My Fortress

In Dominion and Daring, I said, “These next few days will be that. This next week or so, and amidst the concluding of the College year… will see that deep dive. Dabbling does not do it. There are several questions I am ever more intent on honestly and courageously answering:

  • What does real look like in my work and life?
  • What does raw imply in terms of how I deliver on it?
  • How do I understand “the right thing”; what is my metric for same?
  • How do I define “results” in life?”

I am getting there, and have decided, with exams and grades completed and wrap up activities underway, to take these next 2 weeks and do the hard work. Getting a meaningful journal, my prayer book, and some time “away”… and it is time for a rescue, of Soul… and character.

Actually, my Soul needs no rescue, but an audience… full, focused and fierce. We are there. My own fortress of solitude awaits.

This morning, I posted on Assertiveness, and I recommend the read.

Take it to heart.

I will.

See you next week.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

R4/D2… 6 Pillars for Living

In Step Back and Forward, I wrote… ” For me, it is time to take something of a spiritual step back, on the eve of 70 days of taking a physical step back under self isolation. For me, it is time to step back, to step forward. It is time.”

In and amongst that time, I have been walking and reflecting, a lot… some 45,000 steps in the past three days alone. I have written on Wonder, and shared my thoughts on the release of Shinedown’s Atlas Falls. You should have a listen to that song… I looove it.

Yesterday, in finishing off 16,000+ steps, amidst my music and prayers and more, I had a thought come on some things key for my work and life going forward… some pillars, if you will. It came almost in a flash and with a bit of an acronym of course, lol. This brain seems subject to same. 🙂

Enter R4/D2.

Real. Raw. Right. Results. Dominion. Daring.

Real.

Integrity. Authentic. Genuine. For me, and for a long time, but ever more so going forward… no pretenses, posing or posturing. A mentor once told me that the difference in POSE and POISE is the “I”. We must be ourselves, real. Candor enacted.

This does not imply abandoning Tact

… but Tact is offering Truthfulness with Kindness. Enter Candor. Real, it is. Candor builds Trustworthiness as people start to get that there are no back doors. Neither does this imply gushing all to all. It implies being direct and real. Pillar One to my life and work.

Raw.

I believe in Professional, but I do not believe that that must imply some “smarmy” sense of polish. Raw is not about unprofessional for professional is about content; expertise. As Kim Mitchell once sung, “I know there’s a lot of feathers but not much chicken”. I have no interest in the “smooth” and “rehearsed”… or the name dropping and photo opps Raw is the way I like my carrots, and it is the way I like my work and life. Professional is about Excellence of content and intent. Raw allows (and I believe encourages) same in so much as it is not worried so much on “making a mistake” as it is on delivering the real goods. Pillar Two.

Right.

Consider Righteousness.

It is not the same as self righteousness. The former is about doing what is right (over what you feel like doing). The latter is about telling everyone else how to live. For me, the right thing is vital. Character matters, always.

In good, bad and ugly times, it matters. It is Strength. It is not about being Perfect as a noun, for that is myth. It is about Perfect as a verb which is all about getting better. Doing the right thing advances that. Trying matters. “Is this the right thing?” will be my question, moving forward. Pillar Three.

Results.

Purposefulness matters.

Purposefulness is less about drive and hustle as it is about intention and flow. I have long believed that Purposefulness is Joyfulness. It brings meaning. For me, arbitrary results are not the thing. Intent is more important than outcome … as outcome is, in many ways, out of our hands.

What is important is that we have ends in mind. Going through the motions is not of interest to me. Life is too precious. This does not imply being busy for busy sake, but this morning I posted on Facebook that “a life filled is not necessarily the same as a life fulfilled”.

For me, Results is about intent and focus and moving towards. The things I choose to do, going forward, will be grounded in same and such. “Does this move me, my work and life forward… does it give me a Hell Yeah?” is my question to self. Pillar Four.

Dominion.

Consider Dominion.

Dominion is the virtue of Ownership, and all that we truly own is our life. We take Responsibility for it. It is not about arrogance or dominance of others. It is about owning your life.

On this my 75th day of self isolation, I am owning my Responsibility to myself and others. Amidst this First Wave, and understanding the essential mechanics of pandemic waves, I will continue to physical distance, wash hands, cover face and more. I see it not as a constraint on my freedom, as my spirit is always free… and doing service to myself and others is a way to express that freedom of spirit.

Dominion means I own my life, and no one else will ever so be responsible for it. It means that I come into this world with it, and will leave with it… and only it. This life of mine is the only precious gem I will ever truly possess and I will claim Dominion of it. Pillar Five.

Daring.

To dare is not about taunting. It is about proving to oneself, one’s possibilities. Daring is not frivolous nor foolhardy for me. It is about knowing what I want to do, and moving forward doing it.

Do I want to parachute out of a plane? Nope. Do I want to bungee jump? Nah. Do I want to ride horseback on the steppes of Mongolia one day? Indeed, I do. Do I want to adventure into certain tributaries of life and work that I have never been. Oh yes.

I have found huge benefit and joy in doing so to date, and intend to make this Pillar Six, asking myself “Does this task or opportunity that I soulfully love require to to dare myself?”

If that answer is yes, I will have added smile.

A Return to R4D2.

I feel very real and raw about this decision. And right. I feel it focuses my efforts and intent and working and living in the direction and results I soulfully seek. It allows me to lay claim to the one thing I own; me. And it causes me to dare… to always be me.

My name is Barry Lewis Green. I own all three names. Barry means “spear carrier” or “spear” or “archer” depending on the source. Lewis (my grandfather’s name) means “famous in war”. The only war for which I seek to be famous is the war to claim my life and stand my middle ground.

I am a Baha’i. I am an educator by wiring, education and experience. I am an entrepreneur thusly as well. I am a world citizen, human… a Terran. I believe and hold fast in and to the global goals. I believe in the vital importance of character and unity in advancing peace, passion and prosperity as a planet. I believe in Humanity. Our Humanity is our highest standard. Our inhumanity is our lowest.

I teach, and speak, and dance, sing, cartoon, write, blog, vlog and create my way through and towards it all. I believe my life and work matters. I believe yours does too. I believe my life’s work is about being real and raw as I move towards results and do the right thing while moving there. I believe that my life is mine alone, and to be responsible in owning it. And I believe in the power of Daring to explore our greatest capacities.

I believe.

And now, I enact.

R4D2.

Character Intelligence

In A “PD” Day? last week, I shared on Perceptiveness and Discernment. Over this past week, I continued a journey of exploring character in these times, and yesterday I offered up a deeper dive on Confidence. Just this morning on LinkedIn, I shared on Consideration. You can find links to all of my posts on character in these times… within those posts. I have been practicing my own Perceptiveness and Discernment.

My point today is pure and simple. These days require thought, will and action. They require us to consider what we are seeing and hearing. They require us to consider what people and energies we truly need. They require us to consider our own thoughts (and mental health in doing so) and our actions and reactions. They require our emotional intelligence, and what I call our character intelligence.

Character intelligence can be advanced through the 5 Strategies of The Virtues Project.

The first strategy is Speak the Language. It essentially means… gain a better understanding of these things we call virtues; expand your vocabulary. I offer up this poster of some 101 to consider.

A simple practice would be to pick one and practice it each day. By practice I mean… look for examples of it, practice it in your own conduct, and more. To do so, you can simply refer to the poster above, and/or get the virtues cards via app from Virtuesmatter.com. Or, you can go to the main page of The Virtues Project and do a daily virtues pick.

My own thought this day, is that each week, on a Wednesday with this blog, I am going to do such a pick… and for the week. I just took my phone with the app, shook it, and a random (or not) virtue came up. That is part of the cool functionality of the app. 🙂

The card I got was…

I shall practice it fiercely this week. I will seek out examples of it, and practice it myself. How about you? Use this pic, or do your own and practice it. Onwards.

A “PD” Day?

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross suggested there were 5 stages of grief. We are experiencing them now. Some we might go through quickly, others less so. It is a personal experience. I think I am in the Bargaining piece now, figuring my way through. Last week, I shared on The Wall and the Eye. In it, I talked about the inner eye. I suggest the read. Today, on LinkedIN, I shared on Certainty in Uncertain Times. Again, I suggest the read, and reflect.

My point this day is this. I am in my 26th day of self imposed isolation and intent on a longer run yet. The introvert in me is cool with it all. The extrovert is trusting in the process and figuring out strategies. Ultimately, we are amidst much uncertainty and to get some sense of certainty, we need go inward. I need to, for sure. Try these on. I will.

A little PD for the day, for me… amidst teaching and working online. Discernment and Perceptiveness. I am in the midst of mine. How might they apply for you today?

BE, at Home

In Our Own Script, I noted that “I am starting my own journey of self isolation and homeworking…”.

And, it has been quite the week. Teaching college from home. Running Epic Engage from home, working with clients from a distance at home, working out and eating right… from home. This morning, on LinkedIn, I shared this on Lock Down or Castle Build, And this evening, I shared this video message.

All of this is to say that I am seeing this as an opportunity to go inward. I am nightly getting “outside contact” with “da C.L.U.B.” Facebook Live at approximately 9:00 pm NT (7:30 PM EST)… thereabouts. But, this is a time of reset and re-engineering. If I am going to be at home, I might as well BE at home.

How can you BE at home?

Oh, and check this out from the Harvard Business Review. Great read.

Love Comes Around

Quite the January!!! Now, onwards. February is that “month of love” and we are back to it, this month. We first shared on love back in September. We then explored Fear in October, and Empathy in November… a year ending in December, and change in January. Now, we are back to Love, for a bit. Let’s dig in…

Jenny says…

Hello my beautiful people!!! I want to pop into your world to speak on something that I so passionately believe in. That I so passionately have yearned and ached for.

Love… What can I say about love? This week (and month) we are talking a little more about how love makes us feel, how love makes us explore certain parts of us that we don’t normally tend to nurture or appreciate the way we do when experiencing said love. My heart is so all consumed with love, that this piece seems to speak louder and clearer than it has in the past.

That being said, I have loved. I have love beyond the shadow of a doubt. My son being the biggest love I have ever known. But in the more recent years I have felt love like I never knew possible. I have experienced love that I have ached and yearned for. And as you all know, I have not always been in a place to receive it, but I have always been in a place to naturally give it. It is what I am meant to do. It is the biggest piece of me as a whole. I love, and I love hard. But I have come to realize that without being in a healthy place ourselves, we cannot fully receive what we are meant to receive. This is where my life story and all that I have journeyed through comes into play so intensely. I have ventured to a place of acceptance of love and self-love like I have never received in my life up until now. Here begins my story into love and the all-powerful acceptance and realization that it is.  Over this month, I invite you to dive in with me.

Barry says…

Love. We have written on it before. But, it is a deep subject. It can be described as an emotion, an action and a virtue.

For now, and first, I suggest you read The Balance. I think it speaks to a deep love and respect for ourselves, at best.

I also suggest a read of The Leaducator for February 2020. It speaks to how we can see the world and the people in it, with a powerful, practical love.

This is a cool month for me. Super Bowl last Sunday (I am a huge football fan), Valentine’s Day, my birthday (a big one this year), Ayyam-i-Ha, and the NFL Combine. I love it! And, I look forward to deconstructing and reconstructing on love this month. Stay tuned. In the meantime, maybe have a read on Legacy, Change, Success and Confidence.

The End of Change?

Of course not; but this is the end (for now) for our dive in on it. In Snow Small Change, you can find links to all previous posts. We encourage that read and dig in. There is some good stuff in there. Now, to close it out, for now.

Jenny says…

Please read my past posts on change in Change Makes ChangeThe broadCAST, and Make Change…. and Snow Small Change. To finish my thoughts for January…

The universe has a plan for each and every one of us. You are here for a reason. You may be lost as to where you need to go next. You might stumble upon it in the most random of ways. But know that every little positive choice you make in your life, it is the fuel for the leap into that new beginning. Your life is about to unfold this beautiful masterpiece.

It may not always be a sight of beauty, but let me tell you this, when that last brush stroke goes across the page, the last choice is made and your final new beginning has peaked it’s way around the corner, you will look at that masterpiece you call your life, and you will know that all the positive choices and all the twists and turns have led you here.

You, my love, are the masterpiece. You are the master of your new beginnings!

Barry says…

End of change? Not on your life; except for the fact that while life is constant change… in many ways, we get to discern on and choose to change. I think there is a major difference in changing who we are versus changing ways we do and accept things. It is crucial for us to be true to our core. It is equally crucial for us to adapt and grow and add to our capacities.

This past weekend I found myself hearing, like many, of the passing of some famous and not-so-famous people. Prior to the news of Kobe Bryant, his daughter and 7 other wonderful souls, Clay Christensen. passed this weekend.

The news of all of this inspired me to write on what I call reconstruction. I definitely recommend the read. Reconstruction is not about changing who we are… it is about changing through adapting and growing on capacities, and aligning our words and actions with our deepest beliefs.

Growth and change is the role of education.

I am changing… not who I am, but how I increasingly better be and do it. There is a difference. Please read Reconstruction.

Be who you are. Do the change. It matters. You matter. Life matters.

Snow Small Change

Last week, we shared on Change Makes Change. Before that, The broadCAST, and two weeks ago; Make Change. The theme this month? Clearly, on change.

Wow, there has been alot of change around here the past week, with almost 120 centimeters of snow, including a 93 cm drop on Friday/Saturday, within 24 hours… accompanied by hurricane force winds… that many are now calling Stormageddon 2020.

A State of Emergency (SOE) has ensued, and life has changed for many. We have been digging out, ever since. College, University and schools have been closed since last Friday. St. John’s, Mount Pearl, and surrounding areas are each making their own progress on their respective SOEs.

So, it has been a week of change… forced and consciously made. With that in mind, we offer…

Jenny says…

First, please go back and read (if you have not already)… my posts in making change and The broadCAST, and last week in change requires change. Here, I continue…

I left off by saying that things were “a breath of fresh air, but at the same time kind of scary”. I then knew that things had to change. If not, the universe wouldn’t allow the positive energy that I was exuding, to come back to fuel me.

While I made these minuscule changes in my life, big differences were seen, both internally and externally. I started seeing who I was on a deeper level than I could have ever envisioned. I set plans in place. I set my standards higher. I allowed remarkable people into my life and opened my heart for the upmost beauty that life could offer me.

I started one new beginning the day that I decided to go back to school. In which I have to say, it is never too late to start something. Anything that your heart desires, you can achieve it. I stuck with it and I am now a graduate. My newest beginning is now as a graduate. I am watching myself create a new path. A path of employment. Of experiences and learning. A path of new territories and adventures. In this time, it is almost as if my new beginning into the field of Child and Youth Care with Addictions has opened other doors, with higher standards.

It has opened my heart to love like I have never experienced. It has allowed me to see all that I am as a student and all that I am capable of.

I guess my point in all of this is that I know sometimes we don’t see where the road will take us. Or even if we know how to get on said road. Sometimes the path is so unclear (not unlike the shoveling out this past week). Or maybe it is right under our noses the entire time. All I can tell you is don’t be afraid to make a change. Don’t be afraid for new beginnings. The time will come on that path of new beginnings where everything starts to click. Things fall into place and you can intensely feel and see your masterpiece unfold before your very eyes.

I have more to say in my final installment on change (for now anyways) next week.

Barry says…

It has been quite the week. It has caused me time to not only shovel out on snow, but on life. I have reflected, and posted, on

Been busy. 🙂 All the posts follow a path of where are we going; and I suggest are worth the time to read and reflect. All that being said, I will add for now is this…

Change is not easy. It is not meant to be. It requires Courage and Commitment.

Courage. When in change, we are traveling new ground; or at least ground we have not seen in a while. It is not lost on me that toddlers, as they first learn to walk and talk, are practicing it without even knowing it. It is scary to stumble and not be understood. It requires Courage to push through.

And Commitment. It is the follow through. Commitment is doing the thing we said we would do when we felt committed, long after we no longer feel committed.

Next week, I will offer my own concluding thoughts on this topic of change, for now. In fact, I will be sharing my own (by then, well articulated) personal plan for truly conscious change in one key area of my life; health.

But change is a constant in life. Our own conscious change requires Courage and Commitment.

TOGETHER

So, we will continue. We will continue to be committed to living a joyful life and work.  Friends do that.  For December, we will be taking a bit of a break but sharing some thoughts along the way. We certainly will continue to explore our own perspectives on love and character and how they can build a life of work, play and service that is right for each and all of us.

The End of Empathy?

Last week, we continued our exploration of Empathy with Empathy and Detachment. Before that, we shared on The First Empathy. Before that, we looked at The Road to Empathy. This week, we finish our exploration.

Jenny says…

I am a strong believer in the fact that we are what we eat. It goes the same for what we believe. We are the vessel that carries all morals and values that we believe in. We demonstrate said beliefs through the way that we treat people. We show people who we are by acting a certain way. By loving hard, or not loving at all. We can be known as a light source, or someone that sucks the energy from the light source. We all have the ability to reign in our emotional reactions. If someone decided to be hurtful towards us, rather than lashing out and reacting in a negative way, would it not be better to look at the light sucker and say “I am really sorry that you are hurting so much that you feel the need to hurt others” or “I am sorry that you feel that way”. Why should we give in any more of our precious energy? When we allow our energy to be depleted, we soak in a little negative. We begin to hate ourselves a little more, we plant seeds in our mind that what these people are saying to us is true. Yet it is not. Not close. We are all worth the beauty that the world has to offer. No one should ever be allowed to take that from us.

I explained to my son the night that we had dealt with this issue, that we are all like candles. People that don’t have the skills to know how to treat one another are like a dark cloud that blows wind around us. We as the candle can either allow our flame to be blown out, or we can shelter and protect it. That way our flames burns bright and strong.

I will forever remind all of you, each and every day, of how worthy that you are to have that bright, beautiful flame burning. Do not allow anyone to blow that flame out. Keep burning brightly. Be that light that the world so desperately needs.

Barry says…

Empathy is an interesting virtue. This has been a very interesting deeper dive for me; understanding its power to feel my own feelings and to cut others the slack needed, while I do so.

It is a power that is available to us all, in and through practice. It is important to develop it. It allows us to effectively discern situations by feeling for ourselves and others. With it, we can better determine whether we had a role in someone’s hurt or not. Empathy with Discipline and Discernment can help us know the difference in guilt and shame. Guilt says “I made a mistake”. Shames says “I am a mistake”. If I hurt you, Empathy will allow me to see my guilt and address the situation. Empathy, with Discipline and Discernment, will also allow me to recognize when I am shaming myself or another.

Empathy is not simply “feeling”. It is feeling for another. As I have noted before, that “other” can be ourselves. But Empathy is powerful in how we understand our interconnection with and impact upon others. Empathy is not weak. Nor, is it a special talent only for some. It is a power that we can and must develop in order to lead healthier, better connected lives within and with others. It can powerfully guide our best responses. It can constructively impact our own endurance. It demands Courage and Honesty; but it is a worthy investment.

TOGETHER

So, we continue. Is this the end of our exploration of Empathy? Probably not. We continue to be committed to living a joyful life and work.  Friends do that.  For December, we will be taking a bit of a break but sharing some thoughts along the way. We certainly will continue to explore our own perspectives on love and character and how they can build a life of work, play and service that is right for each and all of us.  Stay with us.
