The 3D December Dare

The 3Cs

Earlier this week, we launched into a second leg of exploration around Openness as a strength of character and leadership.  And tonight, we offered a WHATSUPWITDAT Episode on the 3Cs and 3Ds and their connection with Openness and problem solving.  Dale Carnegie contended that the first order of business in winning friends, influencing people and leading effectively… was to stop criticizing, condemning and complaining.  His book How to Win Friends and Influence People and the worldwide programs and courses built around his work still speak to this fundamental notion.  The material is well worth checking out.  We strongly encourage it.   To be truly open to creativity and solutions, we must first put a cease and desist on the 3Cs.

The 3Ds and a Whole Lotta Openness

As a global Master Facilitator with The Virtues Project, I offer that, in stopping the 3Cs, one must not only practice the other 29 principles Carnegie offered… but what I call the 3 D’s.  Stopping the 3Cs creates a vacuum that must be filled.  In filling that vacuum, I suggest we…

  • Discern.  Discernment is the virtue of thinking things through; of exploring the various perspectives and finding the wisdom amongst and between.  It draws on the virtues of Thoughtfulness and Wisdom and Excellence.
  • Decide.  Decisiveness is the virtue of committing to an action; fully committing after one has discerned.  It draws on the virtues of Determination and Commitment and Devotion.
  • Dare.  Daring is the virtue of doing; based on the virtues of Courage and Initiative.

The GIFT of December

Consider for the month of December… to hold a Fast on the 3Cs and replace them with the 3Ds.  What would that look like at school, work, business or community?  What would it require?  What would it return?  Try it as an experiment in your classroom, on your campus, at your place of work and\or business and in your community.  Give yourself that gift for these special days ahead, however you celebrate them.  And, see how that launches you into 2017.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Open and Creative Thoughts

Earlier this week on LinkedIn, we introduced a discussion on Openness.  Upon doing some reading up STROon Openness as a virtue or strength of character, I came across this article on Openness to Experience and Creative Achievement… connecting Openness and Creativity.   In it, are identified four factors for Openness to Experience, including:

  • Explicit Cognitive Ability: This factor consisted primarily of traditional measures of intelligence (i.e., IQ tests), including fluid reasoning, mental rotation, verbal analogical reasoning, and working memory.
  • Intellectual Engagement: The essence of this factor was a drive to engage in ideas, rational thought, and the search for truth.
  • Affective Engagement: The essence of this factor was a preference for using emotions, gut feelings, and empathy to make decisions.
  • Aesthetic Engagement: The essence of this factor was a preference for aesthetics, fantasy, and emotional absorption in artistic and cultural stimuli.

The article goes on to explore Openness to Experience and its relation to Creative Achievement.  It is worth more than a read; but a considerable munch.  For now and for me, I suggest you might want to consider the behaviours associated with Openness as a strength of character.  At school, work, business or community…

  • What could honesty and transparency look like in our direct and candid conversations and sharing of perspectives … sincerely wanting to communicate?
  • What would Openness look like in our actions, free of hidden motives?
  • What would appreciating new ideas and opportunities look like?
  • What would caring about others’ viewpoints look like?
  • What about being open to life and work… how would that look?

How would these be practiced and manifested?  How could they be advanced through Explicit Cognitive Ability, Intellectual Engagement, Affective Engagement and Aesthetic Engagement?  What would be their impact?  How would they advance Creativity?  How would they advance both Trust and Trustworthiness?  How would that impact your culture at school, work, business and community?  Points and practices to ponder, in a world that seemingly challenges us to be closed.

Think about it.  Act upon it.  The return on investment is high.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

A SaD Day Indeed

This morning there are many awaking who are feeling sad and even scared. Indeed, the feelings being expressed by many are palpable and historic; and not as expected maybe some 24 hours ago.

But my post is not political.  Indeed, in my Facebook Live WHATSUPWITDAT broadcast last night on bullying, I addressed whatever thoughts I have on the possibility of a Trump presidency … and you are welcome to engage them.  I am not a political partisan, though I will admit to sharing in many of the rock-the-message-003sentiments of Mark LeBlanc last night on Facebook where he said…

Still awake and watching. It appears that Donald J. Trump will become President Trump. I stand with those who feared but never imagined this day would come. I will not blame the Russians, the FBI, or the rigged system. He ran the most divisive and disrespectful campaign I am aware of. And the majority spoke loud and clear. We will have a Republican senate, house and leader. As a moderate Republican and never Trump citizen, I am genuinely afraid. My positions would fall along the fiscally conservative and socially inclusive way of being. Independent analysis of his proposals project another $6 trillion will be added to our national debt. Compassion, acceptance and inclusion of our brothers and sisters who may not think, act, look or love a certain way are seriously at risk. Our nation will never be the same. Our place in the world will never be the same. We will survive. Keep your faith. Hold someone’s hand. Hug your children and keep your loved ones close.

And fight against the wall.
And fight against deporting 12,000,000 immigrants.
And fight against bullying.
And fight for freedom of the press.
And fight for liberty and justice for all.

I am not political, and deeply I do not fear.  I do believe in the fight to which he speaks.  That being said, I am also a Baha’i and I read this last night for guidance.   It grounds me.

“[Baha’is] will not affiliate themselves with political parties, become entangled in partisan issues, or participate in programmes tied to the divisive agendas of any group or faction. At the same time, Bahá’ís respect those who, out of a sincere desire to serve their countries, choose to pursue political aspirations or to engage in political activity. The approach adopted by the Bahá’í community of non-involvement in such activity is not intended as a statement expressing some fundamental objection to politics in its true sense; indeed, humanity organizes itself through its political affairs. Bahá’ís vote in civil elections, as long as they do not have to identify themselves with any party in order to do so.” — The Universal House of Justice

and then…

“The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds; through commendable and seemly conduct.” — Baha’ullah

So, where am I going with this?

Earlier this week, I introduced the notion of SaD is Good on LinkedIn.  In it, I offered up for contemplation and reflection… the virtues of Simplicity and Decisiveness.  Simplicity demands of (and offers to) us…

  • satisfaction with what we have, where and when we have it
  • a true knowing of what we care most about
  • a clearing of material, emotional and spiritual “clutter”
  • a staying true to purpose, on course… and…
  • an appreciation and enjoyment of life and the little things.

Decisiveness demands of (and offers to) us:

  • courage to decide and act
  • confidence in our choices
  • the time and wisdom to discern our best decisions
  • trust in our deepest truths … and…
  • commitment to carry out our decisions.

What would that look like in waking this day, however and wherever we awoke?  What would satisfaction and contentment look like and where would be its focus right now?  What would knowing of what in which we truly believe look like?  What would it look like to be unfazed and focused on that for which we have control (devoid of all forms of clutter) … staying on course with the courage, confidence and commitment to what we know is our best and most true decisions and purpose?  What would it look like in our classrooms, schools, workplaces, businesses and communities?  What would that look like in our conversations with others who might wonder of the future as well?  Defining and answering these questions manifests and advances Simplicity and Decisiveness.

When I ponder…

When I ponder, “The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds; through commendable and seemly conduct.” … I think of Simplicity and Decisiveness.  I think of that to which I am committed, personally and professionally.  I think of that which burns within, regardless of the direction of the winds of change.  I think of that which provides my best rudder.  I think of my sing-300x200commitment at heart to advance  character leadership and build inspired strength,  unity, resourcefulness and excellence at school, work, business and community.  I think of my love for speaking, dialoguing, training, facilitating, coaching, writing, singing, dancing, cartooning, gaming, and creating.  I think of the fact that I still have that; and I still believe.

So, given the winds of change, how can Simplicity and Decisiveness best help you find your true rudder, in service and in joy.  For me, I have my faith, my teaching, my work with Epic Engage™ and my love for music… and they are pure and goodly.

No Surrender

This is not about surrender (or even victory, if your vote was for Mr. Trump).  It is about using what you got, being resourceful and strong.  It is about finding yourself and your service or cause and your tribe, 1453404_10151988961536291_1339682863_nand riding it.  What do you still have this morning, for you, that is pure and goodly?  Find it.  Embrace it.  Follow it; and use it to serve, in joy.  Make this, whoever or wherever you are and however you voted or did not, your SaD Day.

We will all get there.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

broadCAST November 2016: Remember

The broadCAST™ is a monthly weigh in by members of The CAST™ of Epic Engage™.  Independent experts in their own right, members of The CAST™  are asked to answer a question of simple but possibly profound nature. We wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with these experts on their respective expertise and how it might be of service to you.  They each bring great value in service to their work.  With that in mind, this month and due to extreme scheduling, we hear from 6 of our wonderful 8… and the question for the month is:

Given your own special expertise, what is one thing you most want your audience to remember in leading their lives at work and/or in life?

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS…

Smile. It really IS that simple! There is magic in a smile. There are countless studies that show and prove the concept of ‘fake it til you make it’ works. But in this case, it isn’t fake, and the result is immediate. To borrow from Tony Robbins; if you were to stand with your feet spread apart, staring at the ceiling with a HUGE stupid grin on your face, it becomes nearly impossible for you to ‘get’ depressed. Imagine that – simply changing your physical state can have an impact on your emotional state. This same principal applies – and works – when you deliberately smile. There is more to the process, but it is NOT necessary to understand why it works, in order for it to work. So I strongly and cheerfully encourage you to SMILE! The life you change could very well be your own.  Cheers!

rayRay Hollister is all about strength, excellence and potential. In fact, he has a very special connection with students – he’s helped thousands achieve average scores of over 90% for 20 years! His love of learning… and his ability to teach anybody the same easy strategies he used to study far less than everyone else while maintaining outrageously high test scores… quickly earned him a lot of ‘friends’ seeking his advice. Ray has personally conducted numerous studies to develop an intense, focused, and  results oriented program for college students. With the success of that program, Ray set his sights on helping younger students in Junior High, High School, and those just entering University. The end result is a program that will help any student – especially YOU – learn more, study less, and earn consistently high grades.  www.rayhollister.net

JAMIE McCABE SAYS…

DING….is that an email from a customer or a FB message from a friend or customer? DING…did staff just text me with a question? DING, there it goes again. DING….what if it’s my daughter, she’s out right now driving. DING…it must be important.  In a world of technology, designed to keep us connected to everyone and everything… I can’t help but feel DISCONNECTED at times to the ones that matter the most. Am I being present when my kids, husband or friends are talking to me? DING.  One of my happy places is at my children’s events. The phone gets turned off. No one can call or text me. I am living in the moment. How can we live more in the moment? By giving the gift of presence. My best conversations are held when my phone isn’t around or turned off. This quiet disconnected time is also very important for work to keep you focused, on task and it opens up room for conversations with people you may not have come across before and can create great opportunities for growth both personally and professionally.   At Clay Cafe, I encourage people to embrace the moments by putting down your phone and picking up a paint brush; creating moments with a friend or child that will last a lifetime. In 15 years when you look up at that hand painted piece, it takes you back to a moment in time and you relive that moment againJM2 when you spent 2 hrs with someone special painting it. Remember how you both laughed and marveled in the beauty of what was hand made. These are the connections we need to be making now, not to the internet. Connect to what really matters during work and family life. When we allow these moments to happen, it reminds us how much we all need human connections and conversations in our day to day life. Take time today to focus on what is truly important to you. One of my favorite quotes is by Tony Robbins. “Life is made up of moments, you can either choose to create them or hope they show up every once in awhile.” Turn that phone off and create those moments.

Jamie McCabe is all about creativity and connection. She is on a mission to bring people together through art and exploring their creative side at Clay Café Avalon. Jamie became an entrepreneur and opened the paint-your-own pottery studio in 2008 and has seen many memories painted there since then. She works with children and schools where she provides after school art programs. She believes we should color outside the lines more and embrace our inner artist. At Clay Café, it’s not about painting the perfect piece, it’s about painting the perfect memory.  www.claycafeavalon.ca

JOEL SWEENEY SAYS….

For me, here it is.  “What we do is of little significance, but it is very important that we do it.”  Many people believe that their contribution at work or life in general is not important in the grand scheme of things. It DOES make a difference. We don’t always know what impact our contribution had on work, community, family, friends and even total strangers. We can’t allow ourselves to become complacent.  My signature keynote is titled “Make Your Voice Heard”.  I believe we can make our voice heard in a variety of ways. The most important way to make our voice heard is to make our contribution and make sure it is done to the best of our ability. That contribution could require a significant effort or could be Joel-Sweeney-291x300as simple as being a good listener. Whatever it is, make the contribution.  Oral communications is my area of expertise and I have seen how effective it can be when done properly. It can deliver clarity on what needs to be done and how to do it.  Each of us has something to contribute. Good oral communication skills allow us to share our expertise and insights with others. Don’t forget to share your knowledge. Speak up and make your voice heard.  All the Best … Joel

Joel Sweeney is all about effective communications. He has been speaking, training, coaching and writing about it for over 20 years. He is the author of The Wedding MC Handbook and Little Helpings of Food for Thought. His third book, The Speaker’s Tool Box – Perfecting the Craft of Speaking, was released in the 2015. He is the owner of Professionally Speaking (established in 1995). Joel helps entrepreneurs and business professional become effective, engaging and confident speakers. www.JoelSweeney.com

MARK BLACK SAYS….

Here you go:  “Life is Supposed to be Hard”.  Have you had a hard day? A tough week? Take heart. You are not experiencing anything to be concerned about. It’s normal. That may come as little consolation, but it should.  Life is supposed to be hard. If your life is always smooth and easy, you are probably playing it too safe.  If you can learn to accept the fact that your life is supposed to be difficult, and stop resisting adversity, your life will be much better. Ironically, by straining to make our lives easier, we make them even harder. So rather than striving for easy, learn to thrive amidst adversity.

MARK BLACK, CSP is all about wellness and resilience.  He is a Heart blackand Double-Lung Transplant Recipient, 4-time marathoner, resilience expert, speaker, and coach. Three years later, after receiving his second chance at life, Mark ran his first marathon. Mark spends his free time with his beautiful wife and two kids.  www.markblack.ca

SHEENA GROBB SAYS….

I would say the one thing I would want my audience to remember in leading their lives at work and/or in life…  Is that it takes courage to follow your heart with a high integrity… because the path of the heart is strewn with potential road blocks, and misperceptions, and hidden fears.  Always. But it is courage that will lead you through all that threatens your vision.  To fear… is to not yet understand.  Courage is learning to make friends with that which you at one time you only feared.  Courage is the beginning of every real transformation.

Sheena Grobb Singer/Songwriter and Speaker… is humbly amazing. “It is without a doubt a masterpiece of songwriting and soundscape. Really incredible, soulful music. She will definitely get a huge audience in time, trust me.” Alex Wharton, Abbey Road Studios. A songbird from the age of two, songwriter at ten, with 3 albums under her belt, a nomination for the Western Canadian Music Awards, Sheenaand over 500 tour dates across Canada, the US, and the UK, Sheena Grobb (one of Canada’s best kept secrets) is spilling over. With the release of her newest album, The Breakless Heart, mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, and a life changing music video created by Lindsey Nelko (past choreographer with So You Think You Can Dance), Sheena is embarking on her most meaningful project yet – The Living Compassion Project™ – inviting others to “unlock their lives” through sharing their stories… as she begins to share hers. www.sheenagrobb.com

BARRY LEWIS GREEN SAYS…

This week has been a lesson and a reminder… for me.  The teacher has been the virtue of Simplicitymuriel4Last night I conducted one of my AFTER SCHOOL sessions on Facebook Live… all about simplicity.  It seems to be a recurring theme for me this past month in particular.  Stick to the knittin’.  Be true to yourself.  And on October 29, I wrote of meeting this incredible woman in a session that I did for a wonderful elder community and staff.  Throughout my now 35+ years in leadership, training and development… I have been consistently reminded of the power of Simplicity.  It breeds Grace and Excellence.  Being in the moment caused that magical moment with Muriel.  It served in my years with Dale Carnegie  Training® and with The Virtues Project™… and as a business educator.  Be in the freakin’ moment.  Roll with it.  Flow over drive; ride the wave.  These are the notions that are reminding me.  Excellence in our work and play… manifested in both how well we do and how well we experience our lives… is born of Simplicity practiced.

Simply SMASHing…

Last evening, I conducted this chat on Facebook Live.  It centered on balancing Helpfulness and Responsibility… and explored some possibly new understandings of Responsibility as a strength of character. The message was around health and sustainability and service, balancing these two strengths.

Then this morning, I saw this on the Cubs winning the 2016 World Series… after having last won in 1907 and 1908… some 108 years of trying in between.

In tandem, these two videos are causing me to reflect on a virtue that is growing in attention this year… Simplicity.  With books like Keep It Simple by Joe Calloway and Essentialism by Greg McKeown, this strength of focus and purpose is gaining traction amidst a sea of competing demands and interests seemingly nipping at us and dragging us in a myriad of directions.

You do not win the World Series without such a focus.

So, tonight on AFTER SCHOOL on Facebook Live right here, I will be exploring Simplicity as strength through a 4 step process I call SMASH™.  Hope you join us.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
