Unity Packs a Powerful Punch

Check this out ahead of the Packers-Bears on Thursday Night Football.  Within, you will find a statement from the Green Bay Packers that reads…

The NFL family is one of the most diverse communities in the world. Just look around! The eclectic group of players that you root for, the coaches you admire, the people you sit next to in the stands, those high-fiving on military bases, fans at the sports bar or during tailgate parties — we all come from different walks of life and have unique backgrounds and stories.

The game of football brings people together. As NFL players, we are a living testimony that individuals from different backgrounds and with different life experiences can work together toward a common goal.

This Thursday during the national anthem at Lambeau Field, Packers players, coaches and staff will join together with arms intertwined — connected like the threads on your favorite jersey. When we take this action, what you will see will be so much more than just a bunch of football players locking arms. The image you will see on September 28th will be one of unity. It will represent a coming together of players who want the same things that all of us do — freedom, equality, tolerance, understanding, and justice for those who have been unjustly treated, discriminated against or otherwise treated unfairly. You will see the sons of police officers, kids who grew up in military families, people who have themselves experienced injustice and discrimination firsthand, and an array of others all linking together in a display of unity.

Those of us joining arms on Thursday will be different in so many ways, but one thing that binds us together is that we are all individuals who want to help make our society, our country and our world a better place. We believe that in diversity there can be UNI-versity. Intertwined, we represent the many people who helped build this country, and we are joining together to show that we are ready to continue to build.

Let’s work together to build a society that is more fair and just.

Join us this Thursday by locking arms with whoever you’re with, stranger or loved one, wherever you are — intertwined and included — in this moment of unification.”

– The Packers Players

Vince Lombardi once said…

Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.

Now, consider the message…

Diverse communities… bringing people together… different backgrounds… common goals… images of unity… freedom, equality, tolerance, understanding, and justice for those who have been unjustly treated, discriminated against or otherwise treated unfairly…  helping make our society, country and world a better place…. believing that in diversity there can be UNI-versity. … working together … for a society that is more fair and just…. and in this moment of unification.

Accept and Move Forward

We just posted some thoughts on Acceptance and Creativity.  Acceptance enables us to see things for what and where and when they are; in order for us to know our starting point.  Knowing that starting point allows us to map our path forward.

And a willingness to learn is rooted in Acceptance… being open.

How might this help you in the classroom, at work, in business or in your community?  What would Acceptance look like?  How would you practice it?  What would be the return on your investment in doing so?  Reflect and map it out.  Then act on it.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

The Strength of Courtesy

A couple of days ago, I posted our 400th LinkedIn blog post… on the leadership strength that is Courtesy… as part of a new series called Pandamonium.  In it, I offered the Virtues Reflection Card for Courtesy and offered some starting thoughts.  I invite you to have a good read and reflect.

Courtesy is mannered and shows others that we respect and value them.  We treat others graciously; making requests over demands.  But even when we must command, we do so with honor.  It is not unlike the Jedi Way.  🙂  In so doing, we listen and attend to people attentively; especially our intimates… but our customers, colleagues and constituencies… all in all.  We walk with a countenance of respect, honor and grace that is powerful and quietly remarkable.  People will remark on it, for they feel truly valued.  Trust is earned and trustworthiness is advanced.  It is an honorable investment.

A great read for advancing the needle on this strength is How to Win Friends and Influence People; a classic by Dale Carnegie.  I understand that British Airways called it the best business book of the 20th Century.  Read it, and again… and again.  The wisdom is simple and profound and effective.  The title can be off-putting but the content is rich and wise; and much is about Courtesy.  I humbly recommend it as one of my top five favorite leadership books of all time.

Courtesy; Panda lives this quality.  I learn from her every day, on how to practice same.  And I have learned from her that we can practice this quality with ourselves; being courteous to our own beingThese past few days, I have been gutting, cleaning and simplifying… inspired by the work on Essentialism.  What became quickly apparent was a new funky working studio for my creativity I now call the Fox Hole.

It feels good to value ourselves, and it might just open up new venues of thought, will and action.  As we do so, we better understand this strength with others.

How would it look for you… manifested at school, work, business or community? How would you or do you walk and talk to live this strength of character and leadership?  Where do you most need now to move the needle on its practice.

Do that.  The world, locally and globally, needs it.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

broadCAST September 2017: Joy, Joy, Joy

The broadCAST™ is a monthly weigh in by members of The CAST™ of Epic Engage™.  Independent experts in their own right, members of The CAST™  have an opportunity to share their earned insights right here, for you, each month.  With that in mind, we wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with these experts on their respective expertise and how it might be of service to you.  They each bring such great value in service to their respective work.

September 2017

As we head back into a Fall pace… back to school or work at the refreshed groove… the question for The CAST™ in September is…

Why is joy important and how do you find it?

Given the pace of getting back at things and new openings going on… Jamie, Sheena and Mark could not join us this month and we miss them truly, but our 6 other CASTers have something to say on joy.  The responses follow.  Engage and enjoy. 🙂

SHEENA GROBB SINGS

That being said, while Sheena could not join us this month, I personally thought to offer up this amazing song and video called Good Fortune.  The line within … and I am aware of my good fortune, like it is humming in my ear … it powerfully speaks to joy and joyfulness.  IMHO, it speaks to the question of the month.  Listen and ponder for yourself.  Thank you Sheena for your artistry and insight. — BLG

Sheena Grobb Singer/Songwriter and Speaker… is humbly amazing. “It is without a doubt a masterpiece of songwriting and soundscape. Really incredible, soulful music. She will definitely get a huge audience in time, trust me.” Alex Wharton, Abbey Road Studios. A songbird from the age of two, songwriter at ten, with 3 albums under her belt, a nomination for the Western Canadian Music Awards, Sheenaand over 500 tour dates across Canada, the US, and the UK, Sheena Grobb (one of Canada’s best kept secrets) is spilling over. With the release of her newest album, The Breakless Heart, mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, and a life changing music video created by Lindsey Nelko (past choreographer with So You Think You Can Dance), Sheena is embarking on her most meaningful project yet – The Living Compassion Project™ – inviting others to “unlock their lives” through sharing their stories… as she begins to share hers. www.sheenagrobb.com

RAY HOLLISTER SAYS

I have written before about the power of using a habit you already have to brighten your day. That habit is the ability to worry about an event that hasn’t happened, IN ADVANCE! However, in this case, I am suggesting that you turn this habit into a ‘skill’ by shifting the pattern slightly. The truth is simply, yet profound: it IS just as easy to be happy/joyful/hopeful about something that hasn’t happened yet as it is to be worried/fearful/angry about something that hasn’t happened yet. It is all a matter of your FOCUS. I believe that the importance of Joy is self-evident. What is less obvious is how to consistently bring it into your life. For me, I have cultivated the habit of focusing on all the ways things could go RIGHT. By focusing on the good things, the positive things, the joyful things, and the humorous things, I am far more successful at bringing those things to life, than by focusing on all the ways things could go wrong. I don’t agree with the idea that focusing on the negative is being ‘realistic’. I mark a distinct difference between being prepared and being scared. I strongly encourage you to try this for a full week: deliberately and thoughtfully focus on all the ways things could go RIGHT during your day. Deliberately and thoughtfully focus on all the reasons you could be joyful that day. You may be very pleasantly surprised at how easy it really is to find joy every day!

LIZ BURT SAYS

Joy is something I have been thinking a lot about lately actually. For me, joy comes from simple things in life and is a connection to my truest self and inner child. I get huge joy from riding my bicycle, swimming, and having a good hard laugh with my closest friends. Joy comes from sleeping in on a Saturday morning and then enjoying that first cup of coffee in the sunshine on my patio. Joy comes from cruising out in my dad’s fishing boat to have an evening jig at sunset – aka the “salt water joys”! Joy comes from quality time spent with family and loved ones. Pure joy is deeper for me than happiness. It’s a feeling deep inside the soul that cannot be faked or manufactured. Joy is one of the ultimate REAL FEELS!  Joy is so important to me because it has the ability to slow time down a little in my sometimes busy, hectic life and it connects me to simple things that mean the most. Real feelings of joy remind me to be grateful for the little things. True feelings of joy keep me grounded and humble and focused on being grateful for all the good there is in my life.

Liz Burt is about real and healthy results.  She is a master motivator. She is also a marathoner and marketing specialist living in Calgary, AB. She holds a three-year diploma in Business Management and Marketing, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, and will begin her MA at the University of Alberta this spring. In addition to being wild about learning and running, Liz is also an avid traveller and has backpacked through twenty countries in the last few years. In her professional life she loves working with small businesses to develop simple and effective marketing and communications plans that achieve real results. She is creative, a bit of a health nut and loves to share her healthy passions in her blog. Liz is a goal setter and risk taker. She loves coffee, cooking, and great conversations. She gets huge joy in helping people and small businesses achieve their goals and are always ready to lend an ear and share advice. lizburt.wordpress.com

TRENT LANGDON SAYS

One piece of advice as we shift back into school, schedules, and routine – strategically allow it to unfold. The expectations that we place upon ourselves and our children, to jump headfirst into the rat race, can be overwhelming for all. There will be summer withdrawal no doubt, but allow the transition to happen by giving plenty of preparation time for events and schedule ample down time. Viewing the start of the school year as a chance to initiate new ideas and opportunities can allow for a positive start for the entire family.

Trent Langdon is all about building legacy through character education and development. He is a junior high school counselor for 650+ adolescents and is dedicated to serving his students, their families, and communities.  Trent works on behalf of his colleagues to build identity, protect professional roles, and to give teachers ‘a voice’; currently completing his 2nd term as a member of the Provincial Executive Council of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA) and now as the incoming NLTA Vice-President for the 2017-2019 term of office. Trent is also a Canadian Certified Counselor with the Canadian Counseling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and serves as a member of the CCPA Ethics Committee (Complaints Division).  And last but certainly not least, Trent is a proud contributor to the Epic Engage team. www.epicengage.com

JAMIE McCABE SAYS

Jamie is crazy, cool and joyfully busy with the opening of her new location for the Clay Café.   We have already been there and it is awesome!  Last month, Jamie shared… “What inspires me is helping others. I love seeing people smile and enjoying life. I enjoy talking with our customers and getting to know them and creating a connection.”   That, is abundantly clear… we have experienced it first hand.  With that in mind, we congratulate Jamie on the new digs and the joy she brings to her work.   See you next month Jamie!

JM2Jamie McCabe is all about creativity and connection. She is on a mission to bring people together through art and exploring their creative side at Clay Café Avalon. BARRY LEWIS GREEN SAYS

One of my favourite quotes is “Joy gives us wings! In times of joy our strength is more vital, our intellect keener, and our understanding less clouded. We seem better able to cope with the world and to find our sphere of usefulness.” The question is how do we practice the virtue that is Joyfulness.  Joyfulness is a way of being, beyond being happy about something.   In video, here are some thoughts I want to share on that thing called joy…. enJOY. 🙂

Barry Lewis Green is ultimately a vocalist, strength coach and educator. His work is about voicing, exploring, identifying, practicing and mastering our strengths and building upon them through practical and powerful unity and resourcefulness.  His book Human Being Being Being Human speaks to that.  and that is why Barry is The Unity Guy™. EPIC Engage™ is an extension of The Unity Guy™. And We’re Off

And a kind of new era begins.  Over this past Summer, we have sharpened the blades on the focus of our work.  With Fall approaching and as our website now begins, we lay claim that:

Great education is great leadership.  Great leadership is great education.  Epic Engage™ is a training and development company with a global vision of working with educators, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders to:

  • educate and lead with high character, strength and joyful excellence.
  • unite strong cultures of diversity and fully engaged purpose, talent and capacity.
  • inspire dynamic learning cultures of flourishing passion, creativity, growth and prosperity.

We changed our logo… to represent our spirit and mission in doing so.

There is something special and powerful about horses running together.  Movement, spirit, drive and passion… united.  We help move the needle on that.

We have launched the second edition of The Leaducator Expereience™.  We are about to launch our 400th LinkedIn blog post this week… with currently 4860 followers for our body of work on LI. Humbly appreciated. 🙂

EDUCATE. LEAD. UNITE. INSPIRE.

That is our focus.  It is what we look to share in our monthly broadCAST™ … and in Leader ToC™.  Our work is about moving forward together, stronger.  We contend that character educates, leads, unites and inspires.  That is the kind of leadership that we are all about…. and helping campuses, companies, communities and conferences get there.

COURAGE and FOCUS

This week, we offered a layered series of posts on Courage, Sacrifice and finding what we call your KAST and fierce focus.  We invite you to read and engage.  Finding your focus, demands Courage.  We have practiced it such this Summer; and continue to do so.

CHARACTER DAY

First, I invite you to view and listen here.  But, more so, we invite you to engage Character Day September 13, tomorrow as of this writing.  Engage in a conversation around character.  In my classes tomorrow, I intend to do just that.  Character is the soil from which great behaviour and action is born.  It unites, inspires and engages.  Tomorrow, I suggest:

  • have a conversation with students about their favourite fictional characters or favourite musical artists.  Have a dialogue on the strengths of character they admire in them.
  • have a conversation with a friend not simply of the woes of the world… but what strengths of character are needed to help address those woes.
  • have a dialogue at work on what strengths of character you most wish to be known for as an organization.
  • watch this video.
  • or this one.
  • or thiiiiiis one.
  • Maybe this one too.
  • Oh and this little ditty.
  • or these speeches of Aragorn or Neville or JFK.

Start the conversation around character.  It matters.  Going forward, that is our fierce focus; to advance character as the strength to educate, lead, unite and inspire.  We need it, locally and globally.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

FROM TRENT

THE CLOSER

‘The Closer’; a title often earned in business circles describing that person who can ‘seal the deal’, drive home an idea, finish the project on time, handle the high-profile situations, or bring the team to the next level. Such a valuable skill set to have but yet, heavy on responsibility and pressure (whether it be self or group-induced).

  • Are you that staff person in your professional setting?
  • Do you know that individual in your family or professional environment?
  • Are you forced into playing this role?
  • Do you have a desire to become that person?

_____________________________

A case study for your thoughts…

‘The Closer’ – Roberto Osuna [Pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays; 27 Saves & an Earned Run Average of 2.80 (to date) in the 2017 season]

In an atypical, yet extremely brave move for a professional athlete, Roberto offered the following comments to a reporter in late July…

“I really don’t know how to explain it. I just feel anxious. I feel like I’m lost a little bit right now,”

“This has nothing to do with me being on the field. I feel great out there. It’s just when I’m out of baseball, when I’m not on the field, that I feel just weird and a little bit lost.”

“I wish I knew how to get out of this, but we’re working on it, trying to find ways to see what can make me feel better,” he said. “But, to be honest, I just don’t know.”

       (ESPN.com news services, June 24th, 2017)

So…what were your immediate thoughts on reading these comments from a well-paid, highly-touted, professional athlete in such a high stakes role?  Thoughts?

  • In the competitive world of the professional sporting business, this disclosure will certainly affect his effectiveness on the mound.
  • It will definitely impact his marketability as a closer for other teams that may have an interest.
  • His teammates will have less faith in his mental toughness during the critical times he is called into action.
  • It will undoubtedly impact his intimidation factor for the opponent.
  • He will have a short career if he is experiencing such adversity at such an early age.

I am sure these and many other thoughts crossed the minds of Blue Jays fans, other teams, sports reporters, Blue Jays management, as well as casual onlookers to the sport. It is apparent however that he is receiving the necessary supports to deal with his ongoing battle with anxiety.

But what Roberto has done here is simply lay himself out there. A move that, whether intentional or not, was highly sincere and genuine, from a person in need of support.

He has stated that when he is on the mound, he is able to place his anxiety ‘on the shelf’ and he is able to focus on the challenge at hand. Not an uncommon situation for a person who experiences ‘high-functioning’ anxiety and relies on routine to keep things in order. Your staff or group of employees may have an individual who has openly disclosed  similar difficulties.

So what can be taken away?

  • Roberto has lent his face as a popular and credible face of anxiety.
  • We will have to wait and see if his comments will influence his treatment from other parties.
  • Life goes on for Roberto and for the millions of others that struggle to keep the anxiety demons at bay, while leading highly productive lives.
  • It can hit any one of us at any stage; it may also present itself in many forms.
  • We will always have our ‘secret-keepers’ who will keep their cards ‘close to their chests’ regarding their struggles.
  • We must minimize the impacts by offering workspaces that allow for wellness activities, reasonable expectations, and the possibility for open dialogue.
  • When identified, there must be clear treatment options and access to services such as employee assistance programs and counselling insurance coverage.
  • Mental health promotion and stress reduction must be built into educational curricula for students as well as amateur athletes and young professionals.
  • It is a highly personal decision to share this information. Individuals should not feel forced into sharing their struggles with the public or their employer to legitimize it however, we need to ensure that private supports exist.

To those leaders (and closers) out there struggling quietly with anxiety, respect yourself for the decision to keep this a private issue for yourself. You have the right to do so. But let’s respect others out there that have decided to go public with their own personal battle as a means of invoking change and finding individual supports for themselves.

I had the pleasure of seeing Roberto in action this summer, not long after his public disclosure, and he did not disappoint.

Thanks Roberto, for contributing to the normalization of anxiety in our lives and that we are all surprisingly mortal.

Quite simply, Barry absolutely captivated us with his talent, his message, and his heart.  The feeling of unity that Barry created in the room that day was extraordinary.”  Barry’s book Human Being Being Being Human speaks to that.  and that is why Barry is The Unity Guy™. EPIC Engage™ is an extension of The Unity Guy™. The Epic work is all about building strong, united and inspired cultures lead by character… at school, work and community; where everyone matters and contributes everyday.  Barry is humbly proud to advance this work with Trent and The Leaducator Experience™.
