R4/D2… 6 Pillars for Living

In Step Back and Forward, I wrote… ” For me, it is time to take something of a spiritual step back, on the eve of 70 days of taking a physical step back under self isolation. For me, it is time to step back, to step forward. It is time.”

In and amongst that time, I have been walking and reflecting, a lot… some 45,000 steps in the past three days alone. I have written on Wonder, and shared my thoughts on the release of Shinedown’s Atlas Falls. You should have a listen to that song… I looove it.

Yesterday, in finishing off 16,000+ steps, amidst my music and prayers and more, I had a thought come on some things key for my work and life going forward… some pillars, if you will. It came almost in a flash and with a bit of an acronym of course, lol. This brain seems subject to same. 🙂

Enter R4/D2.

Real. Raw. Right. Results. Dominion. Daring.

Real.

Integrity. Authentic. Genuine. For me, and for a long time, but ever more so going forward… no pretenses, posing or posturing. A mentor once told me that the difference in POSE and POISE is the “I”. We must be ourselves, real. Candor enacted.

This does not imply abandoning Tact

… but Tact is offering Truthfulness with Kindness. Enter Candor. Real, it is. Candor builds Trustworthiness as people start to get that there are no back doors. Neither does this imply gushing all to all. It implies being direct and real. Pillar One to my life and work.

Raw.

I believe in Professional, but I do not believe that that must imply some “smarmy” sense of polish. Raw is not about unprofessional for professional is about content; expertise. As Kim Mitchell once sung, “I know there’s a lot of feathers but not much chicken”. I have no interest in the “smooth” and “rehearsed”… or the name dropping and photo opps Raw is the way I like my carrots, and it is the way I like my work and life. Professional is about Excellence of content and intent. Raw allows (and I believe encourages) same in so much as it is not worried so much on “making a mistake” as it is on delivering the real goods. Pillar Two.

Right.

Consider Righteousness.

It is not the same as self righteousness. The former is about doing what is right (over what you feel like doing). The latter is about telling everyone else how to live. For me, the right thing is vital. Character matters, always.

In good, bad and ugly times, it matters. It is Strength. It is not about being Perfect as a noun, for that is myth. It is about Perfect as a verb which is all about getting better. Doing the right thing advances that. Trying matters. “Is this the right thing?” will be my question, moving forward. Pillar Three.

Results.

Purposefulness matters.

Purposefulness is less about drive and hustle as it is about intention and flow. I have long believed that Purposefulness is Joyfulness. It brings meaning. For me, arbitrary results are not the thing. Intent is more important than outcome … as outcome is, in many ways, out of our hands.

What is important is that we have ends in mind. Going through the motions is not of interest to me. Life is too precious. This does not imply being busy for busy sake, but this morning I posted on Facebook that “a life filled is not necessarily the same as a life fulfilled”.

For me, Results is about intent and focus and moving towards. The things I choose to do, going forward, will be grounded in same and such. “Does this move me, my work and life forward… does it give me a Hell Yeah?” is my question to self. Pillar Four.

Dominion.

Consider Dominion.

Dominion is the virtue of Ownership, and all that we truly own is our life. We take Responsibility for it. It is not about arrogance or dominance of others. It is about owning your life.

On this my 75th day of self isolation, I am owning my Responsibility to myself and others. Amidst this First Wave, and understanding the essential mechanics of pandemic waves, I will continue to physical distance, wash hands, cover face and more. I see it not as a constraint on my freedom, as my spirit is always free… and doing service to myself and others is a way to express that freedom of spirit.

Dominion means I own my life, and no one else will ever so be responsible for it. It means that I come into this world with it, and will leave with it… and only it. This life of mine is the only precious gem I will ever truly possess and I will claim Dominion of it. Pillar Five.

Daring.

To dare is not about taunting. It is about proving to oneself, one’s possibilities. Daring is not frivolous nor foolhardy for me. It is about knowing what I want to do, and moving forward doing it.

Do I want to parachute out of a plane? Nope. Do I want to bungee jump? Nah. Do I want to ride horseback on the steppes of Mongolia one day? Indeed, I do. Do I want to adventure into certain tributaries of life and work that I have never been. Oh yes.

I have found huge benefit and joy in doing so to date, and intend to make this Pillar Six, asking myself “Does this task or opportunity that I soulfully love require to to dare myself?”

If that answer is yes, I will have added smile.

A Return to R4D2.

I feel very real and raw about this decision. And right. I feel it focuses my efforts and intent and working and living in the direction and results I soulfully seek. It allows me to lay claim to the one thing I own; me. And it causes me to dare… to always be me.

My name is Barry Lewis Green. I own all three names. Barry means “spear carrier” or “spear” or “archer” depending on the source. Lewis (my grandfather’s name) means “famous in war”. The only war for which I seek to be famous is the war to claim my life and stand my middle ground.

I am a Baha’i. I am an educator by wiring, education and experience. I am an entrepreneur thusly as well. I am a world citizen, human… a Terran. I believe and hold fast in and to the global goals. I believe in the vital importance of character and unity in advancing peace, passion and prosperity as a planet. I believe in Humanity. Our Humanity is our highest standard. Our inhumanity is our lowest.

I teach, and speak, and dance, sing, cartoon, write, blog, vlog and create my way through and towards it all. I believe my life and work matters. I believe yours does too. I believe my life’s work is about being real and raw as I move towards results and do the right thing while moving there. I believe that my life is mine alone, and to be responsible in owning it. And I believe in the power of Daring to explore our greatest capacities.

I believe.

And now, I enact.

R4D2.

Character and Strength

My post this week is short, sweet and simple… I think. 🙂

First, please read last week’s post on Character Intelligence. Then, consider this most recent post on LinkedIn. Finally, consider these notes on wisdom for critical thinking from Carl Sagan.

Character is not some bobber adrift on the ocean. It is a formidable and strong ship cutting through and riding the waves. It is not prone to folly and fickleness. It is discerning and resolute.

I intend to deeper dive myself this week.

The Wall and the Eye

Transparency alert. I am a Baha’i. That is my core. I am working on it. And in these days, I can do and be nothing less. There are no easy answers; only great questions and ponderings.

In BE, at Home, last week, I shared that “I am seeing this (personal isolation and lock down) as an opportunity to go inward”. I would suggest that this past week has seen a duality, inward and outward. Since that time of my last post here, I have posted on LinkedIn, thoughts on:

I have been going online (Facebook) with “socials” with friends who just show up. That, in part, satiates the massive extrovert in me. Prayerful moments and down time satiate the massive introvert in me.

Yes, I am a man of both. Bottom line is I am going inward and outward. I have always been an “and” person… the cake and the eating it. 🙂

That being said, this day, and amidst teaching online, grading, writing and doing nothing, something is missing. A wall has been hit. I can feel it. Palpably so. Maybe it simply needs a strategic drive with my music, insular and independent. Quite possibly. But, it also is speaking to me of something else. My restless spirit, my Soul, is whispering in a scream, and I need to listen. Now. Today.

Soul Sis Stuff

My “soul sis” posted this the other day, and I found it both challenging and freeing somehow.

It speaks to me of going within in order to strengthen without.

It speaks to me that the ultimate battle is within.

The eye of the tornado. Amanda sings of it.

Then, my soul sis posted this.

She has a way of doing that. 🙂

“As ye have faith, so shall your powers and blessings be.”

This is the balance.

Faith grounds itself in the eye of the tornado. Faith does not require preconditions. It is why it is Faith.

It is not blind. It sees beyond. Beyond this matrix.

It sees, with an inner eye.

The Inner Eye

I am pondering these words, this day…

Man has two powers, and his development two aspects. One power is connected with the material world and by it he is capable of material advancement. The other power is spiritual and through its development his inner, potential nature is awakened. These powers are like two wings. Both must be developed, for flight is impossible with one wing. — Abdu’l-Bahá

and…

Man has also spiritual powers: imagination, which conceives things; thought, which reflects upon realities; comprehension, which comprehends realities, memory, which retains whatever man imagines, thinks, and comprehends. The intermediary between the five outward powers and the inward powers, is the sense which they possess in common, that is to say, the sense which acts between the outer and inner powers, conveys to the inward powers whatever the outer powers discern. It is termed the common faculty, because it communicates between the outward and inward powers, and thus is common to the outward and inward powers. For instance, sight is one of the outer powers; it sees and perceives this flower, and conveys this perception to the inner power — the common faculty — which transmits this perception to the power of imagination, which in its turn conceives and forms this image and transmits it to the power of thought; the power of thought reflects, and having grasped the reality, conveys it to the power of comprehension; the comprehension, when it has comprehended it, delivers the image of the object perceived to the memory, and the memory keeps it in its repository. The outward powers are five: the power of sight, of hearing, of taste, of smell, and of feeling. The inner powers are also five: the common faculty, and the powers of imagination, thought, comprehension, and memory. — Abdu’l-Bahá

and

…it is my hope that thine inner eye may be opened wide, so that unto thee the very core of the divine mysteries may be disclosed. — Abdu’l-Bahá

THE ROAD AHEAD

It is my hope too. I may take that drive.

Nay, I will.

My spirit is calling.

That is one immediate road. But amidst hitting this wall, I am understanding the need to see through it… and in so doing, smash it. I cannot as yet; see through it, that is. We live in a world with much uncertainty. We always have. These days, it is compounded by a truly global nature. My Faith tells me we are going to be OK. Humanity will be OK. There may be work to do. Indeed, there will be. But maybe just maybe, the first and decisive battle is within. To be of joy and service to the world… to live these words of readiness (above) amidst the days in which we live.

Today, I am hitting a wall. Today, I explore the power to dream… of a sound mind… and heart. This wall will be beaten down.

Real. Raw. Reflective. Relentless.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

BE, at Home

In Our Own Script, I noted that “I am starting my own journey of self isolation and homeworking…”.

And, it has been quite the week. Teaching college from home. Running Epic Engage from home, working with clients from a distance at home, working out and eating right… from home. This morning, on LinkedIn, I shared this on Lock Down or Castle Build, And this evening, I shared this video message.

All of this is to say that I am seeing this as an opportunity to go inward. I am nightly getting “outside contact” with “da C.L.U.B.” Facebook Live at approximately 9:00 pm NT (7:30 PM EST)… thereabouts. But, this is a time of reset and re-engineering. If I am going to be at home, I might as well BE at home.

How can you BE at home?

Oh, and check this out from the Harvard Business Review. Great read.

Our Own Script

Last week, I shared on Apathy, Fear and Responsibility, somewhat unknowingly ahead of considerable developments on the COVID-19 front. Yesterday, I posted this on doing and achieving through this time in which we find ourselves.

All of that is to say that I am starting my own journey of self isolation and homeworking, and thought to do daily posts of motivation, music, memes and more that will can possibly educate and entertain and engage. It will incorporate my regular LinkedIN posts… and these weekly blogs, plus more. It will be a place to find resources and recharge, for me and us all, should you choose to engage.

For now, here are several legit resources:

Here is another great resource, a classic from Dale Carnegie on How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, an all time fave of mine. Here is classic audio on it. Here is a summary. And a summary audio/video. And, here you can purchase it.

Oh… and here is my new fave album by Andy Grammer, listening to now. 🙂

I am treating these days like the writing of a movie script; a heroic one. Join me in creating your own. We got this. This is Day One.

Apathy, Fear and Responsibility

Last week, in Climbing the Wall, I suggested that “The watchmen are not our enemies. Our challenges are not our foes. They are moving us, to our best life and love, if we but listen, and trust. I need to keep listening, and to climb that wall.”

This week, it occurs to me that one on the watchmen is COVID-19, aka “the corona virus”. Some would have us apathetic. Some would have us fearful. The former would suggest that this is all hype and there is nothing to worry about; it is but mere hysteria. The latter would suggest that this is very scary, and feel a need to panic.

Look, I know that this already is having impact across the planet. I also know that many still remain feeling somewhat “unaffected”. Fear and apathy are both abounding it seems; another testament to our apparent current culture of extremes and division. I suggest that both reactions are less than desirable as responses. The best response is to actually, intentionally and proactively (not reactively) respond; to have the ability to respond. This is the virtue that is Responsibility; that ability to respond.

It requires balance. It requires measured Discernment. It requires being aware and mindful. It requires learning. The World Health Organization has information. So does the World Economic Forum. Knowing can move us beyond panic reactions, and towards true Responsibility.

The Watchmen

Then there is the idea of the watchmen. How does this scenario do us any good at all? First, and individually, I suggest that a potential pandemic reminds us of the importance of taking care of ourselves; healthier is more resistant… as I am reminded on my own journey back to health and strength. Second, this unfolding reality reminds us how we are connected in ways that goes beyond anything “kumbaya”.

Those are two great watchmen.

Bottom Line

We are now being called to practice Responsibility… not a bad thing for going forward. That implies getting the facts. It implies being prepared. The late great Dale Carnegie offered up these thoughts on controlling worry. Among them, he suggested:

  • Get all the facts.
  • After weighing all the facts, come to a decision.
  • Once a decision is reached, act without anxiety about the outcome.

Simple, fundamental advice. This world in which we live is all too often filled with the reactionary. The reactionary comes in the form of escapism and apathy… and in defeatism, paranoia and fear; two powerful but unproductive extremes. The numbness of apathy and the paralysis of fear… both do not serve well .

Our world demands of us emotional courage, and that demands Responsibility. Without it, we become not unlike something blowing in the wind. And, for me, I suggest that we are more than dust in that wind. We are the light and the fire, if we but choose. Our response to the watchmen will always require Responsibility. The kind of working unity needed in the face of this world and its challenges will require same.

Apathy, fear or Responsibility. Wouldn’t you rather?

Peace, passion and prosperity…
