Audacity, Primed

In 5 to Thrive, I shared on Candor, Daring, Dominion, Soulfulness and Wholeheartedness… and said, “These five I intend to deepen in over the next few weeks and ahead of a new College year. I believe and contend they are Virtues that expect a deeper dive, sacrificing everything else for everything truly desired.” Well, in so doing, I conversed and reflected and crafted on another…

In many ways, it encompasses the earlier 5. For me, on this 5th anniversary of my stroke, I am reminded of the lessons that came that year on living a life closer to the bone. On August 19, 2015 I did not know that which was coming. August 20 of that year, I heard the news. I was dumbfounded. Blessed with few physical challenges, my brain did have work to do, and I did have a year off… and time in CT Scans and MRIs, and thinking upon my life forward. It was both challenge and opportunity, but that is another story. I am reminded this day that there is still work to do.

I have commissioned a new website to ever better reflect that, and I am re-committed to bringing such to my teaching in this my 26th year. I have a 6 month wellness program starting in September, and I am redefining my personal life. That said, today, I am reflecting on this virtue. My thought is, “How can the wind not be the wind?” It cannot. To be our truest requires Courage, Honesty, Truthfulness, Candor, Daring, Dominion, Soulfulness and Wholeheartedness… and Audacity. My stroke reminds me that there is still work to do on building that city. To do that, here are some QUESTIONS upon which I am reflecting.

  • At core, who am I? What matters most to me in living, being and doing this one life I know that I have?
  • How can I fully accept that?
  • How can I be most responsible in living it, and for whom?
  • How can I best express that to the world in countenance and gate?
  • How can I best align my spirit, thought, will and action?
  • What will that all look like in living my life?
  • What matters most in doing any of that?

I am asking myself these today on Day 3 of a 10-Day Challenge…. with today being on Modesty.

Comfortable being who I am relies on me having an ever better sense of who that is, and owning it. 95% needs to advance towards 100%.

I intend to explore these questions.

How about you?

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Dominion and Daring

In Dare to Care, last week, I shared “As I head into this upcoming weekend, I am leaning towards taking my work and business … and somewhat spinning it all on its head. I am teaching online these days as I walk through my now 82 days of isolation. I am exploring new capacities in doing so. But, my work with Epic Engage is getting more than a re-look. I am examining the very foundation of what I do with it. Indeed, this month, it undergoes a Soulful re-engineering to meet the real, raw, right and results… “

I recommend the read. Indeed, I recommend R4/D2 as well. They are guiding me. Still, it did not finish with last weekend. Indeed the process has engaged its own challenges, and choices… and the practice of Wisdom. When I think back to real, raw, right and results … and Dominion and Daring, I more deeply realize that this requires a deep and immediate dive. No dipping of toes in the pool here. Determining exactly what real, raw, right and results means for me requires an act driven by same.

These next few days will be that. This next week or so, and amidst the concluding of the College year… will see that deep dive. Dabbling does not do it. There are several questions I am ever more intent on honestly and courageously answering:

  • What does real look like in my work and life?
  • What does raw imply in terms of how I deliver on it?
  • How do I understand “the right thing”; what is my metric for same?
  • How do I define “results” in life?

I will attack these questions practicing Dominion

… and Daring.

89 days into my own self isolation, and I have questions to ask and answers to provide. I have my own Soulful interrogation to conduct.

What questions are you needing ask yourself? Are you dabbling or daring in asking them? What would it look like when you take your own deeper dive? What impact would it have?

Dive with me.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Candor Can Do

OMG, it has been two weeks since my last post here… written on A Stronger Ship. Last week was filled with beginning Intersession and a new term at College. In that last post, I shared on 4 strengths for a better world. Empathy. Endurance. Enthusiasm. Excellence.

I suggest a go back and read, and reflect. That said, I also suggest that I am further exploring these four, and more.

Coach, Coach Thyself

In my most recent LinkedIn post, I weighed in on what I see as the problem with self care. Today, I am, amidst teaching online, planning for a bit of a retreat and advance this coming weekend. I am going to coach myself up.

In that time, and on my 64th and 65th days of self isolation, I am looking candidly at my own chosen road ahead. When I ponder on Empathy and Caring and their application for my own life, I am coming face to face and heart to heart with a reality we all need face to some degree or another.

Stop comparing.

Joe Calloway recently shared this on focus. In it, he says, “At some point, though, you need to focus on your areas of greatest potential… Don’t be distracted by things that you “could” do, but that would take away from those things that will bring you the greatest return on focus and effort.”

This speaks to me that the best way to take care, is to find my best aligned and sharpened focus. To do that, I need to practice Empathy and Caring, with myself. I need to listen to my self, myself… and not be distracted by all the voices and what everyone else is doing. I need to look to the world to see what genuine needs exist in the world that best meet my genuine focus and capacity. 40 years in leadership training and development across North America, my capacity is broad and deep. That is strength, and weakness. The weakness is the challenge it holds for focus. There is much I could do. There is much I can do. But, chasing bobbles and distractions does not serve me, nor those I choose to ultimately serve at work, and in life.

The Power of Empathy and Caring Inwardly Practiced

I am ever realizing today how much Empathy and Caring impact my capacity to get candid and truthful with myself. That, in turn and once executed on, fosters my ability to endure and excel; enthused to boot. There is a Certitude that can come from getting perfectly real. In working and coaching with clients, I would practice such to help get them more clear on focus. Those “guns” need be turned on my own internal conversation, ever more so… and now.

I am a blessed man. I love my work as an educator. I adore my work with Epic Engage. That said, such realities will be strengthened when I focus on what I best do, and go do that ever increasingly. This weekend will be about taking that “98% there” understanding to ever fuller alignment. I have no need to chase bobbles and business and buzz. I have the time and space to determine my own sense of the master in the art of living as LP Jacks described:

“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.”

Candor, Can Do

Practicing Candor and Dominion and Wholeheartedness will get me there; and the kind of Candor, in particular, that is grounded in Empathy and Caring, and that produces a greater and genuinely enthused capacity to both endure and excel. It will help me sharpen and make my mark.

In these days, there is much to distract us. I know there is for me. And for me, Candor with myself and the resulting focus it will forge… will help me walk through those distractions with an assured step.
