On Words

In Done and Do last week, I shared on being “done”. And, I shared that I was stepping back for a bit. That said, today, I thought to share this on kickin’ and getting kicked and living life…. and this on going. Initiative is practiced in movement and stillness.

“ON” is not about hustle.

“ON” is about knowing when to move and to be still.

Be “ON”.

Onwards…

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Done and Do

“You will never get it all done.” This was advice given to me at a fine Italian restaurant in New York (in July 1997) by J. Oliver Crom, then CEO of Dale Carnegie and Associates. His point then resonates ever more so for me now. We think we have to “get it all done”… but it will never happen. That does not imply we should do nothing. It does imply that we must choose what we will do. That is one take on “done”.

Another plays in my heart and mind this day; things around which I am “done”. With work concluding on my new website, and amidst teaching online and living through a pandemic and historic times, I am finding more of the Watchmen referred to in my last post. Trials and triumphs alike are pointing to that which I am “done” and that which I intend to “do”.

I am done with any importance placed on fame or fortune. I will do on good work done for good reason, with good people. “The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct” resonates for me deeply.

I am done with any emphasis on rewards over effort. I will do effort over outcome. “Let deeds not words be your adorning” speaks to my heart.

I am done with “popularity” over purpose. I will do ardor over image. “Arise then unto that for which thou was created” hammers into my Soul.

I know the work I simply want to do. I know the life I simply want to do. I know that for which I am done; the hollow and meaningless. And now, over the next 16 days ahead of November, I am going underground. Oh, I will still be teaching online, and working my work and taking care of business… and living my life. But I will not be “out there”. I will be “in here”… in my humble home… The Greens… the “Bat Cave” for Panda and me. During that time, I intend to prayerfully, purposefully and joyfully ponder more on that for which I am done and that which I am ready to do. I will explore my own faith. and let my purpose ever closer find me. And I will do it SLOWER. I will detach.

My thought to you is think on the aspects of your life which are “done” for you and what you will “do” about it going forward. See you November 1.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

The Watchmen

In Break, I wrote “And for me, it is time for a letting go of some things. A break. “Everything requires everything” is a whisper I keep hearing and it feels like this Fall is the time for the falling away. There is still more to discern but clarity is sharpening it blades. Will it be violent? No. Will it be peaceful? Probably not. Will it be good and right? I have no doubt.”

Sometimes breaking takes time and effort. Sometimes it is overnight. Sometimes it is conscious and intended. Other times, it is forced upon us. This story comes to heart and mind this day.

There was once a lover who had sighed for long years in separation from his beloved, and wasted in the fire of remoteness. From the rule of love, his heart was empty of patience, and his body weary of his spirit; he reckoned life without her as a mockery, and time consumed him away. How many a day he found no rest in longing for her; how many a night the pain of her kept him from sleep; his body was worn to a sigh, his heart’s wound had turned him to a cry of sorrow. He had given a thousand lives for one taste of the cup of her presence, but it availed him not. The doctors knew no cure for him, and companions avoided his company; yea, physicians have no medicine for one sick of love, unless the favor of the beloved one deliver him.
At last, the tree of his longing yielded the fruit of despair, and the fire of his hope fell to ashes. Then one night he could live no more, and he went out of his house and made for the marketplace. On a sudden, a watchman followed 14 after him. He broke into a run, with the watchman following; then other watchmen came together, and barred every passage to the weary one. And the wretched one cried from his heart, and ran here and there, and moaned to himself: “Surely this watchman is Izrá’íl, my angel of death, following so fast upon me; or he is a tyrant of men, seeking to harm me.” His feet carried him on, the one bleeding with the arrow of love, and his heart lamented. Then he came to a garden wall, and with untold pain he scaled it, for it proved very high; and forgetting his life, he threw himself down to the garden.
And there he beheld his beloved with a lamp in her hand, searching for a ring she had lost. When the heart-surrendered lover looked on his ravishing love, he drew a great breath and raised up his hands in prayer, crying: “O God! Give Thou glory to the watchman, and riches and long life. For the watchman was Gabriel, guiding this poor one; or he was Isráfíl, bringing life to this wretched one!”

The watchmen may indeed be moving us. Flexibility is a strength in being moved. I am seeing trials and triumphs alike now, and they both seem to be moving me in a direction… both personally and professionally. I am seeing the Fall as a time of rising. A time to rise up. But, it is indeed a time. This Break is a slower and meandering one with moments of significance. That said, ain’t got no trouble in my life. I got the music in me; and it is ever playing louder.

I liken this time to my post-stroke. I see the world in such a space now. Things are moving us. What is moving you you? What trials and triumphs? Where are they moving you?

Peace, passion and prosperity…
