NOW: November Reign

Last week, I wrote on Optimist Primed and Ready.  I think it worth a read and reflect.  For me. 🙂  I also wrote on my 3 Cents on Leadership.  Another reread for me.  I need to reread and reflect… and munch on these yet again.

This week has been eventful.  With work on the new Epic Speakernet™ we are launching and my full slate of work, there have been successes indeed; milestones in the making.  But this week has also tested Optimism.  That being said, Optimism is up to it.

Optimism is not about ignoring problems.  It is not about avoiding the negative.  It is about recognizing the good, the bad and the ugly… and knowing “we got this”.  That requires a range of virtues including Detachment, Patience, Faith, Trust, Determination, Steadfastness, Flexibility, Endurance, Forbearance, Fortitude, Courage, Resilience, Integrity and more.  I say this because virtues are latent within us.  They but need practice.  Practice makes permanent.

Back on September 26, it was world Character Day.  I love the fact that there is a recognition of its importance, and the need for it in this world.  We need character every day.  That requires, nay demands, practice.  If you have ever wished or prayed for more patience, I suggest two things.  First, don’t be surprised if the world gives you an opportunity to practice it.  Second, you do not simply receive Patience.  You practice it.  You work at it, like any craft.

Every virtue is latent within us, in potential.  To develop them, we need practice them.  We practice Acceptance and Confidence and Joyfulness.  We practice Strength and Unity.  Practice makes permanent and we are building a deeper understanding and mastery of a virtue as we become it’s student.  Character matters; and it requires work.

So, yes… this week tested my Optimism.  But, that is the point.  It remains within me.  It always has.  Indeed and now, its access is strengthened.  I am even better at putting it into practice now.  I have always found it a natural virtue for me but now I understand a deeper dive on it.  Optimism shines in the face of trial.

So, for November, I am running a very personal journey called November Reign.  I will spend the next 30 days working on my vision with a fierce and defiant Optimism.  I will own it.  It will be my reign.  Actually, and more specifically, it will be a reign of Nobility, Optimism and Wholeheartedness (NOW).  I will be the poster child for being a student of these three… Nobility in seeing and honoring the best in life, Optimism in living it, and Wholeheartedness in the energy I bring to it.  I will live my slightly and newly updated 20022020 vision of…

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and more of what and who I love.  My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all.  I am teaching business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and doing my global work of Epic Engage™. I am loving it!  I am 110K in weight (slim for my body structure) and benching same; healthy and strong. And, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.

… as if it already has manifested.  It has.  I will walk this month fired up with the practice of Nobility, Optimism, and Wholeheartedness strengthened by Certitude.

More specifically, for November…

  • I will walk as a student of character
  • I will learn the very basics of conversational Mandarin
  • I will prayerfully engage in my Ruhi studies
  • I will sing, write, and live with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda
  • I will teach business leadership at college and do my thing with Epic Engage™
  • I will eat “more than right” and walk daily.

I will.  I will listen to The Hero Within… and a slate of Shinedown tunes like I Dare You… they are my band after all … and Wake Up … and more.  I will listen to MY music, not in some superficial pumping up kind of way … but to feed my soul.  I will reinforce the insatiable hunger for Optimism that already resides within.

I am inviting you to join me on November Reign.  It requires nothing but to take on your battle cry. Where do you need to BRING IT this month?  I mean bring it.  What do you need to do this month that will send one big cool ball hurtling into motion?

Yes, this week has had cool and great moments and conversations; and it has had walls to climb.  Yeah, Optimism is practiced.  It is built, with work.  It shines greatest when tested.  It shines greatest when we deal with the walls.  These times in which we live are a test.  But Optimism is up for it.  I am too.  How about you?

Peace, passion and prosperity.

OPTIMIST PRIMED and READY

This past week has been eventful from … flu to fierce work; from trial to triumph.  Last week, I published this on An Invitation to Bucket.   Among other things, I noted a vision for my 60th birthday, February 20, 2020 (20022020) that went…

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love.

It covers 5 “buckets” of my own choosing.  As noted last week “I have opted to combine mine down to 5.

  • Educational, which will include my MBa, Mandarin, French and even spiritual
  • Joyful… which will include emotional, and inspirational
  • Work and Service… including vocational, and social
  • Physical… my health
  • WEALTH… including material and financial”

Yes, EDUCATION, JOY, WORK and SERVICE, HEALTH and WEALTH are my core buckets as I work towards that vision; as I live it even now.  Since crafting that vision, I have been following through and learning along the way.  Indeed, I have recorded thoughts in:

Ultimately, what I am hearing has to do with what I call the Fortitudinal Virtues… Strength, Discipline, Certitude, Trustworthiness and more… and the power that Optimism has in fueling same.

  • Helen Keller said, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
  • Colin Powell said, “Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.”
  • Lucille Ball said, “One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.”
  • Martin Seligman said, “Positive thinking is the notion that if you think good thoughts, things will work out well. Optimism is the feeling of thinking things will be well and be hopeful.”
  • In a prayer I love, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá said, “O God!  Refresh and gladden my spirit.  Purify my heart.  Illumine my powers.  I lay all my affairs in Thy hand.  Thou art my Guide and my Refuge.  I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved; I will be a happy and joyful being. O God!  I will no longer be full of anxiety, nor will I let trouble harass me.  I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life.
O God!  Thou art more friend to me than I am to myself.”

John F. Kennedy had it.  Indeed and amongst my earliest memories of his funeral at 3 years of age, I remember the sadness … and the optimism that he engendered in a generation.

We need that again.

I want to be part of that.

I intend to be.  I am, already.

Fiercely and humbly so.

I have another 485 days left.  This is my Everest climb, minus the physical dangers.  But the view at the 20022020 will be spectacular, if I but climb every day.  That requires character.  That requires the truest form of Optimism.  I will bring it.

My suggestion is that you ponder Optimism.  You explore it.  You process it.  You own it.  Then rise up.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

A Lesson More Deeply

Yesterday, on Day 11, I posted this on Practicing Determination.  This morning, I am realizing a deeper appreciation of same.

Getting clear and committed is a dance.  Clarity requires Commitment and Commitment requires Clarity.  Both are virtues.  Both require Courage; another virtue.  The focus and follow through that comes from such is palpable.  Until and unless one gets so clear and committed, Determination is without focus.  And yet, to determine something is to get clear and committed. Hmmmmm….

Do you see where I am going?  This is a one ball.  Clarity and Commitment are determined through truthful and courageous consideration.  Once determined, they forge the foundation for Determination.

The reflection continues, but this morning I am ever more aware of the organic nature of Determination, Clarity and Commitment; and the importance of exploring and practicing them all.  This one life we know we have demands it. And it is a truly personal choice.  With my recent five buckets statement for 20022020 (my 60th birthday) in mind…

My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all.  I am teaching business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and doing my global work of Epic Engage™. ,,, I am ever more aware of this dance and its importance for these coming days, weeks and months.  How about you?  For what can you practice true Determination?

Peace, passion and prosperity.

An Invitation to Bucket

In my return to Barry’s Blog last week, I wrote on Too Long and Too Much and Thanksgiving. Amidst this past weekend, I had a personal a-ha and it resulted in LinkedIn posts on a 500 day journey towards my 60th birthday.  Just this morning, I wrote on Commitment and Day 2.  I have long been about exploring character and building healthy unity.  The a-ha serves both.  All of that is to say, I am now extending an invitation to you and yours to walk with me on the journey.  If you decide so, discern on your buckets of interest.  I call them the ALs, as they all end in “al”.  🙂

  • Spiritual… your spiritual, soulful life
  • Emotional… relationships and love
  • Material… the stuff
  • Physical… your health
  • Financial… things money
  • Educational… what you intend to study and learn and master
  • Vocational… work, service and calling
  • Social… contributions to community
  • Inspirational… the joyful for you

Even this morning I have updated a little.  I have opted to combine mine down to 5.

  • Educational, which will include my MBa, Mandarin, French and even spiritual
  • Joyful… which will include emotional, and inspirational
  • Work and Service… including vocational, and social
  • Physical… my health
  • WEALTH… including material and financial

My five buckets statement to be filled by 20022020 (my 60th birthday) goes like this:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love.

Those are my five for Fidelity (promise kept) and Commitment (follow through).  You need not choose 5 buckets.  Choose one, if that calls to you.  But, here is the thing.  Whenever you join the journey, we set our sights on 20022020, to have a cool, funky online celebration.  Imagine the feeling.  Join me.  I hope you do.  I dare you to…

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Thanks Giving?

This weekend is Thanksgiving in Canada.  But, we run those words together too often without thinking upon their meaning.  Some questions I suggest you ponder this weekend include for what and whom are you thankful, what is about those people, places, things and ideas that cause you to be thankful, and have you articulated and expressed such specifics to them?

For what are you thankful?  To whom are you thankful?  What causes you to be so?  These are important questions.  Expressing the answers to those people, or to a higher power… is important.  One exercise I like that helps to get more clear on thanks is to explore your own Ikigai.  Ask yourself what do you love and what are you good at doing?  This is the first half of your Ikigai and gets you listing “the good”.

A second activity is to take this list of 101 virtues and think of the people, places, things and ideas for which you are thankful… and attribute the why to aspects of their character.  How do they make you feel?  What states of being do they illicit?

If you want a copy of either, please let me know.

Spending time in thanks requires us to ponder that for which we are truly thankful.  Sincerity of thanks is more important than shoulding ourselves on thanks.  Find one thing for which to be truly thankful and sink your soul into that.  Then build upon it.

In the classroom and on campus, for what are you thankful?  In business, for what are you feeling thankfulness?  As a leader, what brings out such feeling?  As a student? As a parent?  For what are you sincerely grateful?  For what do you genuinely give thanks?  Have you given it?

Tell the people who need to hear.

That is thanks GIVING.

Too Long and Too Much

TOO LONG

It has been way to long.  August 22 was my last post on Barry’s Blog.  Life both got in and out of the way.  I consciously and even unconsciously decided to step back and even stream line. I had to get back to what was important.  I had to re-center and align with the global goals as they relate to this soul.   That was good and needed.  But, now it has been way too long.  Now, it is time to get back on the horses.

TOO MUCH

Part of the problem was that I realized that there was way too much.  Even today, I came across this post on the power of simplicity in discerning and deciding how we ride.  I invite you to have a read.  Simplicity is a virtue; and one of focus.  As we carve away the unnecessary, we find the paramount.  For me, these past few months have been such a journey.  The result is that in the coming days, significant but simple changes will be made to this very site, and the focus of my work; education.

“Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.”  These words, ring and resonate within my spirit, and through every cell in my body.  They remind me that I know.

I KNOW

I know that I choose to serve world embracing educators and entrepreneurs; those who want and intend to make the world better in the classroom and in business.  Get rich quick is not my interest.  Legacy in education and entrepreneurship is.

I know I want to work with world embracing and emerging leaders… socially conscious youth and community activants who want to powerfully and practically change the world.

I know that I want to do that through my teaching, speaking and coaching.  I know I want to do that by exploring character leadership and unity building.  I know that I want to deliver on that through speaking, singing and a myriad of modalities.  I know. I do.

I know that I am an educator and that it is my life’s work.

And, I know that everything requires everything and to be ready, I must do the work.

THEN, IT GOT MORE CLEAR

Then, last Friday, we had our first ever lockdown at College.  Oh, yes we did.  Without going into detail now, I also now know at a much more palpable level that I want to be physically strong and healthy to do this work.  Indeed, at a session I facilitated this past Tuesday with the Single Parent Association (my twentieth year doing pro bono work for that wonderful organization)… and one with the Atlantic Halfway House Association the week before… I found myself articulating same.  The carriage must support the rider.  The body must effectively sustain and carry the mind and heart.

Ultimately, there is a new simplicity here.  No plans nor goals are at the core here.  What is at core is a simple understanding is that this horse needs to be healthy to run with the other horses.  In so doing, much of what my heart and mind deeply seeks to achieve will be served and reached.

Where do you need to go for less over more?  Where do you need to simplify and focus?  How can you get essential?  Your life may already be way too much for way too long.  It may be time to choose and prioritize.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
