A couple of days ago, I posted our 400th LinkedIn blog post… on the leadership strength that is Courtesy… as part of a new series called Pandamonium. In it, I offered the Virtues Reflection Card for Courtesy and offered some starting thoughts. I invite you to have a good read and reflect.
Courtesy is mannered and shows others that we respect and value them. We treat others graciously; making requests over demands. But even when we must command, we do so with honor. It is not unlike the Jedi Way. 🙂 In so doing, we listen and attend to people attentively; especially our intimates… but our customers, colleagues and constituencies… all in all. We walk with a countenance of respect, honor and grace that is powerful and quietly remarkable. People will remark on it, for they feel truly valued. Trust is earned and trustworthiness is advanced. It is an honorable investment.
A great read for advancing the needle on this strength is How to Win Friends and Influence People; a classic by Dale Carnegie. I understand that British Airways called it the best business book of the 20th Century. Read it, and again… and again. The wisdom is simple and profound and effective. The title can be off-putting but the content is rich and wise; and much is about Courtesy. I humbly recommend it as one of my top five favorite leadership books of all time.
Courtesy; Panda lives this quality. I learn from her every day, on how to practice same. And I have learned from her that we can practice this quality with ourselves; being courteous to our own being. These past few days, I have been gutting, cleaning and simplifying… inspired by the work on Essentialism. What became quickly apparent was a new funky working studio for my creativity I now call the Fox Hole.
It feels good to value ourselves, and it might just open up new venues of thought, will and action. As we do so, we better understand this strength with others.
How would it look for you… manifested at school, work, business or community? How would you or do you walk and talk to live this strength of character and leadership? Where do you most need now to move the needle on its practice.
Do that. The world, locally and globally, needs it.
Peace, passion and prosperity.
