An “August” Trilogy

Recently, we posted the broadCAST for August, on magnificence.  It is worth a read, we contend.  In it, and at its beginning, we say “The word august references ideas such as deep respect, reverence, awe, dignity, wonder and magnificence.”

With that in mind, and the Benny and Jarry blogs to date… we begin a trilogy of sorts; three blog posts for August 14, 21 1nd 28.  The first is simple, short and hopefully sweet.  Here, we will briefly chat on a friendship retreat we and another great friend, Karen, are taking over the coming few days.  The second will be a deconstruct on thoughts and even revelations after such.  The third will be a launch into a whole new era with the Benny and Jarry blog, around which we are very excited.

So and first, yes over these next few days, we engage a full on retreat, as great friends.  There promises to be music and fires and food and great conversations with so very little planning.  There promises to be soulful conversations and laughter.  There promises to be a retreat and advance.  The retreat is physical and mental, getting away from the patterns of life we all find ourselves in to one extent or another.  The advance is in advancing deeper, cooler friendship and dreams.

That is the beautiful promise of this time ahead.  Stephen Covey once asked, “Have you ever been too busy driving to stop for gas?”  We suggest that this is a poignant, powerful little question.  Life is life, and we must live it at life’s speed.  It is the ultimate role play and impromptu.  Still, it is vital to disconnect and step outside of the play that we are in… to almost become an observer… to connect soul to soul.  Why? Well, there are many thoughts on sameWe suggest, therein, we find a deeper joy.  We can get real and raw.  Therein, we connect with our dreams.  Therein, we find our gas stop.  Therein, we get to Soul; the spiritual odyssey understanding life.  🙂

For us, this gas stop will probably involve singing and dancing, soulful and beautiful conversations around the fire, (God willing ) starry nights, good food, wonderful smiles, dreams, lots of laughter, the odd (or maybe more) selfie, and the best of friendships.  It will not involve agendas and itineraries nor excessive expectations.  It will involve three friends being friends, trusting in the safety, synergy and simplicity of our friendship.  We look forward, but will live present.  And, we will share on the memories created and ideas born.

Our question to you is “When is the last time you truly retreated with great friends?”  A follow up might be “When and how can you plan your next?”

See you soon, and after.  🙂

Love and Character

In our last post, From Jenny, with Love, we commenced a journey; a new chapter with Benny and Jarry (aka Barry and Jenny lol).

Going forward, we will write on character, love, unity and excellence as it relates to living and working and serving and playing our lives away; whether as educators, entrepreneurs, emerging leaders or anyone looking to get more out of life by giving more to the lives of themselves and others.

Each week, we will offer up thoughts on the journey of Love and Character.  We suggest that Character + Love = Unity = Excellence.  We contend that Love and Character combine to produce palpable, powerful, practical Unity at school, work, business and community… that advances Excellence.

And we share thoughts here.

JENNY says

As I sit here tonight, with my freshly washed face and hair in a ponytail, I reflect on this beautiful, life changing week. My heart is happy. Although it has been for a couple years now. That being said, it has been a journey. A journey of awareness, of self-acceptance, of hardcore, no pussy footin’ around kind of honesty with myself and others. It has been joyous, and raw and real. And I continue to see the world through different lenses… the more I love myself, the more I am loving everyone else.

Don’t get me wrong, there are times I want to lay a smackdown on some people, but guess what??? This new and improved Jenny 2.0 has patience and awareness that I never thought I would be armed with. I am unstoppable.

Ok, let’s get down to the nitty gritty here.

I WAS NOT always this way, believe me. I never knew what it was to love me completely. Until these past few years. It took a swift kick in the ass for me to see who I am and all I have to offer. I guess what I am getting at is that I would ideally love to say that it only takes a few easy steps, but no I am not going to pussy foot around with you either. It is tough.

It is tough.  Your self-doubt and self-loathing will test you. Will scream loudly the moment you begin to think “Hell ya, I am worth it.” It may even kick you down and throw dirt in your face time and time again. But that is just a small little piece of what will make you the kick-ass warrior that you will become.

I have no doubt that if I can achieve this love within myself, anyone can. I want to share my journey with you, I want you to share yours with me. I want you to know how damn important that you are in this world. That YOU are worth all of your own love.

We give so freely to others. And it is a beautiful thing. Don’t ever water that part of yourself down. But start loving yourself the same way. Be empathetic towards your life experiences. Don’t judge yourself in such a harsh way. Be gentle with your heart. You are so precious.

And I hope that this blog that I am just starting helps guide you to that place somehow. This is a journey, for not only me, but for all you beautiful souls reading this. This may not flow, each week I might have a different topic. But there will always be a taste of self-love, appreciation for yourself and others, notes on how to work on becoming more in tune with all your loving qualities, and just random messages on love in general.

What we so desperately need in the world.

So, join me on this journey of falling in love with everything life has to offer, including ourselves <3

Barry says

I love the message Jenny brings.  I love the fact that we are writing together going forward.  I love who Jenny is and for what she stands.  I love our incredible friendship and the work and play and life that unfolds from it.  Indeed, I love my life.  I get to teach business at the college level. I get to do this beautiful work with Epic Engage™.  I get to speak, teach, facilitate, coach, consult, create, sing, dance, write, blog, vlog and more… and with Jenny.  I love it, all.  I love my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda, and my modest beautiful little home I call The Greens.  I love my life.

We just completed an incredible retreat centering on the work of The Virtues Project™… exploring the 5 Strategies for building lives and cultures of character (I will share more as the weeks and months go by).   I often suggest that Love is a virtue.  It is an emotion.  And it is action.  I suggest that L.O.V.E. is about the practice of character.  LOOK inside yourself for your strengths of character.  Identify them.  Name them, Claim them.  Then, seek out OPPORTUNITIES where they are most needed.  Discover what work, jobs, careers and vocations require them.  Discover what services and hobbies demand them.  Yes, identify your strengths of character and to where they are most called.  Then, have a VISION in your head and heart as to how the world, or your corner of it, will be better when you do apply your strengths to those opportunities.  Then, simply ENGAGE.  Do it.  That is how we L.O.V.E. our work.  That is how we L.O.V.E. our service, and play and school and community and life.  We look inside for our strengths of character, seek out opportunities where they are needed most, have a vision of their impact, and engage.  Indeed, that is the Epic Engage™.

I have been in this work of leadership training and development for 39 years.  I have earned my stripes the great, good, bad and ugly ways.  I have L.O.V.E.d every minute of it.  The errors have been teachers, getting me to consider what strengths of character I better needed to practice.  The successes have been teachers in celebrating those I have practiced.  Character has its teachable moments and L.O.V.E. requires character.

In times of trial, I have asked myself what strength of character were either missing or not being practiced, with the notion of putting them into practice.  In times of triumph, I have asked myself what strengths of character were present in order to replicate, going forward.

Character is the soil from which the tree of behaviour grows.  Pay attention to the soil and the tree will take care of itself.  Ask yourself, in any given situation, what virtues were present or what were not.  Ask yourself what do you need to continue practicing or start to practice.  Character is about practice.  Practice makes permanent.  Challenges teach us when we practice character.  Successes celebrate our best selves when we practice character.

My life has not been easy.  Very few of us can say life ever truly is.  Life has its challenges.  It also has its growth, resulting from same.  It has joy and love and so much more.  It certainly has for me.  Going forward, I will be sharing examples of L.O.V.E. in action.  I will be writing, with Jenny, on love and character and their twin powers to advance real, raw and results driven living.  This will be a sincere and simple exploration of the role character plays in our lives.  I am excited to explore.  Hope you are!

From Jenny, with Love

In our last post, A New Chapter with Benny and Jarry, we announced just that… a new chapter with Benny and Jarry (aka Barry and Jenny lol).  Going forward, we will write on character, love, unity and excellence as it relates to living and working and serving and playing our lives away; whether as educators, entrepreneurs, emerging leaders or anyone looking to get more out of life by giving more to the lives of themselves and others.  But first, let us introduce ourselves for this next chapter.

This week, Jenny offers up…

The reality of self-love is very important to our living our best lives. Our body is our home; we simply can’t live in it peacefully if we continue to destroy it. We need to be openly accepting our flaws because the reality is at the end of the day, the only person you truly have is yourself. And we need to be stronger for ourselves (Alyssa Lexine. Thought catalog. Aug 2016).

We need to be kinder to ourselves, allowing room for growth and error. Giving ourselves permission to mess up and make mistakes without chastising the person that matters the most; You, your own self.

We are beings of light and love. We so often freely love others, but we hardly take the time to recognize it for ourselves.

We are so quick to say when someone doesn’t love us the way we wish to be loved. Why are we waiting for them to step up and love us? When in all reality we have the power to do it on our own. We get to set our own standards on how we deserve to be loved, and by doing so we don’t have to accept anything less from others or ourselves.

Now to start this journey of falling completely in love with ourselves; realizing the importance of self-love is the first step to bettering your life. Here are just a few tips to get you started.

First and foremost, define your own beauty. Love yourself now by first accepting yourself the way you are. Change your focus to the thing that is most important. Start with one small thing about yourself and decide to love it. You don’t need to be perfect, but it’s uniquely you. Maybe begin with your eyes because you have seen so many beautiful things, while enduring all the tears you have cried.

Next, change your self-talk. That little voice in your head that drags you down needs to be changed. You wouldn’t speak that way to someone you love, so what makes it okay to say it to yourself? Replace that negative self-talk with something uplifting. When you make a mistake, try an encouraging phrase like, “It’s ok! I’ll try again.”

Also, don’t forget to pamper yourself. When your feet get wet, go home and put dry socks on. Be more aware of your physical condition and do things to comfort yourself. Warm up the water before washing your hands. Sit down when you are tired.

These are small ways to let yourself know that your comfort and well- being are important (Wendy G, Brookhaven, April 2017).

Don’t forget to spoil yourself regularly. Have a bath, do your nails, put on a face mask, wear your sexy underwear for yourself, or take yourself on a date. Act as if you are completely in love with yourself. Speak, eat, drink, dress and treat yourself as if you were your most loving fan, best friend, and lover all at once. Finally, take things lightly. Don’t be too serious. Make sure to laugh and have lots of fun. Even if you just fake it in the beginning, you will reap benefits. Fake it till you make it. (Lea, Life Coach, Feb 2015).

In the end (and the beginning, and throughout), love matters.  Love directed to others matters.  Love directed to ourselves matters.  Going forward, I will be sharing thoughts on perspectives on the who, what, why, when and how of practicing the strength that is Love.

A New Chapter with Benny and Jarry

Last week, I posted on My Summer CAMP.  In it, and among other things, I suggested that, “My thought to you is four-fold.

  • Cleansing of mind, body and spirit requires honesty, openness and courage.
  • Doing so is an investment.
  • Doing so requires us to be open, adaptive and relentless (your OARs in the water).
  • The return is high, on Clarity and Confidence.”

Such as been born out this past week, with changes coming to Epic Engage™ and how and why and with whom we work it.  One of the first changes is to this blog.  Going forward, much of my own work will be with my best friend and comrade in arms, Jenny Dearing.  You will learn more of Jenny in the days and weeks to come but our work together is driven by the advancement of character, love, unity and excellence.  What does that mean?  You will find out soon.

For now, let me suggest that I am personally more clear than ever on what Epic Engage™ stands and works and serves for, going forward.  Here, the blog will be known as Benny and Jarry, to represent the combined work of two best friends with passions and capacities for work that matters to both of us.  More important for now, it is a reminder that my question to you last week still stands.

How can you see yourself cleansing and getting to the essentials How can do CAMP?  How can you have those cool, meaningful conversations with those you deeply trust… to explore who you are and what has most meaning. How can you take actions needed to align in accordance?  How can you meditate on such, nay even pray?  I am thinking July and August will continue to be CAMP, for me…. as I get ever more clear on the work, service and play ahead.

Stay tuned for the first of Benny and Jarry, and look forward to a fierce and fun mission and service as we move forward together, stronger.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

My Best Contract

Some time ago, I referenced the notion of dealing with the ducks.  So many things can grab our attention and disrupt and distract… and more… taking our eyes off the prize.  Of late, I have been experiencing the culmination of a strategic reflection over the last year or so in particular; a reflection intended to get a sharper focus on the most important path for me.  A manifestation of that culmination is found in Manifest, Oh!.  In so getting to this space of late, I have been exploring patience in posts on:

The journey has had a last minute spurring from a reading and reflection on:

I offer these up for two reasons.  First, I humbly suggest each is worth a read and reflect as stand alone.  Second, the value in my own going back on what I have written is not lost on me.  When we record, we must always remember that there is value in the review and reflect.  Record, review and reflect offer a powerful, simple process for learning.  I might suggest that record, review, reflect and re-engineer are a powerful foursome.  I guess I just did.  🙂

That being said, in Manifest, Oh!… I stated that:

A manifesto is a published declaration of the intentions and motives. Mine now goes something like this.

  • I believe in humanity and its future and I am prepared to stand for it in faith, thought, will and action. It is my best birthright. I believe it to be all of ours. I unapologetically believe in the nobility of the human spirit and choose to explore and celebrate humanity and the best and truest of heroism, humility, helpfulness and humor. Yup, there is a bunch of H factors worth hoisting and honoring. In so believing…
  • I teach business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and love my global work with Epic Engage™.
  • I work with noble minded and hearted leaducators, communitrepreneurs and emergents in advancing character leadership and unity building.
  • I deliver in English, Mandarin and French to bring that work to the world.
  • I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.
  • I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love. My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all.
  • I am 110K in weight (slim for my body structure) and benching same; healthy and strong. And, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.
  • I am loving it! All!

My 90 day strategic plans for 20022020 as referenced in 2019, Here We Come… they remain, and aligned.  Having a powerful set of 90 day plans aligned with a truly resonant vision is a powerful thing as well.  This is why I suggest some rereads of the above, on and of your own.  But, the core of this blog is truly around an a-ha for me this morning.

My Best Contract

Years ago, I discovered this prayer by Abdu’l-Bahá.  I fell in love with it, and then, after a time, took it for granted somewhat.  In saying it this morning, I realized that it is a contract between God and myself. Let me explain.

What I ask of God is this:

O God!  Refresh and gladden my spirit.  Purify my heart.  Illumine my powers.

What I promise to God is this:

I lay all my affairs in Thy hand.

What I expect of God is this:

Thou art my Guide and my Refuge.

What I commit to God is this:

I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved; I will be a happy and joyful being.  O God!  I will no longer be full of anxiety, nor will I let trouble harass me.  I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life.

What I accept from God is this:

O God!  Thou art more friend to me than I am to myself.

What I give to God is this:

I dedicate myself to Thee, O Lord.

As a Baha’i, I see God as no “man in the sky”, but an unknowable and truly sentient force that is in ultimate control.  Maybe, the ultimate mathematician. 🙂

That being said, I have my free will, or I would not be choosing to offer up what I do in this prayer.  I could chose not to do so.  That is my right, and responsibility.

So, why is this important?  For me, I now see that the path towards my Vision 20022020 with its 90 day strategic plans, and the living of my manifesto, must needs be best guided by this contract in the form of this prayer.  As I walk resolute towards, I need to remember what I ask and what I promise.

I Ask, Expect and Request

  • I ask to have my spirit refreshed and gladdened, my heart purified of questionable motives, and my powers illumined.  I ask and expect that God be my Guide and Refuge.  I ask and recognize that God be my better friend.

I Promise

  • I promise that I will lay all my affairs in the “hand of God”.  I promise, in so doing, that I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved and that I will be a happy and joyful being.  I promise that I will no longer be full of anxiety, nor will I let trouble harass me.  I promise that I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life.  Full of anxiety and dwelling on the unpleasant is my promise to avoid.  It does not imply that I will be free of same but that I will not dwell there.  That is significant.  I will have my moments but I will not stay there.  Most of all it means that I promise myself to my best understanding of God.

Whether this resonates for you or not, it does for me.  Whether prayer and God resonate for you or not, there is value in understanding that:

  • a powerful and resonant vision is important
  • 90 day strategic plans are very useful in getting there, and
  • a “spiritual” contract or commitment to guide the walk is advisable.

I have my vision, my plans and now my contract.  Time to up the work and business.

Peace, passion and prosperity…

Barry Lewis Green, aka The Unity Guy

2019, Here We Come

A WISH

Today, I found myself at the top of Signal Hill taking in the view of St. John’s and Mount Pearl and Cape Spear and the North Atlanticand the sight of Cabot Tower itself.  That Tower is and has been such a vantage point for so very long.  There I was … me, my music, and the wondrous view… and my thoughts.  One of those thoughts was a sincere wish.

I wish you Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, however you might celebrate this time of year.  Whether Christmas or Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or Festivus, Winter Solstice or… you get the picture; I hope you truly find joy in it, for you and those you love.

THOUGHT TOO: Reflection

And there were other thoughts. Just before Christmas, I wrote on my Pre-Flight Check.  It was and is the culmination (thus far) of a journey towards what I am calling my 20022020 Vision.  That vision, set out several months back and focusing on celebrating my 60th birthday, remains:

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery and more of what and who I love.  My #bestlittledogintheworld Panda is by my side in enjoying it all.  I am teaching business leadership at College of the North Atlantic, in class and online; and doing my global work of Epic Engage™. I am loving it!  I am 110K in weight (slim for my body structure) and benching same; healthy and strong. And, I am financially ready, willing and able to support special projects in which I deeply want to invest and contribute.

On November 15, I set out what I called and call my 90 Day Snapshots in GREAT Goals and The Hunt;  90 day plans that serve to build towards that vision. During these past few days, I have reflected on my progress with those snapshots.  Here is what I have found.

  • GOOD.  I am walking as a daily student of the practice of character, unity and spirit… having completed my Ruhi Studies Book 1 and prepared my study library on character and unity. I have secured learning resources for conversational Mandarin and French.  I have completed my latest MUN course with a grade of 92 (a 90 average over three courses thus far).  I have been singing, writing and living daily, with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda… and finding new and challenging songs to expand my repertoire, if you will.
  • GOOD. Over this week, I am re-launching the new Epic Engage™ in January, with Project Black Wing™ for launch January 1, 2019, DELIVER™ sessions and Thinking CAPS™ national chats planned… and NLAWS™ and Speakernet officially launching January 1, 2019.
  • GOOD. Thus far this past Fall, I have also developed strong connections with the business development community, including MBO, Futurpreneur, and NLOWE… and have successfully completed the Fall term, teaching business leadership at college.
  • GOOD. AND, I am this week completing my 20022020 W.E.A.L.T.H.™ Plan.

And then…

  • GOOD kind of, in learning. Finally, we made the strategic decision to cease momondays St. John’s under our leadership and focus our best energies on other projects in 2019.

THE NOT SO GOOD, but GETTING BETTER.  All in all, it has been a productive first swing and Fall, and I am pleased with the effect of having a 90-Day Snapshot with which to work.  The one gaping misfire is on “I have a 38 inch waist, eating “more than right”, walking daily” and that is being resolutely addressed with a new and vigorous plan for 2019.  Strategic thinking requires that.

LEARNINGS

All of that is to say that this time, during this week, has already served to be a great check in as I prepare for 2019. What I have re-learned is that:

  • a powerful, personal, relevant and resonant vision is the basis for great motivation and commitment.  Any moving vision must have real meaning … for ourselves.  Anything less is a waste of time and talent.
  • 90 day snapshot visions help make the long term vision less daunting.  Think of them as clear and manageable building blocks or grocery lists where you can focus on getting them achieved or completed… knowing that, by doing so, you are moving towards your bigger vision.  I think Matthew McConaughey speaks to such here.
  • execution is everything.  “Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.”

And so, I am opting to reset with revised snapshots running from January 1 2019 through to February 20 2020… some 416 days.  I offer these now for myself and in the spirit of accountability… and for you in seeing examples of what such snapshots can possibly look like; simple or otherwise.

Then, and below, I offer some thoughts for the New Year.

February 20, 2020… CELEBRATE!

That day will be a celebration; a genuine and powerful and joyful one.  Fully realizing living the life I soulfully believe that I am called and drawn to is a gift… and one that is earned.  With that in mind…

CLOSING THOUGHTS

As 2019 approaches for us all, I am not one to believe that life is meant to be magically “abundant”.  It is meant to be filled with up’s and down’s, in’s and out’s, yin’s and yang’s.  It is meant to be lived.  But, it is best lived intentionally.  We cannot control the waves but we can ride them and sail them.  We cannot control those ducks but we can lead them.  It requires that we get clear on where our soul knows we need to be… whether at work, school, business, community or life.  That requires truthfulness and courage … to even ask, admit and accept.

It requires us to know that work is involved and demanded.  It requires us to understand the vital importance of character.  It demands that we find people who believe in us.  It demands we do it in a world that might not yet believe in us.

Nine words have come through reflective and prayerful meditation this year, for me.  “Everything requires everything. To be ready, do the work.”  I believe that I am getting ever closer to fully understanding their meaning.

That is my journey for 2019.  How about you?

2019, here we come.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

NOW: November Reign

Last week, I wrote on Optimist Primed and Ready.  I think it worth a read and reflect.  For me. 🙂  I also wrote on my 3 Cents on Leadership.  Another reread for me.  I need to reread and reflect… and munch on these yet again.

This week has been eventful.  With work on the new Epic Speakernet™ we are launching and my full slate of work, there have been successes indeed; milestones in the making.  But this week has also tested Optimism.  That being said, Optimism is up to it.

Optimism is not about ignoring problems.  It is not about avoiding the negative.  It is about recognizing the good, the bad and the ugly… and knowing “we got this”.  That requires a range of virtues including Detachment, Patience, Faith, Trust, Determination, Steadfastness, Flexibility, Endurance, Forbearance, Fortitude, Courage, Resilience, Integrity and more.  I say this because virtues are latent within us.  They but need practice.  Practice makes permanent.

Back on September 26, it was world Character Day.  I love the fact that there is a recognition of its importance, and the need for it in this world.  We need character every day.  That requires, nay demands, practice.  If you have ever wished or prayed for more patience, I suggest two things.  First, don’t be surprised if the world gives you an opportunity to practice it.  Second, you do not simply receive Patience.  You practice it.  You work at it, like any craft.

Every virtue is latent within us, in potential.  To develop them, we need practice them.  We practice Acceptance and Confidence and Joyfulness.  We practice Strength and Unity.  Practice makes permanent and we are building a deeper understanding and mastery of a virtue as we become it’s student.  Character matters; and it requires work.

So, yes… this week tested my Optimism.  But, that is the point.  It remains within me.  It always has.  Indeed and now, its access is strengthened.  I am even better at putting it into practice now.  I have always found it a natural virtue for me but now I understand a deeper dive on it.  Optimism shines in the face of trial.

So, for November, I am running a very personal journey called November Reign.  I will spend the next 30 days working on my vision with a fierce and defiant Optimism.  I will own it.  It will be my reign.  Actually, and more specifically, it will be a reign of Nobility, Optimism and Wholeheartedness (NOW).  I will be the poster child for being a student of these three… Nobility in seeing and honoring the best in life, Optimism in living it, and Wholeheartedness in the energy I bring to it.  I will live my slightly and newly updated 20022020 vision of…

  • It is 20022020, and I am a master and lifelong student of the global body of work around character leadership and unity building.  I have learned conversational Mandarin and French to bring that work more global.  I have also engaged a deepened level of spiritual studies and practice through The Ruhi Institute, and more.  I am living a life filled with love, song, dance, cartooning, writing, epic stories, archery, boxing and more of what and who I love.

… as if it already has manifested.  It has.  I will walk this month fired up with the practice of Nobility, Optimism, and Wholeheartedness strengthened by Certitude.

More specifically, for November…

  • I will walk as a student of character
  • I will learn the very basics of conversational Mandarin
  • I will prayerfully engage in my Ruhi studies
  • I will sing, write, and live with my #bestlittledogintheworld Panda
  • I will teach business leadership at college and do my thing with Epic Engage™
  • I will eat “more than right” and walk daily.

I will.  I will listen to The Hero Within… and a slate of Shinedown tunes like I Dare You… they are my band after all … and Wake Up … and more.  I will listen to MY music, not in some superficial pumping up kind of way … but to feed my soul.  I will reinforce the insatiable hunger for Optimism that already resides within.

I am inviting you to join me on November Reign.  It requires nothing but to take on your battle cry. Where do you need to BRING IT this month?  I mean bring it.  What do you need to do this month that will send one big cool ball hurtling into motion?

Yes, this week has had cool and great moments and conversations; and it has had walls to climb.  Yeah, Optimism is practiced.  It is built, with work.  It shines greatest when tested.  It shines greatest when we deal with the walls.  These times in which we live are a test.  But Optimism is up for it.  I am too.  How about you?

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Being You is Not a Science

The past couple of weeks or so, I have been exploring strategy; particularly that of being you.  It was explored in:

And then, this morning, I came across this on HIRE ME.  IMHO, brilliant.  🙂  Yet, I see some of the comments saying that others would try this.  Creativity is not copying.  Individuality is not mimicking.  Being you is not hitching a ride on the coat tails of someone you admire.  It is a courageous and truthful exploration of who the hell you truly are, at your best.

Prince knew it.

He sung of it.

Being you is not a science, but an art.  It is an exploration of the now.  Our best branding, personally and professionally, is grounded in it.  As we do, we are known.

This Monday, I speak on it.  At MoMondays, I share the stage with Krista Walsh, Jon Butler, Christa Steeves and Suzanne Bloodworth.  I am looking forward to the messages of these wonderful and talented people.  My own message will be a deep, cool and even fun dive into finding that clear focus of you.  I hope you join me and us for a fun evening of exploring inspiration.  Tickets are apparently online ’til this evening… then $20 at the door.  It will be a great evening.

Ultimately: Be you, and see where that takes you.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Promoting Healthy Minds and Wellness

The last time I blogged here, I chatted on nightmarish classes.  Then, today on LinkedIn, I wrote on a deeper kind of cute.  The common thread is what goes on in our head, and how we foster and advance healthy minds and wellness.  I invite you to read both, and reflect upon same… hot on the heels of #BellLetsTalk.

These days, I am finding my work on my own physical health to be part of that process.  After plateauing, I am now at a 42″ waist and feeling stronger… and the journey continues.

That being said, on Wednesday, February 21 (one day after my 58th birthday and a time I intend to be approaching a 40″ waist), I am excited to say CAPS will be offering a public event at the College of the North Atlantic… and I will be sharing on my own thoughts and perspectives and experience around healthy minds and wellness.

The event will be in the L201 Lecture Theater of the Prince Phillip Drive Campus of the College, running 7:00-8:00 pm.  More details to follow, but admission is FREE, and you can reserve a seat by emailing here.  Ultimately you will walk away with five simple but powerful strategies for advancing healthy minds and wellness; strategies I use personally on my own road.

Then, going forward, CAPS will be offering monthly free events on Promoting Healthy Minds and Wellness.

Hoping you join us on the journey of talking and listening.

Peace, passion and prosperity.

Steadfast and Flexible

Some two weeks back, I offered This is Day One:  The Journal Begins.  In it, I said, among other things…

  • “On December 31, I posted this wish of Happy 2018!  Within it, I offered thoughts on 5 strategies for the incoming year.  I believe it worth a read and viewing… and reflection.  If making this an authentic and great year is important, I doubly suggest so.
  • The C.A.S.T.™ also, collectively, offered this post on 10 perspectives on goals and their achievement; and I humbly but strongly recommend the read as well.  There are views and thoughts worth the time, plus music and message that can add to your launch into 2018.”

I offer this to say, “How is your new year going thus far?”

What is it bringing you?  What are you bringing to it?  Is it more of the same ol’ same ol’?  If so, what needs changing?  Are the challenges heightened?  If so, what needs to be called upon within you to rise to those challenges, in whatever healthy form?  Is it going great, full on and better than expected?  How can you best ride that wave to ensure sustainability as best you can?

Either way…

… the arbitrary changing of dates does not necessarily change anything; as much as the fireworks might say otherwise.  The 1st of the year is but a convenient anchor point for a somewhat inconvenient truth.  Much of it is our choice.  It is our choice in terms of how we act and respond.  It is our choice in terms of how much we accept and do not.  It is our choice to get back on the horse or not.  That is our responsibility… our response ability.

I heard it said years ago that every diet works.  Some are healthier than others, but every diet works… if we avoid the one fatal step.  When we fall off, however briefly, do we give up or get back at it?  The nutritional counselor in the radio interview said that, if we do well for 6 days and bad for one…. we will be successful… if we get back at it.  This is true of anything as goal.

It is true in matters of business, health, job hunting, and more.

For me…

I entered this year, with great progress in my walking… 105,000-120,000 steps a week.  A week ago, my left ankle pulled and I have had to bring things back.  But I adjusted, both exercise and diet (not a “diet”, my food intake).  I remain eating healthy and walking to a lesser degree, for now.  The result?

I sit here, writing, in pants that are 42″ waist, down from a max of almost 50″ at one point.  I am in an online exercise and walking group using Fitbit, and I am even guest hosting some online exercise classes for my friend Krista Walsh… aaagh.  I am adapting and reducing and managing this journey.  I am making better choices.

Steadfastness and Flexibility

This is the one area for the last almost 20 years that has been challenging.  It was challenging because (a) I never found the answer that worked for my temperament (until now) and because, in the past, when I fell off, I did not successfully reset.  I did not adjust.

Darwin never actually said it was “survival of the fittest”.  He essentially said it was survival of the most adaptable.  Rivers get where they are going… they may meander, go to trickles, then rapids and falls but they get where they are going.

All of this is to say that steadfastness and flexibility are important elements of our growth.  They are heroic in nature.  We learn and adapt but we do not give up.  Wherever you are with your goals, know that this is always DAY ONE.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
