So You Think You Can Dance), Sheena is embarking on her most meaningful project yet – The Living Compassion Project™ – inviting others to “unlock their lives” through sharing their stories… as she begins to share hers. www.sheenagrobb.com

MAJEED MOGHARREBAN SAYS

Self-discipline is the art of doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like it. The secret to getting started is “to begin, begin.” Don’t think, just start. The easiest way to start is to choose a micro-commitment. In a study done to try to get people to exercise, the most effective strategy was to get people to commit to putting on their workout clothes every morning. Not committing to 30 minutes per day, or 3 days per week, all they asked was to take the very first micro-step: put on your workout clothes. Take the first micro step and let momentum propel you forward.

majeed-square-web-ready-300x300Majeed Mogharreban is all about entrepreneurship.  He owned and sold five successful businesses and traveled to 24 countries before he was 21 years old.  After early success in business, now his mission is to support the next generation of entrepreneurs to make a difference doing what they love. TRENT LANGDON SAYS

I frequently reference this quote from John F. Kennedy for both personal and professional purposes. It keeps me grounded, to support balanced living, to hit the challenges that lie ahead. In this light, I throw your way these 3 strategies (or building supplies, if you will) that work for me to energize and keep the roof stable and strong…

  1. Sleep – Early in my career, I did not respect its importance.
  2. Reading – This has become a part of my pre-sleep regimen. My reading time is set for 30+ minutes before turning out the lights and consists of mindfulness-based selections. I am currently making my way through the works of Dr. Wayne Dyer. It serves a dual purpose of decompression and self-awareness.
  3. Music – This is the one thing that I can rely on to boost energy levels instantaneously. My hearing has suffered, however my mood and motivation significantly benefits. I particularly enjoy having to drive to a meeting as the opportunity presents itself to ‘crank the tunes’ and turn up the energy levels.

Trent Langdon is all about building legacy through character education and development. He is a junior high school counselor for 650+ adolescents and is dedicated to serving his students, their families, and communities.  Trent works on behalf of his colleagues to build identity, protect professional roles, and to give teachers ‘a voice’; currently completing his 2nd term as a member of the Provincial Executive Council of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA) and now as the incoming NLTA Vice-President for the 2017-2019 term of office. Trent is also a Canadian Certified Counselor with the Canadian Counseling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and serves as a member of the CCPA Ethics Committee (Complaints Division).  And last but certainly not least, Trent is a proud contributor to the Epic Engage team. www.epicengage.com

JAMIE McCABE SAYS

Springing into action….I had to giggle at this a little because I tend to be a bit of a multitask-er which isn’t the best action plan I know, however when I need to get inspired and put my head down to get things accomplished I do have a few secret rituals. If I need to distract my own self from multitasking, I use an app with nature sounds to keep me focused and relaxed. Depending on the day, I may need silence and I inspire myself. On the flip side, when I need motivation to do my accounting, which isn’t my favorite task, I watch a movie which IS one of my favorite things. I know, you are wondering how do you focus when you have a movie on? I am not necessarily watching it as I may be mildly listening to it but then it ties something I enjoy with something I am not so inspired to get the motor running on. Oh and did I mention, I love lists! The more I get to scratch off the better for me so a handwritten list gets me and my pen in our focus zone. Another trick…I listen to Tony Robbins, he always motivates me and I can accomplish ANYTHING. These are just a few of the things that work for me and everyone is different so may you find your Pogo stick that launches you into great heights and propels you forward also.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN SAYS

With SPRING in mind and on the horizon, how do I get my motor running when I need to and maybe do not initially feel like it?  How do I spring into action when needed?  What is my “secret”?  For me, the trigger is the body; or should I say the B.O.D.Y.?.  I use an acronym I developed years ago.  B is BEAM.  It means put on your game face, whatever is required for the moment.  Professional actors know that your face triggers emotions.  You can manage your game face to manage your emotions.  O is OXYGEN.  Start breathing like you mean it.  Oxygen relaxes and energizes the body. Athletes know this one.  D is DANCE; which means posture.  Walk like it.  Move like it.  Y is the answer to the niggling little question that pops into our head…. “Can I do this?” or “Am I ready for this?”  You know the kinds of questions.  The auto answer is YES.   In fact, I would make the answer a powerful affirmation, of the highest order and own it.  Try, “YES, I am Discipline” or “YES, I am Zeal”.  I claim a virtue I need at the time as my birthright.  I essentially identify myself with the virtue.  I am not “practicing” it.  I am it.  Then, I literally spring into action.  Here, I speak to it on video.  Oh, and my Shinedown music is part of my soundtrack.  Indeed, my music is my meaning and I just posted on it last night.

Music, Meaning and Movement

Listen to Neil deGrasse Tyson on Becoming You.

What would this kind of authenticity, truthfulness and purposefulness look like for you?  What would your uniqueness look like?  What would your best self manifest? What would finding the combination of facts that apply to you look like?  And where do you start?

For me, I think in terms of songs that speak to my soul.

But also,

Even…

or these albums…

I could go on.  But music is a medium of meaning for me.  When I reflect upon the totality of tastes, I start to get clarity on my passion and purpose.  I consider the virtues or strengths of character that are represented in my musical tastes… zeal, discernment, courage, nobility, strength, unity, love, honor, idealism, wholeheartedness and more.

Yes, I think Neal has a point.  Neal’s Fandango does too.  🙂  What does your music say for you; about you?  Move with that.

Oh my music, if I didn’t have you.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
