Our Own Script

Last week, I shared on Apathy, Fear and Responsibility, somewhat unknowingly ahead of considerable developments on the COVID-19 front. Yesterday, I posted this on doing and achieving through this time in which we find ourselves.

All of that is to say that I am starting my own journey of self isolation and homeworking, and thought to do daily posts of motivation, music, memes and more that will can possibly educate and entertain and engage. It will incorporate my regular LinkedIN posts… and these weekly blogs, plus more. It will be a place to find resources and recharge, for me and us all, should you choose to engage.

For now, here are several legit resources:

Here is another great resource, a classic from Dale Carnegie on How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, an all time fave of mine. Here is classic audio on it. Here is a summary. And a summary audio/video. And, here you can purchase it.

Oh… and here is my new fave album by Andy Grammer, listening to now. 🙂

I am treating these days like the writing of a movie script; a heroic one. Join me in creating your own. We got this. This is Day One.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

A New Saga Begins

Last week, we clued up the Benny and Jarry Blog run (at least for now). We posted on Love and Peace Out. It has been an enjoyable run with Jenny and she will be contributing to The broadCAST going forward. I look forward to her insights. Thank you Jenny. <3

And Now

That being said, and after my recent birthday, I have been reflecting on the path forward for this hombre. Of late, I have blogged on LinkedIn on Purpose and Story… on Love and Metaphor and Candor and owning, expressing and bringing it.

Most recently, I posted on rolling the dice and how good do you want it and wishes no more… finishing off these last couple of days with initial thoughts on creative excellence and premise, promise and precipice.

All of that is to say that (a) my blogging is somewhat randomly inspired by thoughts at a given moment and (b) when I look back upon posts, I am not sure how “random” they actually are.

These last posts are speaking to me of something of a birthday hangover in the best of ways. They are speaking to me of “Now What?“. Now that I have reached this arbitrary number of 60, not having a clue what that even freakin’ remotely means, what is my Soul screaming to me in a whisper?

A New Saga

I looooooooove this song. Truly. And that word, Saga…. love it too. For me, a new saga unfolds. More than a new chapter. A new story. The educator and entrepreneur in me knows it. The speaker, trainer, facilitator and coach knows it. The singer, dancer, writer and cartoonist knows it. The very amateur boxer and archer knows it. The boy, guy and man does too.

Silos to Synergy

This next saga will be less about silos and more about synergy. It will be less about small and more about big; not in some grandiose way, but in a way where ideas are more freely and even wisely manifested… all centering on my deep belief in and passion for character leadership and unity building.

It will mean working with people who are world embracing and noble hearted. It will mean honoring the spirit of Professor Hattenauer.

And JFK.

It will mean choosing my projects and people and life to align ever more joyfully and powerfully with who I am. It will mean long held and even promised books are coming; a comic strip too. It will mean new forays into song and dance. It will mean “firing everything”.

“Everything requires everything” were words that came in answer to a deep prayer at my sister’s graveside several years back. Everything my Soul desires requires everything I am… every bit of knowledge, skill, ability, character and more.

My point to you, and for now, is “What is the everything you seek and what is the everything you can bring to it?” Your best life is defined by you, but it requires all of you… not pieces.

Be you. Live your life.

I will.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Fear: The End?

Over this month, we have looked at fear.  In our last post, we dug in on Fear and the Track Record.  Today, we bring it all together with an add.

Jenny says…

To catch you and me up to date, here is what I have shared this month.

This month I will speak on fear and how we allow it to consume and control us.  Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous likely to cause pain, or a threat. It is to be afraid of someone or something.

Many of us allow fear to control decisions and choices that we make, which in turn may alter the path that our life is meant to take. It can be stressful, create anxiety and overwhelm us and our lives.
When I think of fear, a video from Steve Harvey’s talk show comes to mind. He was in between airing his show during commercial break and out of nowhere got the urge to speak to his audience about “jumping”. He speaks about how is it that we really know if we can be successful at something if we don’t take the “jump” and just go for it. It was awe inspiring and motivational. I suggest finding it and watching it. It resonated with me and to be truthful it helped me “jump”.

Fear can be for a multitude of things. We can be afraid of anything from spiders, to a change in careers, or maybe we are afraid of death. These things are inevitable. We will experience so many different things in the duration of our lives. Why would we allow the fear of encountering these things freeze us from moving fluidly to experience all that the world has to offer?

It is so much easier to say than to do. I get that, believe me. I spent my life questioning what it was that I was meant to do. I dabbled in different jobs. Many of them over the years. I exceled in some, but not at others. But no matter what job I was doing, something wasn’t there. Even though I felt this in the depth of my heart, mind and gut, I didn’t know what it was that I was meant to do. I was fearful of going back to school. I was fearful of failure. Or maybe a little fearful of getting an education that I either would not use, or I wouldn’t truly love. Because of this I took many years to explore, to figure out what it was that I was destined to study. From the age of 19 up until the age of 31, I kept coming back to helping people in some capacity whether large or small. I worked in retirement homes, I worked with children, I worked with adults that had Cerebral Palsy and Down Syndrome. I grew to know that I was meant to help. Whatever that looked like? I also knew that I love hard. I genuinely care. I feel pain of others and truly empathize. So, there had to be something that fit this criteria. There had to be something that nurtured my strengths and passions. And there was. But first I had to dig deep and get to know who I am as a person. Then it took a whole other level of realness within me. Which at moments brought on a fear of its own. But I pushed through it, fear and all. I worked on my abilities and skills and the rest fell into place.

When we think of fear, we think of the negative aspect of it. What we don’t always realize is there are actual benefits to feeling fear. Fear guides our fight and flight responses. It also heightens our senses while keeping us alert and better prepared. When our brain kicks in to fight or flight our body is pumped full of Cortisol (the stress hormone). When we are finding ourselves flushed with stress or fear our adrenaline kicks in. Adrenaline increases our heart rate, but also gives us a burst of energy and focuses our attention on the danger at hand. During this fearful or stressful state, your body is also supplying norepinephrine, which is much like arousal. It helps us become more aware, alert, awake and focused. We become more responsive. And it pumps blood flow to the areas that are the most essential during this time, so that we can flee the stressful situation.

I think of all the things that our body and brain is capable of in these moments. I think hell, why are we not learning how to use fear and stress in a more positive way? Why can’t we build on our fear and maybe somehow it will help us overcome and conquer something that we had no idea we were even capable of? Or maybe allowing ourselves to feel the fear in those very real and terrifying moments, we in turn discover life-altering realizations about who we really are, and why we react in those particular moments.

So, a little more about what I discovered in the moments of facing “my fear”, and even years after. I spend my younger adult years just living life, moving from apartment to apartment, house to house. I never stayed in any place too long. I never stayed in any relationship too long. I had a gypsy soul, and still do in a much healthier way. I was lost I guess you could say. I was so unsure of anything in life, anything other than knowing I wanted to be a mom. That was the only thing I could think, the only thing that I was certain of. Even though I was young, I was a lover, and a very nurturing person. I knew I needed to be needed. It might sound crazy, but that was something I felt at a very young age. So, the years went by quickly, still no growth on my part, or at least I didn’t feel that there was. Yet, there was! Every single moment of my life was growth somehow. Even the moments where I was failing. There was growth in my bad decisions. There was growth in every relationship I ever had. I couldn’t see exactly how this would all play out. But it did. And now years later I see how and why all of those moments, those fearful situations, and those terrifying yet brave choices that I made put me in the right place in my life. It gave me the tools I needed to know when the moment came for me to “jump”. And it’s funny because I watched Steve Harvey’s video and thought “how will I know when and where I should actually jump?”. Boy did it smack me right in the face. It was like walking straight into a brick wall. And it was scary as all hell. It shook me to the core, yet, made EVERYTHING so damn clear. Everything in my life had led me to this moment. Now this may look so different for each and every one of you. It may not only shake you to your very core, but it might knock you right off your feet. I guess that is where harnessing our stress hormone and our fear comes to play.

Today, OCTOBER 30, I offer…

Maybe instead of running when we feel this undeniable pull in a certain direction, we should instead explore this path. Maybe this is the path that we were meant to travel. Maybe it is something you never in a million years thought that you would do, or even be interested in doing. Now let me be clear, I am talking healthy changes, healthy exploration and experiences. I am not saying to jump into a random relationship or take a job because you have a fear of the unknown. I am saying listen to your body cues. Feel that surge of energy when the cortisol flushes through you. Use that as your driving force to challenge or overcome the obstacle that you are facing.

Barry says…

… and I intend to; explore. Thanks for that reminder Jenny.  These past few years, especially, since my TIA/stroke in 2015, I have felt something of a gnawing in my Soul.  Indeed, over the last year or so in particular, I have taken on a strategic and almost purposefully meandering journey of reflection and re-engineering … almost.  No, not almost, indeed and in deed.

This week, that kind of culminated in a post called What Matters Most?  In that, I shared on making and leaving your M.A.R.K. and stating your C.A.S.E..  I highly recommend the read if I do say so myself; and I do.

With that in mind, my deepest desire is not for riches nor fame, but service and impact.  I seek only to work with those I can truly help.  They are identified in that blog, where I focus it down to:

  • I love, honor and have a blast helping global goal minded, and noble hearted educators, entrepreneurs and leaders move the world. I speak, teach, coach, facilitate, consult, write, cartoon, sing, dance, vlog, blog, pod and create on it.

How does this relate to fear?  I am about to go outside my ever increased (over the years) box.  I have had moments in my life where I was called upon, first resisted, and then made my jump… and those moments served in (a) teaching me my best relationship with fear, (b) showing me new understandings of capacity, and (c) offering new vistas and roads.  This moment is no different.

In doing so, it might mean some kind of change of scenery; not necessarily geographically.  It might mean new circles.  It will mean new circles.  That does not mean leaving my teaching, nor my work with Epic Engage™.  That is the core and heart to this growth.  I am an educator and entrepreneur who simply wants to love, honor and have a blast helping those global goal minded, and noble hearted educators, entrepreneurs and leaders move the world.  It does mean digging deeper on a global focus.

Since childhood, I have seen myself as “Terran”, and my neighbourhood was Newfoundland and Labrador.  I seek to primarily travel and work and walk with those that get that.  That is not an elitist view because such a vision is open and accessible to anyone.  It does mean that it is time for me to put on those global glasses and find those whose full heart is in it.  I have no desire to retreat into local life.  I love where I live, and will always call it my “hood”.  But my vision is world embracing, and embracing is more than “accepting”.  It requires a Wholeheartedness that says there is no “Plan B”.  It requires such a Wholeheartedness that many might not share.  That is OK.  A part of me wants to ride with everyone.  A bigger part of me knows that we best ride with those who want to ride together.

My life and friendships and work will not change much.  But, there will be a fundamental change in seeing my life as “global”. As noted, I care not for riches, nor fame.  Still, this “boy inside the man” has always sought service and impact that has no freakin’ borders and serves those who have the capacity and deep desire for the “betterment of the world”.

Some will not be on board, and that scares a part of me.  But, that is good. Fear is a friend that causes us to question what it is we fear.  Some fears tell us that we need to protect ourselves and that is a good thing.  Some fears say “I dare you“.  That is a good thing too.

For the next two months, I am choosing to run silent and deep.  I will continue posting daily on my platforms of Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter, thrice daily; morning, noon and night.  Three times daily with posts that I feel might add to the character of life.

That being said, I will be laying low otherwise..  I will be focusing on my teaching, Epic Engage™, my university courses and my health.  I will not be out and about.  There may be an event or two.  There will be a few coffees and evenings with friends.  But, I am drawing back, taking a deeper dive into those “global” eyes.  I will be better understanding that I am a world citizen; an educator and entrepreneur without borders, if you will.

Will drawing back and doing so be scary?  Yup.  Yip. Uh-huh.  It will mean questioning and changing my life in ways I have gotten used to for now seemingly too long.  I love my life, and am grateful for it; but it is time to change it.

So, and again, let me ask you.

  • What matters most to you? What cause or work or progress or service matters most to you? Deeply. Maybe consider those global goals to jog some thought.
  • How do you imagine yourself now, or in the future, helping advance on it… moving the needle on it?
  • Who do you imagine yourself best serving in doing so?
  • What talents, capacities and services do you bring to move that needle?
  • How will you be known with consistency, that is aligned with you, simple and enjoyable?

Dare yourself.  Your fear might be your friend.  Fear is never the end… it is the beginning; of discovery.  Spend some time with you.  Reflect.  Re-engineer.  Face the fear and feed the fire.  I will.

TOGETHER

So, yes… fear has been our journey for October.  Together, Jenny and I ever continue to be committed to living a joyful life and work.  Friends and colleagues do that.  As noted, having a better understanding of fear helps too.  We will continue to explore our own perspectives on love and character and how they can build a life of work, play and service that is right for each and all of us.

Using Fear

This week, we continue our exploration of fear.

Jenny and I are digging deeper on this thing called fear, for ourselves and others.  We are going beyond the “face value” of this force we call fear.  This week, we question it’s value.

Jenny says…

I have shared three times on fear so far in:

I encourage you to go back and read for yourself.  In The broadCAST™, I finished by saying I had some questions.  I do, for us all.  And some thoughts.

Honestly, I continue to think on these questions and thoughts and will no doubt share more next week.  For now, I am asking that you think about it.

Barry says…

Jenny, I find this useful and am pondering same.  What if fear was a tough coach, believing in us but pushing us?  What if fear desired to be tamed or conquered?  In my post in The broadCAST™, I suggested “that fear is too often lumped into one big bowl. Truthfully, there is irrational and rational fear. Fear has its benefits. It can keep us safe in the face of rational fear. Irrational fear, on the other hand, can control us in ways we must resist.”

What if the irrational fears are truly here to help?  We know the rational fears are good for us; they protect us.  But, indeed, what if the irrational fears were intent on inviting us to tame them, to conquer them, to build confidence through the courage in facing them?  What if they are stepping stones to learning our greatest capacity?

Tomorrow, I have one of the most potentially far reaching talks I have ever given ( I will share more next time), but there are voices within that I have not heard in years. Voices that say, “Are you up to this?” and such.  I have been in the training and development field for 39 years, have delivered messages to 200,000+ people through 20,000+ contact hours, have coached 1500+ clients, and delivered to audiences as large as 4,000… and still that voice creeps in for tomorrow.  It questions me.  And I will answer to the best of my ability.  As a mentor once said to me, “Courage first, Confidence second”.  I am about to find another stepping stone.

Fear as Motivator

TOGETHER

So, yes… fear continues to be our journey for October.  Together, Jenny and I ever continue to be committed to living a joyful life and work.  Best friends do that.

A New Chapter with Benny and Jarry

Last week, I posted on My Summer CAMP.  In it, and among other things, I suggested that, “My thought to you is four-fold.

  • Cleansing of mind, body and spirit requires honesty, openness and courage.
  • Doing so is an investment.
  • Doing so requires us to be open, adaptive and relentless (your OARs in the water).
  • The return is high, on Clarity and Confidence.”

Such as been born out this past week, with changes coming to Epic Engage™ and how and why and with whom we work it.  One of the first changes is to this blog.  Going forward, much of my own work will be with my best friend and comrade in arms, Jenny Dearing.  You will learn more of Jenny in the days and weeks to come but our work together is driven by the advancement of character, love, unity and excellence.  What does that mean?  You will find out soon.

For now, let me suggest that I am personally more clear than ever on what Epic Engage™ stands and works and serves for, going forward.  Here, the blog will be known as Benny and Jarry, to represent the combined work of two best friends with passions and capacities for work that matters to both of us.  More important for now, it is a reminder that my question to you last week still stands.

How can you see yourself cleansing and getting to the essentials How can do CAMP?  How can you have those cool, meaningful conversations with those you deeply trust… to explore who you are and what has most meaning. How can you take actions needed to align in accordance?  How can you meditate on such, nay even pray?  I am thinking July and August will continue to be CAMP, for me…. as I get ever more clear on the work, service and play ahead.

Stay tuned for the first of Benny and Jarry, and look forward to a fierce and fun mission and service as we move forward together, stronger.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

My Birthday Ticket

Last week, I wrote on Wander, Wonder, Ponder, Render … where I suggested that a four step process for exploring decisions for our lives moving forward might go like:

  • wander through your life from birth to now, walking through the life events as they have happened (I call it walking your life line).  Be deliberate and walk the journey.  That which we most remember, we do so for good reason.
  • be in a state of wonder in doing so, realizing this as an epic journey filled with trials and triumphs and everything in between.
  • ponder their most constructive lessons for you.  Ultimately, each trial and triumph is a teacher.
  • then render some form of decision on where you go from here.

Today, on the eve of my 59th birthday, and in part born of such a process this week, I both wrote this on Our Universal Three and created this “birthday ticket”.  The birthday ticket identifies a concise list of things to happen in this, my 60th year, and ahead of my 60th birthday next February 2020… yup, this time next year.  They include 9 milestones that will make my 60th my best birthday yet.

  • 36” waist, healthy and strong; best shape of life
  • master and lifelong student of character  and unity
  • speaker in English, Mandarin and French
  • student with The Ruhi Institute
  • lover, singer dancer, cartoonist, writer, archer and storyteller
  • simple man with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda
  • business educator with CNA
  • Strategic Leader with Epic Engage™
  • financially capable contributor to the world.

This “ticket” is now present on my desktop at College, and at home.  It is on my phone.  It is concise and clear.  It is a one year bucket-grocery list of gifts to me, in becoming and being.  It represents my 20022020 Vision of:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building. I work with noble minded and hearted leaducators, communitrepreneurs and emergents in advancing same. In so doing, I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global. I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more. I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love. My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all. I am teaching business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and doing my global work of Epic Engage™. I am loving it! I am 110K in weight (slim for my body structure) and benching same; healthy and strong. And, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.

It is served by my 90 day strategic plans… and I have aimed and claimed my way to this clarity.  All of this is to say that I highly recommend the process of identifying your gifts to you this year.  They can end up being gifts to the world.  In my case, these 9 milestones above answer:

  • Remembering who I am and want to be as Barry Lewis Green
  • Readying myself by learning and developing in the areas that are most aligned for me.
  • Rising to serve as such where I best can.

So, how about you?  For your birthday, or any launch day, what might you set aside as the gifts of gains in your life?  What gains can you lay claim to that will serve in you being your very best?

Peace, passion and prosperity…

THE Epic Engage

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

I am on a 500 day journey, leading up to my 60th birthday on February 20, 2020 (20022020).  I have been posting on same, with my latest just last week in DEEDS, WORD and L.O.V.E.  .  In it, I reference an earlier post called SNAPSHOTS and LOVE.

Within that, I share thoughts on L.O.V.E. as an action.  I specifically suggest, “… in support of my efforts I am reflecting on love and its importance.  I am considering how I approach these tasks not simply knowing that I will love the results, but seeing love as an action in getting there.  LOOK inside for my strengths… strengths of character, abilities, skills, knowledge, excellence and temperament… my best CASKET.  Seek out OPPORTUNITIES (my snapshot) where those strengths are needed.  Have a VISION of how much better the world, or my corner of it, will be when applied.  ENGAGE, and do it.”  Game on!

WITH THAT IN MIND

Within those posts… I offered my current Snapshot Vision for November 15, 2018 through February 12, 2019… 90 days. Certainly, I am quite pleased to say things are humming along and I am estimating that 95% of the vision will be complete by January 1. I am humbly excited.  Those results are happening as I practice Reliability, Steadfastness, Honor, Contentment and Endurance; my strategic 5 virtues for the journey.  You can do your own strategic 5 card spread right here. Determine an issue or goal, and go for it.

That being said, and with those 5 virtues in mind, I am finding these 90 day “bricks” to be very useful… 5 grocery list visions (if you will) that will build upon one another to reach my 20022020 vision. of:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and more of what and who I love.

SO WHAT?

All of this is to say that the system is working, and that got me thinking on some things.  Just this past Monday, I was called in for the results on some tests; tests that I have been periodically taking since my stroke in 2015.  To date, all tests have been fabulous; clean slates.  However, this one showed signals of the possible onset of diabetes.  I do not have it, but there were signs of its potential.  That galvanized me.

It got me thinking even harder on my vision.  It got me thinking about obligations and rights.  Right now, I am meditating on rights and responsibilities.  In particular, I am reflecting on Responsibility as a virtue.  I am considering not simply the practice of Responsibility but the focus.  In other words, it is not simply important to be responsible but to personally, professionally and strategically determine to what and whom I intend to be responsible.  The words of my friend Michelle Cederberg speak something to that.  I am listening.  Indeed, that was a large part of the motivation for the 20022020 Vision.  Discerning and deciding upon that to which I see myself responsible is vital.  The 20022020 Vision holds me to that focus.

It has all got me considering my career and calling… and a leaning in on the potential of social enterprise; what I call communitrepreneurship.  It has got me thinking that a new business plan is part of the 20022020 Vision and (I am thinking) due this month, heading into 2019.  It has got me considering the Global Goals and my individual and professional responsibility to help with everything from global education to food sustainability.  And, it has got me to consider all of that under the mantle of simplicity, ease and awesome… as my unofficial mentor Joe Calloway writes.

For me, as a Baha’i… I am still reminded that Baha’u’llah said, “The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds …”  and that Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.”  He also said “Rise then unto that for which you were created.”  I only offer this as these words are calling me to an ever sharper focus on my own vision and its relevance to myself and my life … and my world.  The 20022020 Vision is intended to be a simple picture in my head and heart.  Indeed, it is known to me in an instant of thought.  I see it in the blink of an eye.  Articulated, it takes words:

  • It is 20022020, and I am The Unity Guy™; student and educator around leadership grounded in character, unity, and spirit… delivering in English, Mandarin and French.
  • I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love.
  • I am healthy and strong, and wealthy enough to do the work I choose; living as a happy and joyful man.

… but within, it is simply known.  And, within is where we take it.

THE Epic Engage

To do that, I am reminded of 9 words that are swimming around in that head and heart of mine, of late… “Everything requires everything.  To be ready, do the work.”  My greatest mentors have said that when we have a clear vision, we must needs act as if it has already happened.  We must be wholehearted.  I must remember that I am that guy, that man. that human. So:

I am Barry,  student of character, unity, and spirit, fluent in English, Mandarin and French…  living life with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love… healthy and wealthy enough to do the work I choose. I am that Simple Man.

This is my ever focusing and personal sense of vision.  If I carve it down and refine it but more, I am a Simple Man

  • a tri-lingual and global student and educator on character, unity, spirit
  • living with great love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, and epic stories
  • enjoying, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love.
  • healthy and wealthy enough to do the work I choose.

My work will continue to be born out of it; as an educator and entrepreneur.  My business plan over these next couple of weeks will truthfully and powerfully and simply reflect it.  This is a journey; more than 500 days… much more.  It is life long.

It is life long… for us all.  But we get to decide who we are.  We get to dare ourselves to be that person, even now.  But, we must go inside.  So, my questions to you are:

  • Who are you?
  • Who do you want to be?

Be that.

Now.

I dare you.

See where that takes you.

That is the Epic Engage™;  the one inside.  Indeed and in deed:

Peace, passion and prosperity.

GREAT Goals and the HUNT

Last week, I shared in Homes Stretch, 3 Steps that, among other things, I am reminded there are three simple but hard steps working towards our own something cool … first, have the big picture clearly in mind and heart… second, establish mini 90-day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and, third, execute.  The hard part is to take the time in getting clear… and in the doing it.  Yes, clarity and commitment to follow through are simple and hard.  And, crucial.  This week, after an eventful, soul searching and eye opening week, I offer the following.

THE BIG PICTURE STAYS TRUE

If anything, this week confirmed for me that my big picture vision stands.  It is important to be clear… and clarity requires diligence in the reflection on same.  Clarity requires digging and questioning and observing and listening.  This week, I had numerous moments to do so and get sure.  My vision remains, and stronger for the reflection this week.

That being said, this week also suggested that I might boil it down to:

  • It is 20022020, and I am The Unity Guy™; student and educator around leadership grounded in character, unity, and spirit… delivering in English, Mandarin and French.   I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and all of what and who I love.  I am healthy and strong, and wealthy enough to do the work I choose; living as a happy and joyful man.

That is my gift to me on 20022020.  And, it is best manifested by understanding it as reality now.  Michelangelo himself suggested that he carved the angel out of the stone, implying it was already in there.  Getting clear on that pre-existing condition of reality matters and should not be avoided as something warm and fuzzy.  It is bedrock.

So, the big picture is confirmed, and in hand.  Indeed, over the years, I have developed a system I call GREAT™ Vision.  To have a powerful vision, you set your GOAL with specifics, then get abundantly clear on its RELEVANCE for you.  You figure out how you will EVALUATE your progress.  You determine your ACTIONS necessary, and you set your TIMETABLE.  The above around which I have articulated these past few days and weeks meets the needs on goal, relevance and timetable.  Let us consider execution and evaluation.  Enter, the other two steps previously noted.

  • establish mini 90-day snapshots to be the bricks in building that something cool, and
  • execute.

  • And, yes, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.

First, I had a dream.  Then, I had a vision.  It was deliberated on and articulated, and reflected upon and crafted.  THEN, and now, I have a plan with a checklist for measurement.  Now, it is about the execution.

RELEVANCE MATTERS

With that in mind, I am a strong believer that relevance fuels execution.  Knowing THE WHY is vital.  I know my why.  I am approaching 60.  I am young.  My stroke taught me that life is not given; it is appreciated.  The best way we can appreciate it is to live it.  The best way to live it is to live it as you.  In the Baha’ì Faith there are several Writings that even more deeply;y speak to me at this time.

From Bahá’u’lláh

  • Noble have I created thee, yet thou hast abased thyself. Rise then unto that for which thou wast created. These words speak to me of the idea that we all are created noble but yet we sell ourselves much too short, forget who we are and are expected to rise to who we always have been.
  • Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom. This speaks to me of the vital and noble nature of education, for the betterment of the world. Speaking of which…
  • The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct.  These words speak to me of a simple power we all have; character.
  • Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.  This speaks for itself; action… execution.

They all speak to me of relevance, for me.  My humble suggestion is to get clear on what is deeply important for you.  Know your big picture, however simple it might be.  Get clear on your snapshot milestones.  Then, execute.

Therein lies the GREAT hunt.  Therein, the way to live up to our heroes.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

An Invitation to Bucket

In my return to Barry’s Blog last week, I wrote on Too Long and Too Much and Thanksgiving. Amidst this past weekend, I had a personal a-ha and it resulted in LinkedIn posts on a 500 day journey towards my 60th birthday.  Just this morning, I wrote on Commitment and Day 2.  I have long been about exploring character and building healthy unity.  The a-ha serves both.  All of that is to say, I am now extending an invitation to you and yours to walk with me on the journey.  If you decide so, discern on your buckets of interest.  I call them the ALs, as they all end in “al”.  🙂

  • Spiritual… your spiritual, soulful life
  • Emotional… relationships and love
  • Material… the stuff
  • Physical… your health
  • Financial… things money
  • Educational… what you intend to study and learn and master
  • Vocational… work, service and calling
  • Social… contributions to community
  • Inspirational… the joyful for you

Even this morning I have updated a little.  I have opted to combine mine down to 5.

  • Educational, which will include my MBa, Mandarin, French and even spiritual
  • Joyful… which will include emotional, and inspirational
  • Work and Service… including vocational, and social
  • Physical… my health
  • WEALTH… including material and financial

My five buckets statement to be filled by 20022020 (my 60th birthday) goes like this:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.

Those are my five for Fidelity (promise kept) and Commitment (follow through).  You need not choose 5 buckets.  Choose one, if that calls to you.  But, here is the thing.  Whenever you join the journey, we set our sights on 20022020, to have a cool, funky online celebration.  Imagine the feeling.  Join me.  I hope you do.  I dare you to…

Peace, passion and prosperity.
