From Barry

Character Matters

Consider this piece on The Character of Leadership from The Ivey Business Journal.  Within… are two quotes to anchor the piece.

“I have a dream today . . . I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.” —  Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“When I went to management school 20 years ago, I thought it was about personality, desire, determination, and a little bit of technique. I didn’t actually realize it was about character, and that struck me more as I have gone along . . . The leaders whom people respect and will follow have the characteristics of being themselves, of being passionate about what they are doing, communicating that in a heartfelt way that touches hearts.” — Theresa Gattung, CEO of Telecom NZ

We also invite you to consider Developing Leadership Character from the Ivey Business Journal.   Within it, you will find the following, amongst a great deal more.

  • “Our own research on the failures of leadership points to issues around character as a central theme[3].  Nowhere was this more obvious than in the financial crisis of 2008 – 2009, in which boldness or instant gratification triumphed over temperance.  People who knew that bad risks were being taken did not have the courage and/or confidence to speak up, and people without integrity sold mortgages to those who could not pay them.  They then bundled these mortgages into securities that were fraudulent and sold to others.  People with large egos, lacking in humility, oblivious to the harm they may have been be doing to others or the societies in which they operated, became very rich at the expense of millions who were the victims of the financial crisis and subsequent recession.  Yet, to this day, these same people seem unable or unwilling to accept any degree of responsibility for their actions.  Leaders of large, global companies knew about these types of practices yet did nothing to stop them.  Still others were unable to create the honest, transparent corporate culture that would enable them to be in touch with what was happening deep down in the organization.  All these behaviors and activities were, essentially, failings of character.”

We believe and contend that character matters; and character is not about simply being someone’s definition of morally good.  It is, in essence, about what Simon Anholt refers to as being good.

And so….

From Trent

A Collective VISION

The success of your team (and the individual players within) is contingent on having a ‘presence’ on the local, regional, and global field of play. Though your practice may be based locally or regionally, a global awareness (or moral ‘presence’) provides a foundational strength to enhance your impact.

————-

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Our governments have a plan to save our planet… it’s our job to make sure they stick to it.

The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

www.globalgoals.org

In recent months, I have valued following the work of the Global Goals Educator Task Force. Their mission is as follows:

We, the Global Goals Educator Task Force, in partnership with the United Nations, aim to strengthen the voice of the Educator in their sessions, meetings, and events pertaining to the Sustainable Development Goals. We seek a world where every child learns about the inspiring Global Goals — and we welcome any and all partners and opportunities that move us all closer to this objective. We recruit teachers, gather data, cherish ideas, and submit recommendations directly to the UN annually. Passionate about policy, advocacy, innovation, design thinking, and best practices in global education, we bring diverse perspectives and deep commitment to the SDGs and the children of our world.

You can explore the Sustainable Development Goals at www.teachsdgs.org and on Twitter @TeachSDGs (A global movement of teachers pledging to #TeachSDGs; a Task Force of volunteers partnered with the UN to serve @TheGlobalGoals & @TheWorldsLesson).

Within my own scope of practice as an educator and school counselor, I have adopted these SDGs to keep my efforts focused and effective:

#3. Good Health & Well-Being

#4. Quality Education

#10. Reduced Inequalities,

#16. Peace & Justice.

I challenge you to become a part of this growing online community by taking the SDG pledge and to incorporate the SDGs into your school’s objectives, your business’ / organization’s blueprint, or your personal leadership goals.

Leader ToC with Krista T Walsh

This month, with our fourth in the series of Leader ToC™ Blog Posts for 2017, we interview the inimitable Krista T. Walsh of KC Collect and beyond.

Krista is a rising star in the speaking community and a good and new friend and colleague.  I am excited to have her join the conversation at Leader ToC™ .  That being said, Leader ToC™ (Thoughts on Character) is our monthly series engaging leaders around the world on character, leadership and more.

But still… before we actually get started this month, here are:

That means… this month makes our tenth issue!!!  We are truly thankful, and look forward to continuing the learning journey; and having you with us.  We hope you engage and enjoy.

INTRODUCING KRISTA T. WALSH

We are indeed proud to say Krista is one of the newest members of The CAST™.  Here is just a little of what we know of Krista.

KRISTA T. WALSH is about productivity and creating cash flow.  Krista is an award winning entrepreneur, author and speaker. From dental assistant drop out, to family business builder, to emerging leader for Atlantic Canada (twice), Krista will share her journey from failure to success and explore how to increase your cash flow and productivity.  In 2005 Krista established “KC COLLECT,” a credit, collection and resource company. It would be the first and only female-owned collection agency in Atlantic Canada.  Krista’s informative presentations engage and challenge audiences to effectively manage and build their businesses, professional relationships, and enhance their profiles.  Andrew Oland- President, Moosehead Breweries says “Krista is a smart, dedicated and passionate woman. She is an engaging and practical presenter who adds tremendous value to any audience.”  Her breakout sessions will assist you in navigating the practical tools you can implement immediately to increase sales and productivity, enhance and build relationships, and strengthen and increase cash flow.  Krista’s determination and vision has been recognized by her peers and she has twice received the Atlantic Canadian Emerging Award as one of Canada’s leading young entrepreneurs.

So, let’s get at it to …

Engage the Leader ToC™

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Hey Krista!  Thanks so much for joining us on Leader ToC™.  Glad you agreed to be part of the conversation.  To start, I typically ask “Who are you and what is it you do?”

KRISTA T. WALSH

My pleasure Barry.  Bottom line is I am Krista T. Walsh, an Entrepreneur, Speaker, Author, and Fitness Instructor. Essentially, I am driven and direct, yet humorous and easy going.  🙂
BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Indeed. 🙂  I have come to know and see this in the time we have known each other.  For our readers, I would like to offer up some video selections that speak to this.  You offered this up on adding a spring in the step and this on loving what you do.  Very funny, direct and real… and brings a smile to my face.  Can’t wait to see your entry for May.  🙂  Still… with all of that that in mind… given who you are and what do you… for whom do you do it best?  In other words… who is your best audience?
KRISTA T. WALSH
Thanks Barry.  I enjoy doing those videos.  Essentially, my best audience includes aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, and accounts receivable managers.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

And how is it that you best serve them?  How do you offer your services?
KRISTA T. WALSH
Well, within my collection agency, KC Collect, we assist in creating cash flow for businesses. I am also a certified accounts receivable trainer, so I offer seminars in order for businesses to learn specific procedures and practices on efficient credit management.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

I admire your clarity and focus.  It shows such discernment and decisiveness; both powerful virtues in this field of training and development for sure.  Then, with your work and audience in mind, what are the challenges and opportunities of leadership, from your perspective and experience?
KRISTA T. WALSH
For me, I see the balancing and managing of various businesses and schedules. Taking time to relax. One of my friends compared me to a tornado – always moving and never still.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

I can relate and I can see that.  🙂  Given that, when reflecting on the strengths of leadership… what virtues do you consider to be paramount as strengths of character and why do you believe them vital?
KRISTA T. WALSH
Extremely organized, driven and goal orientated. They are paramount in developing success. And don’t have kids. 🙂

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Lol, I don’t and probably won’t now. 🙂  So, I am hearing orderliness. zeal and mindfulness.  I am hearing devotion and decisiveness.  I am hearing commitment and simplicity.  I am also witnessing in your work joyfulness and excellence.  That is quite the mix; powerful.  So, what is one piece of advice you might have for our readership on developing leadership and strength of character in these times?
KRISTA T. WALSH
I think it comes down to this.  Identify your skills early and choose a career that is going to challenge and inspire you. Love what you do – make your own schedule and take naps. 🙂
BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Wooooonderful.  Krista, that is all there is to the questions this day.  This has been a treat and joy.  I want to thank you so much for joining us on Leader ToC™.

KRISTA T. WALSH

I enjoyed it too.  Thanks Barry.

THIS MONTH

As we move into Spring, and longer days, here are some thoughts to ponder possibly.

With that last link in mind, and from last month, how did you apply:

  • C — a character strength that you…
  • L — like or admire
  • a — and
  • W — explain why you say that.

We suggested you use the formula to randomly identify and reinforce character strengths in others.  We suggested that you be honest and genuine in doing so. This is not flattery. This is courageously and truthfully seeing and naming strengths.  If you didn’t try it out, we invite you to go back to the February post and wrap your head around it. C.L.a.W.™ your way through it yourself and see. It will take determination and diligence, but it will pay dividends.

Building Strong Cultures @ Work

As you work to build cultures of excellence … and in your interactions with clients, colleagues and constituents alike… try this out. Take moments to identify in others:

  • C — a character strength that you…
  • L — like or admire
  • a — and
  • W — explain why you say that.

Be honest and genuine in doing so. This is not flattery. This is courageously and truthfully seeing and naming strengths. Once they are named, they can be claimed by the recipient; and that encourages and empowers in remarkable ways.

  • Complimenting and rewarding behaviour is transitory in nature and effect. It is catching and reinforcing an action.
  • Complimenting and appreciating character has a level of permanency beyond behaviour.

Character is deeply resonant and honoring it by naming it strikes chords that rewarding behaviour does not. That being said, behaviours can be indications of character; signposts if you will. Still, naming the strength of character we see and honor can go deeper than identifying positive behaviours. You can do both, but know that one goes deeper, is more resonant and has longer effect. C.L.a.W.™ your way through it yourself and see. It will take determination and diligence, but it will pay dividends.

Leader Talk.

NEWS and RESOURCES

From the Ivey Business Journal and its work on leadership there is a statement addressing character and judgment.  It notes that “Without judgment, leaders make flawed decisions, especially when they must act quickly in ambiguous situations, namely when faced with the many paradoxes that confront all leaders from time to time.”   With that in mind. here are some resources, we offer this month… as we start heading into 2017.

Leader ToC™ with Joe Calloway

This month, with our fifth in the series of Leader ToC™ Blog Posts, we interview the person I loosely, affectionately and accurately call my “unofficial mentor”, Joe CallowayLeader ToC™ (Thoughts on Character) is our monthly series engaging leaders around the world on character, leadership and more.  Before we get started this month, here is a LINKEDIN post that will catch you up on the series to date.

INTRODUCING JOE CALLOWAY

From his own site, here is some of what I know of Joe.  He is …

  • Executive In Residence at Belmont University’s Center For Entrepreneurship, which has been named as a national Top 25 Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program by the Princeton Review (for five consecutive years). The program was featured by Fortune magazine as one of five schools to consider when studying entrepreneurship.
  • Author of seven books on business performance, including Becoming A Category of One, Be The Best At What Matters Most, Magnetic: The Art Of Attracting Business, and the soon to be released Keep It Simple.
  • Consultant and advisor to business leaders, owners, and entrepreneurs.
  • Real estate investor/developer in projects throughout the mid-south.
  • Investor in and advisor to start-up companies which presently include Gilson Boards and EVAmore.co.
about-joe

Joe has presented at business conferences and events in countries around the world including Italy, Sweden, South Africa, England, Swaziland, Canada, Mexico and throughout the Caribbean. Although Joe has been inducted into the Speakers Hall of Fame, he doesn’t do traditional “speeches.” Instead, Joe actively engages people in highly interactive keynotes and workshops that challenge assumptions and create new ways of thinking.

Joe lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife, Annette, and their daughters, Jessica and Cate.

Personally, this I know and have experienced.  So, let us …

Engage the Leader ToC™

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Hi Joe, and thank you for graciously agreeing to share your thoughts through Leader ToC™.  To get us started, let me ask this.  Though I have long known of your work and we have had opportunities to chat over the last 5 years… for the benefit of those reading here, and myself… what is it that you do?

JOE CALLOWAY

A pleasure Barry.  Through books, presentations, workshops, and consulting, I help leaders in high performing companies maximize the potential of their organizations.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Joe, I have to say that I love the clarity and certitude of that statement.  Succinct and says it.  So, who do you best serve?

JOE CALLOWAY

Barry, I serve CEOs, entrepreneurs, owners, and senior level leaders in business, education, government and non-profits.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Personally, that validates my own choices; not that I sought validation lol… but it does.  I like how you have a broad but clear and focused audience.  It shows discernment and integrity.  So, in doing so, what are your thoughts on what makes for great leadership?

JOE CALLOWAY

In my experience, great leaders, above all, remind everyone of “who we are” and “what is important here.”  By “who we are,” I mean the culture of the organization, the way we have decided to behave with each other and with everyone with whom we interact.  Great leaders take the culture of the organization very, very seriously, and are diligent in protecting it.  By “what is important here,” I mean the goals of the organization and the strategies and tactics necessary to achieve these goals.  A great leader helps his or her people get absolute clarity on what is most important, thus enabling them to focus on what matters most in their actions.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

I could not agree more, and it is indeed part of the reason I love your work and the books you are producing.  It and they speak to this powerfully; and simply.  I am hearing simplicity, excellence, responsibility, clarity and accountability in what is needed.  So, what is one challenge you feel requires engaging leadership at this time?

JOE CALLOWAY

Thanks Barry.  I believe that the great and constant challenge today, more than ever before, is the challenge to continuously improve and innovate.  If that seems like a cliche’, well, there’s your challenge.  The constancy and speed of changes in the marketplace and the world today demand that we continuously adjust and rethink what we do and how we do it.  But most people only give lip service to the “cliche’” of constant improvement.  We all say we do it, but few of us do.  Leadership must actively engage people in the often uncomfortable process of letting go of what has worked up to this point, in order that we might discover what will work next.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Absolutely.  In working with my own business students, I say that embracing change is a prerequisite… not putting up with it… embracing it.  So, what do you think is the return on investment in facing that challenge?

JOE CALLOWAY

Optimum performance and the realization of potential.

BARRY LEWIS GREEN

Drop.  The. Mic.  I love it.  Joe, I admire the integrity, clarity and confidence of your work.  I have since I first encountered you and it.  The answers you have provided today have reinforced for me both what I love about the work you are doing and the need for it in the world today and going forward.  I want to sincerely thank you for your time.

JOE CALLOWAY

Always, a pleasure Barry.

To add some history, here is the very first “issue” posted back on May 30, 2016, introducing the Chamber itself and its services.  We still recommend it as a good read for members and those interested in membership alike.  As well, here you will find the Chamber Minutes for August 2016, in case you are catching up.  Catching up is always better than not catching up.  🙂

As you may have already noticed in the Chamber newsletter, things are happening in our business community… and we invite you to check out what is going on.  September 8th is the Chamber Golf 118-chamber_golf_tournament_is_backTournament and The Chamber is gearing up for a busy Fall, building community.  Stay tuned.  We are.

SERVICE in these TIMES

2 Fundamental Ways to Serve

That being said, this month, we thought to dig a little deeper on service and its relationship to the times in which we find ourselves.  There are a multitude of great programs around service training.  Indeed, it is a skill… and one we need to consistently and continuously perfect.  Ultimately though, here we suggest it is about foresight and value.  Randy Pennington and Joe Calloway speak to thatRandy addresses the importance of knowing where we are going and says “people run towards value”.  Joe speaks to usefulness and relevance.  Indeed, these are factors foundational to service excellence; see ahead and serve with ultimate value.  Based on this, consider:

  • How can you build an ongoing awareness of what lies ahead?  How can you build in the habit of staying alert for what is coming; working strategically beyond the day-to-day?
  • How can you add real value to the customer experience… that can be delivered simply and consistently?

Still, Service is a Spirit

Still and all, service is a spirit.  It is about caring about who we serve.  It moves beyond a focus on the Strengthoutcomes that we call revenues and centers in on our efforts. Service is the motivation, and our actions are its manifestation.  The results are our revenues and our success.  Our revenues, much like marks on an exam, are indicators of whether we are doing what we need to do.  As a business educator for 20 years, I encourage my students to focus on the effort and the results will come.  Service is a strength that is strategic and sustainable… and sustaining.

With the imminent start of the NFL Season, here are three thoughts from Vince Lombardi which I and we suggest speak to this.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.

Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.

Let the spirit sink in.

Some Other Questions to Ask

Within these times of change and challenge, trial and triumph alike… here are some questions fundamental to advancing service excellence and the success that comes from same.

  • What do we best do?
  • For whom do we best do it?
  • How can we consistently best do it?
  • How can we ever advance in our ability to respond in doing it?
  • How can we do so in a way that advances return on investment?

Answer these questions for you and your team.  Explore the power of simplicity and focus.  Simple ain’t stupid.  It is brilliant in advancing excellence of focus and service.

The Bottom Line

Service is strength…. and strategic advantage.  With that in mind, here might be three other reads of value as you move forward.

The Mount Pearl Paradise Chamber of Commerce is our chamber, and the Board is committed to ever better serving its members.  Service is excellence in the making, and more needed than ever as we forge forward as a business community.

Until next month…

The Study of Character Leadership Epilogue (Sort Of)

Last week, we shared Part 4 of The Study of Character Leadership.  Here is Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 home-page-callstoaction-epic-engagepreceding that post. They were all grounded in an article published by The Ivey Business School on Developing Leadership Character.  At the heart of this work and exploration has been the virtue of trustworthiness and its vital importance for leadership.

Now, there is this piece on optimizing team productivity.  In it, there is reference to the following team productivity “hacks”.

Team Productivity Hacks For Managers

Organize team building activities

  • Take a little time outside of work and organize some team building activities.
  • By encouraging social interactions between team members, strong collaborative relationships are built and team members are happier.

Create inclusiveness in discussions

  • In order to have an effective and productive team, all members need to feel comfortable in sharing their thoughts.
  • Taking turns to speak and giving everyone a similar amount of time to share creates more inclusiveness in the workplace.

Facilitate Peer Recognition

  • Don’t underestimate the power of peer recognition in the workplace. Team members have a great understanding of great work that deserves recognition around them.
  • Leverage a culture of peer recognition where employees are able to frequently recognize one another for their efforts.

We recommend the entire read; though we do squirm the idea of “hacks”.  But, we get it.  Still and even more so, we suggest these and many other suggestions and activities center around the building of authentic trustworthiness that goes beyond words.

At a recent entrepreneurial event, I heard a number of comments and ideas that (let’s just say) went in another direction.  The ideas proffered were in line with “what they don’t know won’t hurt ’em”.  The thing is they will know, in time.  You might gain temporary advantage but you will not sustain productivity nor success.  Any quick fix manipulation will be seen.  Integrity and trustworthiness, whether in pricing or service or leadership, is vital to long term growth and success.  It must be a treasured commodity.

Dwight Eisenhower spoke of the value of integrity.

The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.

These words speak to integrity and its power to build trust and be worthy of it.  It is an investment true leadership must make.  Anything else is built on the shifting of sand.  Build a house of trust that will stand.  Build the kind of integrity that earns and keeps trust.  The world does not need another quick change artist.  What it needs are builders, of trust.

That is it for our study, for now.  May you “Let deeds, not words, be your adorning”.

Peace, passion and prosperity.
